Mythbusters is a crash course in “You can do it.”

I grew up watching Mythbusters

(the picture is from here)

I learned from the five of them that it was okay to be obsessed about something or to nerd out about a passion. It taught me that, in order to create, all I had to do was get started.

Before I go further, I would like to say that Mythbusters wasn’t only a fantastic show that I watched, but I basically grew up on it. I watched its first several seasons over and over again with my family with a Professional Engineer and science-obsessed elder sibling. The show was a gateway for me and I have many nostalgic episodes.

Now, getting started isn’t exactly easy. It’s a nightmarish herculean task that many people find to be the most daunting part of a project. Having multiple mental disorders doesn’t help, either (I can attest). So, it’s important to me that this group of people was able to make everything from a rocket car to a recreation of a zombie apocalypse.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman weren’t a perfect pairing but were able to work together regardless. They put their differences aside and became known, not necessarily for their friendship, but for their ability to collaborate.

Kari Byron is nowhere close to how women on science shows are portrayed. Especially for the time, she isn’t another person thrown in for diversity, instead, she is there because she’s great at what she does.

Tori Belleci goofed off, made everyone laugh, and also was integral to the final product. My first time seeing him on the show was amazing because he shattered that idea of either being funny or intelligent.

I am partial to Grant Imahara because he was the first representation of an Asian person in scientific TV shows I had seen. As someone who is Wasian (half white, half Asian - Chinese in my case), it was world changing to see someone remotely similar to my family on TV, in media, no less. Granted (get it?), I didn’t traverse cable for representation when I was eight, but I definitely noticed when it wasn’t there. Grant’s overall demeanor of “I’m not going to take over the world with robots... yet” was the final piece that still makes him my favorite Mythbuster.

However, I have met Adam Savage before, even if brief. I went to the showing of Brain Candy (Adam and Michael from VSauce’s show about science) and my question was picked up for them to answer. I was so excited - I could finally talk to the man who I had been looking up to for years and years. I was actually quite honored when he answered because my question was so oddly specific that he thought I was a full-fledged actually educated adult (not his words, just mine). It was fantastic and made me feel like I could conquer the world,

I only post this now because Adam’s book, Every Tool’s a Hammer, reminded me how this show shaped my outlook. It introduced the scientific method to me at a young age and now, as I sit here, drinking cold tea, at around 10:40PM EST, I just wanted to thank this show from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you, Mythbusters.

tl;dr Mythbusters provides representation that I didn’t see as a half-Chinese kid on the East Coast and it broke stereotypes in Science media. Therefore, due to both nostalgia and the sheer fantastic-ness of this show, I recently realized how it shaped me as a person. So, thanks.
