chocolate-coated hearts | r.l. (part 3)

part 1 | part 2 | part 3
barista!remus x shy!reader
You smoothen the ruffles on your dress, twirling this way and that. One last glance at the mirror was spent convincing yourself you looked fine before you finally stepped out of your apartment.
The wind blew your hair back as you walked, the click-clack of your boots on the pavement mirroring the thumping of your heart. It was loud and fast, so much so that you wouldnât be surprised if there was a bomb waiting to explode in you.
The barista, Remus â possibly the loveliest human being on earth, had invited you to a poetry reading at Beanieâs. He scribbled down his number onto your coffee cup too, which had to have meant something.
The nerves were starting to get the better of you, your heart climbing its way up your throat as you neared the cafĂ©.Â
This was the first time you so desperately wished that you hadnât majored in literature, that you didnât feel the impact of words as deeply as you did. A poetry reading would definitely trigger the part of you which didnât shut up once uncorked, and you were praying you didnât mess this whole thing up with your tendency to ramble.
Beanieâs was always crowded, but as you pushed the door open, the largeness of the mob was startlingly obvious. You couldnât help but think it looked more like a fish market than a cafĂ©, feeling skin against skin as you pushed past people.
There was a small stage set up at the corner, fairy lights strung above it. At the moment, there was a teenage girl timidly reciting something from a scrunched up piece of paper. You paid her no heed, craning your neck to find Remus.
Just then, an arm wrapped around your waist and you yelp, head swivelling to come face to face with Madison. âHi, gorgeous.â
You sigh, feeling the tension leave your shoulders as she gives you a peck on the cheek. Of course, she came. Your best friend wouldnât shut up for hours after you told her Remus had given you his number. âHey.â
âWhere is he?â she asks immediately, trying to follow your line of vision.
You shrug, eyes darting around till you spot someoneâs gaze trained on you from across the cafĂ©. Itâs not Remus, by any means. But heâs undeniably attractive, long black curls and tattoos all over. Once you finally meet his eyes, he grins and wriggles his eyebrows. Who the fuck â
Just then, Remus sticks his head out from behind the stranger and beams at you, giving you a wave. You immediately shift your gaze to him, your heart feeling like it canât decide whether it wants to be in your throat or chest.
A small smile makes its way onto your face as you wave back, trying to shove your way over to him with Madison on your heels.Â
âAnd now, weâve got Remus Lupin, with The Bell Jar by Sylvia⊠um⊠Plait? Plaque! Sylvia Plaque!â a waiter suddenly squeaks into the microphone before scurrying off stage. You pause in your movements, Remus giving you an almost apologetic smile before he climbs up.
âHello,â he tests the microphone, his lips curving upwards as some members in the crowd cheer. You notice that the black-haired man from earlier seemed particularly enthusiastic, yelling âGo, Moony!â and sticking his fingers in his mouth to whistle.
You train your vision back on Remus as he starts to speak. âSo, this isnât exactly a poem,â he starts. âItâs an excerpt from one of my favourite books. And it really resonated with me, so Iâd like to share it with you.â
You listen silently, anticipating whatever he was going to say next. It was alarming how much this mattered to you, that he had good choices in stories and poems and words. Because how were you to fall in love with a man who didnât feel lingo as deafeningly as he felt the beat of his heart? He wouldnât be able to understand you; you were sure, if he couldnât listen to the silent pleas of scribbles on pages. You conversed like a book, like you were begging to be understood and silently guarded in the heart of oneâs brain â and you only hoped that there was someone out there willing to peruse scripture after scripture till he memorised the language of your lips. Right now, you were really wishing that someone was the gorgeous man in front of you.
âI saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the storyâŠâ
Your eyes flutter shut as you lose yourself in his soliloquy. You donât just hear his speech, but you listen. You listen to the ache that seeps into his voice, the silent rasp of air leaving his lips as he stresses on words he deems important, the sheer longing etched in every word. And you couldnât see it, but you could feel his gaze on you, you could feel the string connecting his heart straight to yours.
â...they plopped to the ground beneath my feet,â he finishes. A slow, somewhat hesitant round of applause sounds in the cafĂ©.
You open your eyes, unsurprised to find them misty. You bring your fingers to your cheeks and swipe the tears away. Madison was gripping one of your hands, squeezing it. The both of you were used to this, your onslaught of tears whenever you felt a little too hard.Â
