His eyes are hard as he looks out at the ship. “You sure you don’t want company?”

“I’m sure.” She’s told him several times now, but she supposes he needs to hear it just one more time. 

“It can get lonely out at sea.”

“How would you know?”

“I rowed from Dragonstone to King’s Landing.”

“Not quite the same thing as sailing into the Sunset Sea, is it?” she asks dryly. At the look his face, she adds in a gentler tone, “You deserve a wife who will be just that--a wife. That was never me.”

His eyes are still hard, but he nods. “Can I have one last kiss, at least?”

She rises up on her toes, brushing her lips against his. He holds her in place, deepening the kiss, but she pulls back with a sad smile. “Goodbye, Gendry.”

He leaves without a word.

She supposes it’s better that way.
