I thought you died. Of course I tried to burn the place to the ground. You left. You left us. And when I saw you again I thought you were a ghost. You can see how troubling that was, can’t you?

So, yes, I guess I went a little insane. But thankfully you came back. Please don’t do that again.

— George, Holly, and maybe even Kipps (when they saw Lockwood and Lucy go to the other side)

What I think they could do in the tv series if they ever decide to un-cancel it (the scene is George going back to Portland Row after getting the book they were looking for in The Empty Grave. I replaced the part where the driver finds him.)—>

He’s walking home. It’s dark and ominous. Does he know he’s being followed? Maybe. Probably. It focuses on George then pans to the men following him. The one in the lead having a gleaming golden blade. They begin to approach with more of a purpose and catch up with him. George is surrounded. He doesn’t have a chance to put up much of a fight.

The fight itself you don’t see much of. Just a solid punch to the face. And a few bone-crunching kicks to his already crumpled body.

The noise is slightly muffled and the vision is going black. You hear hurried receding footsteps and a vague hope for a siren you’re not 100% sure is there.

Cut scene. The next time you see George he looks pale. Ghostly. Corpse-like. He looks dead. The hurried footsteps are back. This time coming towards him rather than running away. The sound is still muffled, but someone calls out. They sound worried. Fearful.

“George! GEORGE!” It’s Holly. The vision and sound become clear again as Holly kneels beside her hopefully not-dead friend. She’s a mess. “George. Oh, God. George. Please be okay. Please be okay. George. Please. Answer me!” Her sobs make her harder to understand. “HELP! SOMEBODY! PLEASE! HELP!”

Her cries for help turn into just plain crying. Sobbing. Her hands shake as she fumbles to check his pulse. She’s unsure if she can’t find it because she’s nervous or because he’s dead. She’s barely aware of being pushed aside when the EMT arrives. They move him onto a stretcher and load him into the back of an ambulance. She tries to follow. Someone stops her. She fights them, but she doesn’t have the strength. “Please! Let me go. Let me go with him! He’s my friend! He’s my friend!” How many times can she repeat herself? Why don’t they get it? But they’re already driving away.

Holly would have collapsed back onto the street, but someone’s holding her up.

“Holly.” The voice was familiar. “Holly. Let me take you home. You need to tell the others. They need to know. Please.”

The cold rain started to bring her back to her senses. That and the voice. Who she now knew was Kipps. How long had it been raining? When did Kipps get here?

It must have been raining when she left Portland Row. She vaguely remembers that now.

Holly looks up at Kipps. She recognizes him. Of course she does. But her mind is struggling to be present. It’s still somewhere with George on the ambulance ride.

He says her name again. This helps. She nods and allows herself to be lead back to 35 Portland Row.

”You won’t stick around too long, sweetheart. Not when you find out what he’s really like.”

— Quill Kipps

Lucy: proceeds to not stick around because she did in fact find out what he’s really like (reckless with a death wish bound to get himself killed, especially if it means protecting her).

I kind of love the idea of the whole team being involved in Aickmere argument. I’m curious as to how that would go down.

Thinking about what a season 2 of the show would/could look like, I tend to assume there would be a little less antagonism with the Lucy/Holly relationship - similar to what they did with George in season 1. Mostly because I think the show makes Lucy a little less of a “Not Like Other Girls” girl (understandable, that’s generally a phase that young girls grow out of, and show!Lucy is older) but also because the Lucy/Holly rivalry was always *really* about Lucy’s relationship with Lockwood anyway, and I can see the show making that more explicit. But then I wonder if the poltergeist at Aickmere’s would still be a result of that Holly/Lucy fight, or maybe they’d bring Lockwood into it, or even the whole team. I’m a big fan of the trio fight in episode 4, so I’d be more than happy to see them play up the rifts between all of them near the end of that storyline. Would make Lucy’s leaving even more heartbreaking imo.

The closest I ever got to seeing you since you left was the cold bitter hallway that led to your apartment door. I shouldn’t have stopped so soon. But I did. I should have knocked. But I didn’t.

— Holly, talking about her regrets about Lucy leaving.

no but really I can't stop thinking about it. Holly losing her entire team. Lucy losing hers. Flo being apprenticed by people probably only a bit older than her and losing them as well. the three-way venn diagram of Holly/Lucy/Flo where you have Lucy and Holly falling through windows and Holly and Flo stranded alone beside their dead friends throughout the night and all three of them as sole survivors of their teams. the way this is almost a normal thing in this world. these three girls who are so, so different but so, so the same because they're wounded in the same ways and just reacted to it differently. Flo broke completely and had to build herself back up from the rubble. Holly turned to taking support roles, lacking in the connections she used to have. Lucy got angrier and more reckless and isolated herself so she wouldn't be the cause of more people dying. all three of them are alone-ish when we meet them and all three of them are in different stages of their character arcs with their survivor identifies as the inciting cause of those arcs. and by the end they're not alone anymore. and they're not afraid of the connection any longer, to each other, or to others.