You watch as Remus steps off the stage, disappearing into the sea of people. Someone else climbs up, and you zone out, getting lost in your thoughts once more.
âHey.â You blink, looking up to see Remus in front of you now, his pretty face scrunched up a bit in worry. âHey, Y/n. You okay? Saw you getting a little emotional just now.â
Madison makes a small squeal of excitement, and Remus flashes her a small smile before turning back to you, patiently waiting for you to respond.
A teary chuckle bubbles out of you, âSorry, yeah, Iâm all good. Itâs just â that was really something. It hurt in the best way. You have great taste, you know.â
He softens at your confession, a smile playing on the edges of his lips. âThank you. And I get it, I couldnât stop crying for almost an hour when I first read it.â
You let out a real laugh at the thought of that, and his smile breaks into a grin. He reaches forward, and you barely have a moment to comprehend it before heâs wiping away the tears on your cheeks. You really hope he canât feel the heat emanating from your skin, or hear the giggles from beside you.
You make it a point to shoot Madison a dirty look as he pulls his hand away. âOn another note,â he starts, and you can hear his slight cockiness at having you all flustered, âI didnât think youâd come.â
âOf course ââ you meant to say that youâd cleared your schedule to be able to make it, but the words die on your tongue as he whips a rose stalk out from behind his back and holds it out for you.
You stare up at him blankly, feeling your heartbeat growing more erratic by the second. âA small thank you for attending.â
âYou give it to all the customers, then?â
âNo. Just the prettiest one.â
You press a hand to your mouth to stop yourself from gasping, and shakily reach out to take the flower from him. Twisting it in your fingers, you feel your heart start to turn to mush â he had cut off all the thorns on the stalk.
âThank you.â
He grins, and itâs more endearing than the rose between your fingers. A sideway glance at your best friend tells you sheâs at the edge of combusting into giggles and swoons.
âHello, lovely ladies.â
Your gaze shifts to the right of Remus to see that man, the good-looking one who had been staring at you from afar. You arch an eyebrow, but Madison matches his energy. âHey, handsome.â
His eyes linger on you. âYouâre Y/n, I assume. Moony â Remus has told me all about you.â Your heart does a backflip and you glance at Remus, only to find him already smiling at you.
âBut you,â he turns to your best friend, his thoughtful expression morphing into a grin. âWho might you be?â
âMadison.â
âMadison,â he drawls. âSirius.â
You watch as Sirius compliments her dress, and she turns a red so deep it could rival how you had been minutes ago. And you smile, because you knew sheâd been belittling herself over her appearance with the baby bump.
Remus silently tugs on your hand, steering you away from them. He glances over at the two of them again, grinning. âSorry about Sirius. The asshole can be such a flirt.â
You huff out a laugh. âNo, itâs quite alright. Madisonâs quite the lovergirl herself, and god knows she needs this after her previous relationship.â
He nods understandingly, and a silence settles over the two of you. âIâm glad you came. You know, studying literature and stuff, I thought youâd like it.â
âIâm glad I came too. But Iâm sorry you had to see me like ââ you chuckle nervously, doing a jazz hands in front of your face, âlike this, tears and all.â
His curls bounce as he laughs, eyes crinkling at the corners. You couldnât help but think that all the creative evocations youâve ever read fell short in describing the depth of his eyes. âThatâs nothing to apologise for, sweet girl. You look just as lovely even when youâre crying.â
You pull your lip between your teeth to stop the smile from spreading across your face.
âBabe ââ Madison comes over, out of breath. âCan we leave? I still havenât gotten the groceries for tonight. And youâre helping me with dinner.â
You glance over her shoulder to see Sirius watching her with hearts in his eyes, and you let out a soft snicker when you see tints of Madisonâs maroon lipstick on his cheek. âOkay.â
Madison pulls you towards the exit. You cast a glance at Remus, smiling and waving.
âY/n!â Remus calls out, and you tug on Madisonâs fingers to get her to stop.
âYeah?â
âHow else would you like me to see you?â
You blink. âHuh?â
He chuckles. âYou said you didnât want me to see you like this, in tears. How else â where else can I see you, sweetness?â
Your heart jolts at his obvious attempts at flirting, and how easily it was working.
âTammyâs Bookstore,â you almost mumble, shyness flooding into your voice. â8pm to 12am shift.â
Remus seems to have gotten the answer he wanted. âCool. Iâll see you there sometime.â
You turn around before he can see how pink youâve turned, urging Madison out the shop.
âAnd sweetheart? Use the phone number.â

