Trip to California live update: fish

Trip to California update: more fish

Bird (I wanted to just reach out and grab it so bad)

You don't have to say that about him, that's just mean.

… Oh hey! Thanks for the paddling through our cilia-ness up there—these black and white comb jelly abstracts were giving us some film noir vibes.
Ctenophores (“comb bearers”) are the largest animals on the planet powered by hair-like cilia—you may know these comb rows diffract incoming light into the signature rainbows you’ll see dancing along their sides at the Aquarium. Comb jellies are prolific predators in the plankton, and our amazing Jelly Team cracked the code of comb jelly culture several years ago with the introduction of larval fishes to their diet to encourage spawning.
Since then, we’ve had a steady supply of home-grown comb jellies to show to you all—hopefully you can visit them soon to let your own imaginoceans run wild 😅
This is a photo of: A. A sugar plum fairy B. New metroid C. The Voidfish from The Adventure Zone D. A deep-sea purple-lipped jelly E. All of the above

Looks like someone asked for iced tea without the tea 🥤 🧊
(Spoiler Alert: It was Rosa)

Shrimp. Shramp. Shrump!
Shellebrate the wonderful world of shrimp (and their shrimp-like friends) with this playful parody of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”. We promise by the end, you’ll want to hug a deep-sea shrimp, squeal about cleaner shrimp, and be fascinated by mysid shrimp!
If you weren’t shrimpressed before, we’re sea-rtain this song will krilly change your tune!

Mantis Shrimp, Seamount High, Sea-nior Class of 1984
Voted: Best Eyes & Most Likely to Start a Fight Favorite quote: “Party on, dudes.”
The mantis shrimp is truly bodacious—its radical colors and totally tubular eyes (they can move each eye independently!) are out of this world. It also packs a gnarly punch—capable of cracking glass—making it one of the baddest stomatopods around 💪😎
Rock on mantis shrimp, don’t ever change, and let’s hang out this summer!!
Mini living ocean roombas in their natural habitat.
Get a wiggle on this Monday with our sand dollars!
Be aware of sea otters
Know them
Be eternally conscious of their existence
Have not a thought which does not include them
For it is Sea Otter Awareness Week
There is no escape
Two ingredients: Sea otters and awareness—it’s that simple! 🦦
Sea Otter Awareness Week starts THIS SUNDAY and runs from September 22–28!
Stay tuned to all of our social channels “fur” another week full of fabulous fun featuring our favorite fuzzy fronds.
Sea a list of events and more.
One time, when I visited with my partner, we were talking to one of the volunteers at the bat ray exhibit, and they remembered a time when a little girl described the feeling of the bat rays as: "Soft, Wet Velvet"
We just want to put these on your ray-dar 😉
Bat rays call coral reefs, kelp forests, and sandy-bottom bays their home. One of these habitats is our very own local wetland, the Elkhorn Slough–home to southern sea otters, thousands of migratory birds, and an important nursery and feeding grounds for bat rays.
By raising awareness of these animals, voting, and letting our elected leaders at the local, state, and federal levels know we support legislation that protects these ecosystems, we can ensure that bat rays continue to thrive in their environment.
Moon jellies are my absolute favorite 😍

In case you need it today, here’s the link to our Moon Jelly Cam 💙