I have a bunch of shitpost content in my notes app. Feel free to tag your favorite or the one you feel like is the most you. These were the ones I thought best fit the Lockwood and Co. characters:

How do people just say things? Have you not thought of the consequences?

— Holly Munro

Angry enough to fight god, but too tired to do it.

— George Cubbins/Karim

It’s not stealing if you don’t live by their rules.

— Lockwood

If you see me with an untucked shirt and un-cuffed jeans, don’t worry, I’m still bi.

— Lucy

I want to be cared for gently. What a fun, wholesome, devastating thought.

— Lockwood

I’m not going to read it correctly. I’m going to read it the way dyslexia intended.

— Lockwood

A shirt that says “Am I still performing?”

— Lucy, cause she could use a reminder to stop masking

Lucy about to get Lockwood to eat his words: *insert a picture of alphabet soup*

Ass is gender neutral.

— Quill Kipps

If being “manly” is just being “tough” and being trans is tough as hell, that means I’m super Manly™️.

— Quill Kipps

The only king I worship is Elvis.

— Lockwood

I hate how good it feels to have people like you.

—Skull

When I beat this depression it’s all over for you bitches.

— Everyone

How the fuck?

— George Cubbins/Karim

How do people get up in the morning, and like, do stuff… weird.

— Lockwood

I just want to watch wholesome gay videos and study science.

— Holly Munro

Who cares about character development? I want to be comfortable.

— Quill Kipps

Being alive feels like the ocean. I will not elaborate.

— Holly Munro

Why the fuck?

— Barnes, anytime the Iron Trio does anything

Bonus (Avatar edition):

Your honor, I—

*Zuko starts crying*

Holly: It’s a good thing you’re still strong as an ox… and as stubborn as a mule; you could’ve had one whale of a stroke.

Lockwood: I’ve been called a lot of animals in my time, but never all at once.

ugh. Every character in Lockwood & Co. are the biggest losers you’ve ever seen. They’re the coolest guys around. They hate each others guts. They love each other more than the world. They’re polar opposites. They’re the exact same. They’re literally unhinged. They’re the only sane ones for miles. They’re entirely incompetent. They’re the best ones at their job. They clash on the regular. They complete each other.

EDITED. I’ve read the comments and reblogs and re-evaluated the manner in which I wrote parts of this post. Apologies to anyone who was offended; was not my intention in the least. I have edited the post below, and stand by the newly worded version.

What I don’t ever understand, is why authors in fanfiction completely disregard the actual character when writing about the character. For example, Lucy Carlyle from Lockwood and Co. I’ve read COUNTLESS fics that portray her as “tiny,” “light,” “skinny.” Stroud makes it a point to show that she’s not skinny as a stick. She’s curvier and heavier. Why to you have to wave your generic wand of cliche over her? Stop it.

Lucy’s body type is very rarely depicted in book, tv shows, movies, ect., at least from what I have read. In fanfictions, even less so. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve read mention of a heavier girl in a fic. I feel that it removes a key piece of the character’s... characterization. Furthermore, J. Stroud essentially made a whole CROWD of people (including myself, a midsized person, who is heavier around the hips and thighs like Lucy) very happy and appreciated.

I have absolutely nothing against thinner and lighter people. All I’m saying is that the representation they have is more than plenty. And the physical description of a character, especially when the character differs from the norm that is usually portrayed in media and entertainment, takes away so much from the character and the readers.

Also, all those nightmare fanfics. Not the ones reflective of the scene in the books. And not the ones that are elegantly crafted to reflect something that Stroud’s characters might actually experience. I’m referring to those that are most often found on the underwritten, under-edited, and under-thought side of Wattpad. The side of Wattpad that has 34 fanfics describing the same scene in different words.

Of course, I do acknowledge that characters are interpreted by different people in different ways. However, certain aspects of the character shouldn’t be pulled away. For example, Lucy’s hesitance to share. The entire constant enigma surrounding Lockwood. George’s adorable love of the “why?” of it all and the science (and how he knows both Lucy and Lockwood better than they know themselves).

I personally can’t see Lucy or Lockwood crying to each other in the middle of the night about a bad dream (which in most fics that I’ve ended up reading, is a dream about one losing the other; perhaps I need to dig deeper, but that is all I’ve found on that trope). Discussing? Sure. Sitting together? Sure. Once their relationship progresses, being more vulnerable? Absolutely. But I can never imagine them the way that these pieces do.

To each their own.

Lucy: *exists*

Lockwood: She could stab me and I’d probably say thank you.

George: *completely done with him* What if I stab you?

Kipps: What if no one stabbed anyone?

Holly: *removes knives from the nearby vicinity*

Skull: I’ll stab him!