in another life | j.p.

âCalm down, babe,â Sirius mutters as you walk in step, looping his arm through yours.
You nibble on your bottom lip anxiously, sighing as you glance over at him. âItâs not that easy, Siri. Iâm seeing him after what â four years? I canât just calm down!â
He rolls his eyes, reaching towards you and thumbing at your lip to save it from your torment. âYouâre seeing me after four years.â
You turn to Sirius, and he huffs out a laugh at your deadpan expression. âWell, you never asked me to marry you.â
Sirius wiggles his eyebrows, his lips curving up into a grin. âMarry me?â
âFuck off, Black.â
James and Lily Potter were holding a meet-up of sorts, and had invited most people in your year at Hogwarts. You were hesitant to go, given your history with James, but Sirius insisted you tag along. You knew he, Remus, and Peter had stayed in touch with James. Rightfully, you ought to have too. But neither of you tried to; maybe you both knew it was better that way.
Sirius simpers, coming to a halt in front of the large black gates of the mansion. He reaches forward and begins to twist the lock, and you instinctively reach over and grab his hand to stop him. He turns to you, confusion twisting his features. âWhat are you â oh. Oh, sweetheart.â
He softens when he sees the expression on your face. Youâre biting your cuticles, and the anxiety in your features is palpable. Sirius sighs and firmly pulls your hand away from your mouth, intertwining your fingers together. âItâs gonna be okay. Just be cordial with him. Thereâs no bad blood, right?â
âRight,â you mutter, albeit uncertainly.
âBut, umâŠâ he sighs, dropping your hand to rake his fingers through his hair. âThereâs something I shouldâve told you before. But I didnât wanna freak you out.â
âWhat?â
The apprehension in your tone causes Sirius to wince. âJames and Lily, they⊠theyâve got a baby.â
Thereâs a beat of loud silence as the fact sinks in, a mount of uncertainty and hurt settling in the pit of your stomach.
âOh.â
Youâre trying not to show it, but the heartbreak on your face is painfully obvious. Sirius pouts, moving to take your hand again. âBabe, Iâm sorry. I shouldâve ââ
He doesnât get the chance to finish his sentence, the gates swinging open to reveal a beaming James Potter.
âPads,â he grins immediately, eyes locking on Sirius as he moves towards him and swoops him into a quick hug.
You take the moment to look James over. He looked exactly like you remembered â messy curls, toned biceps, that movie-star grin. Yet something felt different, in the way he pulled Sirius into a hug without all the raucous fervour he wouldâve at 16, how he held him so gently at armâs length while talking to him. Heâd softened, you realised, from the responsibilities of fatherhood and being a husband.
They pull apart a moment later, and his gaze drifts to you. His smile loses a bit of its sunshine, not softening but not quite dimming either. âY/n, hey.â
Thereâs a moment of hesitation as he looks at you, but then he seems to decide upon giving you a hug too.
âHi,â you mutter as he shortens the distance between you, needling his arms under yours to press them to your back. You embrace him in return, and a sudden pang of hurt shoots through your heart at the familiarity of the action.
Perhaps he was remembering it too, from the way he tightened his grip. Both of you were heavy on physical touch, and it was undeniably the best part of your relationship back in Hogwarts â how heâd always have a hand wrapped around your waist, how youâd wake up to cuddles and hugs every morning. You didnât exactly have anyone to hug anymore, living alone.
So you convince yourself that the reason you hold on to James for slightly longer than necessary was because you craved human touch, not because of⊠anything else.
Finally, James pulls away, his arms dropping to his sides as he gives you a small smile. You plaster one onto your face too, for his sake. âSo,â he starts as he turns around, beginning to lead you and Sirius into the mansion, âhowâve you been, Y/n?â
You can feel Siriusâ gaze burning holes into the side of your head, but choose to ignore him. âIâve been great, yeah. You?â
James nods. âThatâs cool. Yeah, Iâve been good too. Things have been fun, but kind of busy; you know, with work and Lily and the babyâŠâ He seems to realise what heâs said, and clears his throat awkwardly. Oh, of course. The baby.
Sirius is beside you in an instant, arching his eyebrows and nudging your elbow to respond.
âOh, um⊠congrats on the baby, by the way.â
James turns around to face you as you walk, and you give him a grin to prove that youâre being genuine â to show him that it didnât feel like there was a knife being twisted in your gut every time the word baby was brought up.
His eyes soften, and you know he can tell how youâre feeling. But he gives you a grateful smile, and says no more as the three of you come to a stop in front of the house.
âBy the way,â James mutters as he pushes the door open, âyou guys are like, an hour early. Youâre the only ones here.â
You immediately turn around to glower at Sirius for subjecting you to more torture than necessary by bringing you early. But he all but smirks as he follows you in.
Your eyes coast around the mansion, taking it all in. Itâs decorated in a minimalist aesthetic, white couches and brown rugs. It was pretty, that was for sure; but you couldnât help but think how different it was from Jamesâ place in the dorm â posters and stickers all over the walls, boisterously red curtains and LED lights. It used to be so full of life.
Honestly, you mightâve guessed an old couple lived here, if not for the small signs of their life as a family â the pacifier on the dining table, a cradle at the far end of the living room, and the heart-shaped photo frames lining the walls.
James watches you, a small smile playing on the edges of his lips. âYou like it?â
He knows you wouldnât like it, itâs everything you arenât. Your dorm had been just like his; trying to fit as many vinyls and posters onto that small space next to your bed as possible. There would be fairy lights in every corner and succulents on the nightstand, a dreamcatcher which heâd gifted you hanging right above your bed. You were messy, as a person, and with your love too. You thought he was messy as well; but apparently heâd gotten his shit together already.
âYeah, itâs simple. Pretty.â
âHoney ââ Lily bustles out the kitchen, a small gasp escaping her lips as she sees you and Sirius. Sheâs holding a ladle in one hand, and has her other arm wrapped around a baby perched on her waist.
You donât register it when she kisses your cheek and hugs you, asks you how youâre doing and leads you to sit on the couch. Your gaze is locked on the baby, every second spent staring at him worsening the nauseous feeling at the back of your throat.
You mustâve asked for his name, because the word, âHarry,â registers in your head. This beautiful baby, with Lilyâs deep green eyes and Jamesâ luscious curls, was Harry.
