I've been thinking about this for a while, not just in terms of Eurovision, but it's a good context to explore the idea in.

I'm not sure it there is an actual term for this, but I've come to think of it in terms of genre literacy, where for certain musical genres you need a base of understanding (and experience) to work from, in order to fully understand or appreciate the more complex or derived works within a particular genre.

This doesn't negate those moments when you're introduced to something outside of your normal experience ("What the **** was that?!") and it completely knocks your socks off, but even then, chances are you're going to be inspired to do more exploring around that song/artist/genre, thus providing you with more background and musical context.

This is why I get so excited seeing variation in some of the less well-trodden genres in Eurovision; to me, Viszlát Nyár by AWS (Hungary, 2018), in addition to being one of my favourite Eurovision entries ever (and being one of the few to reliably make me cry), is wildly different from anything we've seen before or since, including the examples you gave from 2021, Zitti e buoni by Måneskin (Italy) or Dark Side by Blind Channel (Finland, of course).

As much as I would like to feel slightly smug about my taste in music, I very much feel this applies to 'pop' music as well; with a few exceptions (Lizzo, Lana Del Ray, Miley Cyrus, and a smattering of Carly Rae Jepson and Cardi B) I've barely listened to anything approaching the mainstream musical canon for a few years, so turning on the radio it all sounds like a bit of a homogeneous blur. That doesn't mean that mainstream pop music is objectively bad, or less complex or worthy than the music I enjoy, more that I don't have the experience and the background knowledge to judge whether it's good or bad in context.

A lot of my musical taste is so niche, I'm also just really happy seeing other people finding music that they enjoy and that means something to them (even if I would love to have more people to talk to about Epic Nautical Funeral Doom Metal ;) )

This gets further complicated when you consider artists and songs who are deliberately pushing (or breaking) the boundaries or tropes of a genre; you need that grounding in order to fully appreciate what they are doing differently!

One of the reasons I love Eurovision so much is because it's one of the few arenas where we get to see a wide variety of genres (and cultural contexts) in one place, and I feel that has been invaluable for me in terms of my overall musical genre literacy.

That said, if we did ever see a doom metal entry in Eurovision (unlikely, and I'm not convinced it would do well), I would absolutely flip my lid! :D

I sometimes get annoyed at how eurofans trend to treat all rock/metal songs the same, putting very different songs into the same box/genre, while for instance Zitti E Buoni and Dark Side were very different songs. Meanwhile, when listen to the pop entries my reaction to pretty much all of them is “it’s pretty catchy, I could listen to it but I would not seek it out”, and I get baffled when half of them are written of as masterpieces and half of them as trash.

(to be clear: this post is meant to be about how people tend to view music they listen to more “complexly” than music they don’t listen to, and how I can be hypocritical, this is not an attempt to claim that I have superior taste in music)

So, I have a few updates.

I'm writing fanfiction for The Eurovision winning group Måneskin (Each of the members) and they are all x male reader.

I'm thinking about posting illustrations for pride month, that relate to my experiences of being queer and living in a somewhat homophobic society (as in the country I live in) and also about the positive things that have happened because of online communities etc.

I also have fanfiction about Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Pedro Pascal, Corpse Husband and Pete Davidson coming up, but they are still gonna take a while, so just keep your eyes open for those.

So that's my little update.

Happy Pride month!!!

Not a classic rock fan in particular, but I do enjoy the genre and just wanted to add my two cents: I enjoyed listening to quite a few of their songs, but then grew tired of them very quickly. I think Maneskin make well produced rock. They have a great singer. They play their instruments well enough. Though nothing extraordinary, they'll probably get better with time. Their lyrics I can't judge since I don't speak Italian, but their themes seem to be decent with a nice message. Their real strong suit is their looks and branding. And that's about it. They are good, not great, at what they are doing, yet what they are doing is nothing special or new. Maybe it's enough to bring back some attention to rock music, but it will not be enough to kickstart any new movements or influence the direction of rock music in a new or subversive way. Things like that come from strong and vibrant underground scenes, wich Maneskin is not a sign of. I'm sorry, but they just aren't that innovative. They don't need to be either, but some people set them on this pedestal and it kinda irks me...

Is it just me or is it true, that everyone who is in the classic rock/ rock fandom gives a shit about Måneskin? Like they are viewed as some form of rock in the media (maybe also as a band who keeps rock alive idk) but no one who actually listens to rock music gives a fuck about them?

Gosh they are so bad :/ they are like the European version of Greta van Fleet (no offense)

By the way, there is an actual reason for the visceral rage you feel at the thought of cishet men perceiving Victoria.

The majority of Måneskin’s fanbase is queer & questioning young women. At live shows, that only becomes truer the closer you get to the barricade (& from the barricade, they pick people to go on stage). Vic herself is a proud queer woman. So when she’s expressing her sexuality on stage, it is for the female gaze.

The way she engages seems special because it is. We never see women being openly sexy & jubilant & authentic because of the patriarchy’s omnipresent coercion. Vic’s sexuality on stage isn’t a performance for men & we can see how much joy she gets from that freedom, especially during the finale. While the boys are simply trying to survive the stage invasion, our girl Vic is beyond thrilled to lay in a pile of other sweaty, nearly topless chicks. With a giant smile on her face she calls some dude a “fucking pig” for thinking she’s hot while everyone else screams that she prefers pussy.

Typically, WLW being sexy for other WLW quite literally involves a middle man packaging (writing, directing, editing) that content (through the male gaze). But there is nothing between Vic & the live audience. What Måneskin’s videographers capture will always be made for the female gaze, no matter how it’s curated. We don’t realize how the patriarchy taints our experiences with other women/fems until something like this captures our focus. Then it’s a struggle to pin down precisely what about it is so compelling.

Cishet men grow up in a world where everything is designed for their appreciation, to win their attention. We don’t want them to perceive Vic because they’ll treat her sexuality like performance for their consumption. If they find her fuckable, it’s because she wanted them to. If they notice her smile, it’s because she was thrilled at the prospect of this objectification. They add helpful criticisms about her appearance & behavior so she – or more accurately, it – can be better desirable. Because why wouldn’t it want to modify itself for them? It was flirting. Fucking tease.

The male gaze makes no differentiation between the real, autonomous person & the fantasy in their heads, because Vic was never really a person to begin with. As in, she never reached the status of an entity entitled to give & withdraw consent. So why should they treat the autonomous person Victoria any different than the naked girl on its knees in their mind? Both are just objects.

The difference is that we’re attracted to Victoria as she is, as she voluntarily chooses to present herself. Decidedly unladylike, (why should she be otherwise?) bouncing & gyrating open mouthed, suggesting voyeurism. We’d never want Victoria to make herself less for us – less body, less vulgar. She retains her personhood.

So no, you’re not crazy.
