When i say I relate to Patrick Bateman, I don’t mean that i’m a misogynist with a superiority complex— I mean that the other week I was CD shopping (yes there are still places that sell CDs) and they didn’t sell any Huey Lewis & The News or Genesis albums and I felt so mad I wanted to throw up and was borderline frothing at the mouth . Because of mental illness
One time (last month, to be truthful) I couldn’t sleep, so I was in bed listening to music (yay!) and the playlist i was listening to has a lot of Huey Lewis & The News songs on it. I was starting to feel woozy, swimming in and out consciousness almost and I was bewildered that the upbeat, energetic 80s sound of Huey and the boys would have such a profound soporific effect and had what seemed to be a genius idea - i’ll just listen to them whenever I can’t sleep! Then I got 2/3rds into a Whitney Houston song which for whatever reason triggered the memory… that I’d actually taken a decent dose of melatonin earlier.
I made a playlist of every single song mentioned and/or referenced in American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.
My hyper-fixation WON and so I went through the book page-by-page, writing em all down. I was frantically googling lyrics. I almost fell out of bed at least twice because I kept realising I’d missed one. This fucking playlist has completely changed the landscape of my Spotify recommendations. It thinks I’m a 50 year old man now and to be honest I’m not complaining.
Knowing all of these adds to the reading experience imo. Now go forth! Enjoy! Become literally him through the power of music! Booyah xx