Would you have named your baby Harry? Probably not, it was too generic. But it was too late now, to pick out names and choose a less boring aesthetic for a house together.
You had lost your chance back in seventh year, that night when you were laying on Jamesâ bed, limbs tangled together as he raked his hands through your hair with all the love in the world. Youâre gonna be my husband one day, youâd whispered, feeling so much affection for him you thought your heart would burst. Yeah, baby, heâd replied with a soft smile. Weâre gonna live in a mansion, with our dogs and children and â
Children?
I donât⊠I donât want children. And thatâs where it all started going downhill, thatâs the moment Jamesâ smile turned upside down and his hand dropped from your hair. It had turned into an argument, a screaming match â and eventually a reason to break up. James couldn't understand much you feared it, the pain of pregnancy and the exhaustion that came with motherhood. And some part of you knew that you werenât blameless either â calling him awful things and accusing him of not loving you; though love was all he ever gave till the day you told him it was over.
The feeling of Siriusâ nails digging into your palm brings you back to the present, and you see him nodding absentmindedly as Lily rambles about how much trouble Harryâs been, and oh, sheâs picked up a hobby of crocheting, andâŠ
You flit your eyes to look at James sitting opposite you, gazing at you with his brows pinched in concern. Your emotions mustâve been obvious on your face, then. But he immediately looks away when Lily calls out to him, holding up Harry for him to carry.
You watch silently as James squeezes into the chair next to his wife, taking the small, lovely baby between his large, calloused hands. He smiles at Harry, looking at him though he was the most precious thing on earth. Jamesâ fingers bunch Harryâs tiny shirt as he brings him close to his face, gently pressing a kiss to his forehead. Lilyâs head lolls onto Jamesâ shoulder as he shifts Harry into a comfortable lying position in his arms.
There you have it. The perfect family, with the gorgeous wife and the adorable baby and the man who couldâve been yours if you wanted.
Itâs too much for you to take, and Sirius squeezes your hand as you start to shake. Harry coos, and you melt at how Jamesâ face breaks into a sunny beam. He tilts his head to press a soft peck to his wifeâs hair, and thereâs so much love in that simple gesture that you feel like you could die.
You feel Siriusâ worried gaze on you, your hands trembling and your knee bobbing up and down. The taste of blood from how hard youâre nibbling on your lip is grounding; it brings you back to yourself, who you are, and not who you couldâve been.
âHey,â he murmurs softly from beside you, but it doesnât get lodged into your brain. The only thing you feel is your vision of the perfect family blurring, soft streams of regret rolling down your cheek. Sirius makes a small noise of pity from beside you, and James looks up instantly, eyes widening as they lock on you. Lily is fast asleep, baby Harry staring at you with his thumb stuck into his mouth.
âY/n, you okay?â James asks gently, but you donât reply, still looking at him with that distraught look on your face. You open your mouth, but you donât seem to have the vocabulary to express the heartache you felt right that moment. It felt strangely like grief; like you were mourning for the version of yourself you never got to meet, for the version of James who didnât have the chance to be yours.
James' mouth twists downwards in a frown as he stands up and steps closer towards you. Itâs like an alarm is set off in your head, and you immediately jolt back to the present, sucking in a deep breath.
Your legs act of their own accord as you stand up, Siriusâs hand falling limp on the couch as he looks up at you in surprise. You gulp down the lump in your throat and fiercely brush the tears away, James coming to a halt in front of you. âY/n, baby ââ
âIâm not your baby.â
James slaps a hand to his mouth, eyes as wide as Harryâs now. âFuck, no, it â it just came out. I didnât mean to. Shit, youâre crying.â
âIâm okay,â you warble. James opens his mouth to retort but you donât let him, knowing that the longer you spent here, the more the gaping hole in your chest would grow. You couldnât bear it anymore, watching James with his wife and wishing it was you instead. The worst part was that it was all your fault, your stupidity and your rejection.
âIâm fine, really. IâŠIâm gonna go now, it was nice meeting you. Convey my love to Remus, Peter and the girls.â You pick up your bag, moving to the front door with a befuddled James tracking your movements.
âY/n ââ
âBye, James,â you call out halfheartedly as you slip into your shoes. He comes to stand at the door, rocking Harry from side to side. He looks almost disappointed as you make to leave.
âIâm sorry.â
You look up, surprised. âItâs not your fault.â
Jamesâ lips pursed together with guilt, seeming like he wants to say something as he opens and closes his mouth. He finally sighs, âItâs not your fault either.
It was startling, how he still knew just the right thing to say â he always had. The regret that had been clogging up your heart for years was drained out upon hearing that one sentence. James didnât hold the utter failure of your relationship against you, and that was enough. If you couldnât have his love, at least you had his forgiveness.
You give him a half smile and nod, turning around to leave. Youâd go back to yours, more of a house than a home. But at least no one but yourself could hurt you there, there was no one to turn away and no hearts to break. No one to love.
âHey.â
You spin back around to face the door, heart stopping upon seeing the moistness in his eyes. You hear the scratchiness in his throat as he sucks in a deep breath.
âJamesâŠâ
âNo, donât â donât say anything. I just wanted to tell you, umâŠâ he defeatedly runs a hand through his hair and exhales shakily. âI hope we worked out, you know, in another life.â
That catches you off guard, your heart involuntarily squeezing in your chest. James looks almost embarrassed as he says it, but you see the vulnerability in his eyes. He was right â maybe there was some planet on which you were less of a coward, another world where he could put a ring on your finger. Heâd been yours to lose in this life, perhaps he was yours to love in another.
You clear your throat, feeling nausea brimming in the pits of your gut. âYeah, I⊠I hope so too.â
You spare yourself one last glance at him before turning towards the exit, praying he doesnât see the tears dribbling down your cheeks.
You squeeze your eyes shut and will yourself to trudge forward, before he can call out to you and break your heart all over again.
In a few long strides, youâre out the gates; out of Jamesâ life again.

âCalm down, babe,â Sirius mutters as you walk in step, looping his arm through yours.

In a few long strides, youâre out the gates; out of Jamesâ life again.
brooke my baby hereâs a flower to ease your pain haha đđč

âCalm down, babe,â Sirius mutters as you walk in step, looping his arm through yours.
He finally sighs, âItâs not your fault either.

in another life | j.p.

âCalm down, babe,â Sirius mutters as you walk in step, looping his arm through yours.
In a few long strides, youâre out the gates; out of Jamesâ life again.
oh my god your tags đđ âthe beauty your words convey is immeasurableâ thatâs the sweetest thing anyone has ever said excuse me while i go cry in the corner! thank you đ„čđ«¶

a/n: this is the first time iâve ever really cried when writing something, itâs got a home in my heart now and i hope you like it!! 𫶠(also listen to our lovely girl billie for added heartbreak)
tw: past suicide attempt
You lean back on the couch from where youâre bending over the table. Remus wastes no time in wrapping an arm around your waist, pulling you into his side. He gently presses his lips to your forehead. âHappy birthday, lovely girl.â
âThank you,â you mumble half-heartedly, grateful but too overwhelmed to show it.Â
Thereâs a cut-up chocolate cake in front of you, which Remus had insisted upon baking. Heâd honoured your wishes not to throw a big bash, and of not wanting an actual present. He didnât exactly understand why â but he loved you too much to not do what you wanted him to; birthday or not.
Guilt weighs heavily on your heart; Remus has been kinder than you deserve. You decide to help him understand.
âYou know,â you start softly, tilting your head to lay it on his shoulder. He hums in acknowledgement, fingertips grazing your sleeve as he starts to rub your arm. âI didnât think I would last this long.â
The shakiness in your voice surprises even you. You feel Remusâ hand still on your arm.Â
âWhat?â he murmurs. You canât decipher if the slight lilt to his voice is because of sadness or confusion.
âI didnât think I would last this long,â you repeat quietly, just to be safe, and you feel his hand coasting across your back as he gently grabs your shoulders. He turns you towards him, and you donât wait for him to ask before you start to explain. âWhen I was 13, I couldnât imagine ever making it this far. I tried to kill myself.â
Remusâ eyes widen the slightest bit as he regards your sudden admission. His grip on your shoulders doesnât falter; and itâs like you both know heâs the only thing holding you upright.Â
When he doesnât respond, your gaze immediately drops to the couch, shame clouding your eyes.
âI⊠I didnât know that.â
The crack in his voice makes you look back up, meeting his gaze. His features are softer, sadder; somehow. Thereâs the slightest bit of grief in the way heâs regarding you. âAre you glad you made it this far?â
You rub your lips together, taking a shaky breath to make sure your voice comes out evenly. âYeah,â you exhale softly. âYeah, I am. I got to meet you.â
âIs that the only reason?â
âNo,â you reply honestly. âI love my work. My friends, I really like hanging out with them. And Iâd say our apartment is pretty sweet.â
The concern in Remusâ expression is still evident, his brows pinched almost painfully. His hands bunch up the fabric on your shoulders, tugging you towards him. Youâre certain the action is subconscious â he looks lost in thought, like heâs deliberating wrapping you up in his arms and never letting you go.
âWould you like more reasons?â you ask quietly, feeling your vision start to blur. You shouldnât be surprised that he cares this much, but you are.
When he nods, your heart melts â the magma seems to be pooling in your stomach, and you feel the kind of warmth youâve only ever been able to feel since you met him.
âOkay,â you decide to indulge him. âI like coffee when I wake up, especially when you make it. Feeding the stray dogs on the side of the road every morning. And my guitar, I like to make music on it. I think music is nice.â
Your throat starts to clog up, the image of Remus distorting into a blurry swirl in your vision. âItâs lovely when it rains, especially when weâre both at home, cuddling. And ââ
Your voice comes out wobbly. Youâre crying now, hot tears dribbling pathetically off your chin. You want to stop, but you push on for his sake.
âAnd I really like our apartment. Did I mention that? Also, your hugs â I love the way you hug. Itâs like you really love me, and ââ
âI do love you,â Remus interrupts, words barely audible from the way his voice is trembling. âI do love you, okay? I love you a whole lot. And Iâm so glad youâre still with me.â
He doesnât give you a chance to respond, gently pulling you even closer towards him. You meet him in the middle, arms instinctively wrapping around his waist as he brings his hands up to encircle your shoulders.
Remus squeezes you like itâs his job to hold you together, and you hear a soft sniffle as he buries his face in your hair.Â
âIâm so glad youâre still here,â he says again. Your heart clenches in your chest, in all the best ways.
âI love you,â you respond, because you both know itâs synonymous with Thank you for giving me a reason to be here.

kiss and make-up | j.p. đ

a/n: i know i said i was gonna take a break but⊠i just HAD to get this out of my system đ€
summary: fluff!! james helps you do your makeup
Jamesâ hand comes up to cup your cheek and you bristle, giggling as his fingertip tickles your nose.
âBabe, seriously. I canât work if you donât keep still,â he murmurs, bemusement lacing his words as he repositions your face.
You apologize, biting down on your lower lip to stop the smile from spreading across your cheeks. You decide that he deserves some credit for his efforts to doll you up; so you try your best to stay put.
The tip of the eyeliner feels tingly against your skin as James traces it onto your eyelid. You sneak a glance at him, eyebrows furrowed in concentration and tongue jutting out of his rosy lips. Youâd give him a big fat kiss if it wouldnât ruin the make-up heâs been diligently working on for the past hour.
âHowâs it look?â
âShush,â he mutters, tilting his head slightly as he adjusts the wing on your other eye, squinting in an attempt to do some detailing.
Marleneâs band was doing a gig at the biggest pub in town, so you were going down with Lily and Mary to watch her play. The boys were invited too; but were more interested, according to Sirius, in going actual clubbing than listening to some emo rock band.
But your boyfriend had really wanted to spend the night with you, and he claimed that it was not just because you looked really hot in your little dress. So he decided to make it up to you by doing your make-up.
James lets go of your face to lean back and admire his work, and thatâs when you notice a dark smudge on his cheek. This time you canât stop the laughter from bubbling out of you.
âWhat?â he asks, horrified when you start to clutch your stomach. His expression only worsens your giggling, an amused smile slowly creeping its way onto his face.
You shake your head, pressing one hand to your mouth to muffle your laughter as you tug him towards you with the other.
Grabbing a wet wipe from beside you, you gently thumb at the eyeliner on his cheek. âYouâve got it on your face, idiot.â
âOh,â James mumbles, and your grin only widens when his cheeks redden. Itâs your turn to grab his face, trying your best to rub the stubborn smudge away. His glasses slide down his nose unceremoniously, and you suppress a smile as you push them back up.
You feel his eyes on you when you turn him this way and that, nails poking into his cheekbones. Then, slowly, a small smile makes its way onto his cheeks.
A soft sigh escapes his lips and you halt, locking eyes with him bemusedly. âWhat?â
âNothing, you ââ he sighs again. gazing at you with a soppy smile on his face. âYou look gorgeous, you know?â he mutters. âLike, youâre always pretty, but right now youâre extra pretty. I wish I could kiss you.â
Your heart stutters at his slushy mess of words, and you feel the overwhelming urge to leave your lipstick stains on him, every part of him you can reach.
A huff of laughter finds its way out of you, cheeks heating up embarrassingly. âI wanna kiss you too, hon. But this lipstickâs too cute.â
James pouts. âCuter than me?â
âOh, definitely,â you drawl, but you let him press his lips to yours anyway. He leaves the house later on with one black stain and six lip-shaped ones peppered all over his cheeks.

Your heart stutters at his slushy mess of words, and you feel the overwhelming urge to leave your lipstick stains on him, every part of him you can reach.

tw: past suicide attempt
Remusâ eyes widen the slightest bit as he takes in your sudden admission.
The concern in Remusâ expression is still evident, his brows pinched together almost painfully.
You feel your throat start to clog up, the image of Remus distorting into a blurry swirl in your eyes. âItâs lovely when it rains, especially when weâre both at home, cuddling. And ââ
Your voice comes out wobbly, the tears coming hard and fast now. You want to stop, but push on for his sake.
âAnd I really like our apartment. Did I mention that? Also, your hugs â I love the way you hug. Itâs like you really love me, and ââ
âI do love you,â Remus interrupts in a shaky exhale, words barely audible from the way his voice is trembling. âI love you, okay? I love you a whole lot. And Iâm so glad youâre still with me.â
He doesnât give you a chance to respond, gently pulling you even closer towards him. You meet him in the middle, arms instinctively wrapping around his waist as he brings his hands up to encircle your shoulders.
Remus squeezes you like itâs his job to hold you together, and you hear a soft sniffle as he buries his face in your hair.Â
âIâm so glad youâre still here,â he says again. Your heart clenches in your chest, in all the best ways.
âI love you,â you respond, because you both know itâs synonymous with Thank you for giving me a reason to be here.

tw: fluff
remus lupin x reader
Remus quietly padded down into the common room, unsurprised to find you seated at the table with parchments and books scattered around you.
There was a puddle of drool spreading from where your face rested against a book, fast asleep. Remus internally winced; there was no way that was a comfortable position for your neck.
He gently brushes the tips of his fingers against your hairline and you immediately jolt awake, almost knocking his arm in the process.
You raise your hands to rub your eyes with slowed movements, the exhaustion lining your features painfully obvious. You turn to him, befuddled, before realising who it is and softening.
You looked adorable, mussed up hair and wide-eyed. It had Remus thinking about how it would feel to wake up to the sight for the rest of his life. âHow long have you been up for, dove?â
He flattens his palms onto your shoulder blades, needling pressure into the tense muscles with his thumbs. You melt under his touch, your shoulders slumping. âNot very long,â you lie.
âItâs 4am, baby. Youâve been studying all night, havenât you?â
You draw your bottom lip between your teeth, letting out a soft sigh. âYeah⊠I guess. But I have to, thereâs still three more chapters Iâm not done revising. I just need more coffee.â
âThe last thing you need right now,â Remus mutters as he lets go of your shoulders and lowers himself into a chair beside you, âis coffee. You need to get some rest, sweetheart. Youâre not gonna be able to remember anything when youâre this tired.â
He uses his foot to push your chair around till youâre facing him. You reach for him immediately, sleepy movements causing you to lay your arms, bundled up, in his lap. Bemusedly, he takes your hands and starts to rub circles into your wrists.
âBut Iâm not tired,â you argue, though your eyelids look like theyâre physically weighing you down. Youâre blinking so forcefully Remus thinks it would generate enough energy to power a light bulb. âI just took a power nap and Iâm good now.â
âThatâs not enough, dove. Itâs late, and youâre gonna be fucked up tomorrow. You need proper rest.â
âDo I?â
âYou do.â
Your face is lovably scrunched up now, and Remus canât tell if youâre trying to challenge him or if your brain really is that fuzzy.
He moves to gather your materials and you make a small noise of protest, dazedly shaking your head. âI canât rest now, I need to finish studying first.â
You seem hardly able to track his movements, eyelids drooping shut every few seconds. âYou can study tomorrow, sweetheart. Youâve studied enough for tonight.â
You huff, stubbornly staying put in your chair. Remus rises to his feet, tucking the stack of books in one arm before firmly pulling you up with the other. You stay silent, obviously annoyed but too exhausted to fight back.
He wraps his arm around your waist, pulling you into his side as he leads you up the staircase to his dorm. The anxiety in your features is palpable, and he feels bad for worsening it. But he knows you, he knows you would never feel like youâve studied enough. Youâd work yourself to the bone if you had it your way, so it was up to him to make sure you didnât.
âYou look exhausted, baby,â he murmurs as he bends down to press a kiss to your forehead. You visibly soften, your expression morphing into one less rigid. âI am exhausted.â
âI know,â he concedes, pushing you onto the bed until youâre properly laying down. âYouâre gonna do better with rest, trust me. Youâre gonna be okay.â
You hum weakly in response, eyes fluttering shut as soon as your head hits the pillow. Even in your dazed state, your arms extend towards him.
Remus lets out a soft chuckle and climbs into the bed next to you, pulling the covers over the both of you.
You shuffle towards him, seeking his warmth. He wraps an arm around your middle and tugs till youâre snugly pressed up against each other, pecking a kiss to the soft skin beneath your eye. âI meant what I said, alright? Donât worry about the test. Youâre gonna be okay.â
âOkay,â you whisper, and he feels that last bit of uncertainty you had melt away as you deflate. Your words come out muffled as you move impossibly closer, snuggling your face into his chest. âOkay. Gânight.â
âGoodnight, sweetheart.â
stopp youâre gonna have me sobbing now!! thank you so much lily đđ

tw: eating disorder recovery
Regulus knows where to find you, but he also knows better than to act like he was looking for you with two bowls of food in hand.
âHey.â
You almost jump at the sound of his voice. You turn around from where youâre sitting on the porch, giving him a small smile. âHi.â
His heart drops a little when he sees your face, with your sunken eyes and tired expression.
âI didnât realize you were home already. Did you come through the back?â
He hums an affirmative, sitting down next to you on the steps leading out the house.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watches as you slouch onto the railing on your left, blankly staring out at the road. âHowâs your day been?â
Regulus casually twirls his fork into the spaghetti in his bowl before bringing it to his mouth. Maybe he believes heâs being slick, you think, but itâs obvious that heâs got twice his usual serving.
âTodayâs been fine, yeah. Just busy. How was work?â
He nods in response, âGood, actually. Mark finally sent me the files I needed to get that huge contract signed, and ââ He presses his fork into the pasta again, but this time brings it up to your mouth (hoping youâre too distracted to mind).
His heart drops and how instantly you swerve backwards, almost crashing into the step behind you.
âReg,â it comes out as a betrayed hiss. You take a shaky exhale before sitting back upright. âI donât want any; Iâve eaten dinner already.â
âHave you?â
âYes, I ââ
âThen whyâs the kitchen completely clean?â
Regulus never takes a harsh tone with you, and he wasnât going to start now. Thereâs nothing but quiet, genuine concern in the way he asks. Guilt claws at the back of your throat anyway.
It was one of your worse days; thoughts of excessive calories and not having worked out being all you could think about. Youâd stared at yourself in the mirror for what seemed like hours, cursing every flaw of your body and wondering why me.
Without your boyfriend home, it had just felt like there was no reason to fatten yourself.
âHey,â Regulus mutters, laying his palm facing upwards on your lap. You take it. âYouâre getting in your head again.â
âSorry.â
âNothing to be sorry for, lovely girl.â He reaches out to gently brush a stray hair away from your face. âBut do you think you could try to eat something? Please?â
Your heart stops, and itâs like your mind is reeling back into its hiding spot already. No lies on the tip of your tongue.
âIt doesnât have to be a lot, dove, he continues quietly, rubbing your fingers. âJust a few bites. You need fuel, you know.â
Regulus is looking into your eyes with that silent look now, the one which makes you feel like heâd do just about anything to save you from yourself. You donât think you could ever say no to him.
And it wasnât like youâd eaten anything today. You were allowed this, for your boyfriend, right?
âFine.â
He smiles softy and tugs you closer, stamping a kiss to the side of your forehead and picking up the bowl of pasta from beside him. âSo, remember that bouquet I bought you last week?â
He starts to make casual conversation as he feeds you, and you do your best to listen. It goes all the way from those flowers were expensive! to maybe we should get a cat â or a new apartment â but NOT a dog.
The food gets lodged in your throat every now and then, but you force yourself to swallow. The âfullâ feeling starts to creep up on you like your shadow.
Regulus can sense it. âOkay, but why the hell do you like dogs?â
You decide to indulge him and go off on a tangent about the fluffy beasts, which pulls your mind away from its dark corner. The conversation makes the chore of eating easier.
Youâre sure he knows what heâs doing, but youâre going to let him anyway.
Before you know it, youâre laughing so hard you donât even realize the bowl is empty. He stands up to put it away before you get the chance to think too hard about it.
