Oh and another poll! Though, to be honest, it has nothing to do with my previous one, I’m just curious about this. I was talking the other day with a family member about how I can’t really translate some Armenian words into English, or how some Armenian words just didn’t exist at all in English/have an English counterpart. So I started to wonder, how common is this?

Once he saw Anthony, his best friend- the guy that’ll end up being the death of him; his plan flew right out the window, the second Mr. Chaos came into view. He has been dreading this day, but Tom said if he didn’t confess, he would. How could Steven, the science, multilingual nerd tell Chilled? THE Chilled? He is tall, he has the most penetrating gaze with those big, almost crazily fascinating brown spheres that can make Ze just want to stop and find out what made them have such an effect on him. The way his lips curl up and separate to show off those teeth, the way he tries to hold back his laughter so it won’t give him away. No wonder he has called himself “Chilled Chaos,” he’ll make you want to trust him, just so he could betray you. “Hey, Ze.” the Italian said as he made his way over to the short Canadian who just couldn’t hide the smile that immediately graced his features whenever the two talked, despite the harsh nerves. “Salute, Monsieur Chilled.” “Okay, okay! Ze “I-Learned-French-in-High-School” Viking, way to rub it in.” They both start to laugh, “One day, Chilled, you will one day learn Italian.” Steven let the words just flow out of his mouth, wondering if he could actually tell the man what he has too. “I will! Anyway, what is it that you needed to tell me? Make it quick, it is Friday, I have to make it home.” “Why? Just so you could play games and sleep all weekend?” “NO!” Two green, emerald eyes bore into the nervous, brown ones, he gave in. “Yes.., but I will do work also!” Steven sighs, regaining his companion’s attention, “Anthony,” he starts. He didn’t need his sense of sight to know that Anthony was taken back by the usage of his name. They all called each other by their nicknames because, in their friend group, there are two Anthonys and two Stevens. Chilled became hyperaware of the sincerity and seriousness of the situation, he mumbles, almost to himself, “Steven..?” Ze heard him but didn’t reply, he only opened his eyes, grass meets the soil, the dirt, once again. He hopes his eyes conveyed his words but he isn’t hopeful. He shut off his brain and let his heart take control. “I…,” he starts, anxiety turning into determination. “We have been friends for years, best even.” He went on explaining every little detail that just helped him fall even more in love with the older man. He rambled on and on. He finally decides that he wasn’t going to stop any time soon, he stopped himself short; or “short.” In the middle of his explanation, to stare lovingly at the ground, he made himself look back towards the eyes that were once filled with excitement. He didn’t seem too happy or anything; he was confused. For poor Steven, he mistook that confusion for him not returning his feelings. He quickly left, trying to be easy on his joints for his royal disease. The only thing that was running in Anthony’s mind was,
“Was he speaking Italian?”
Character: *speaks in a different language* Oh, whoops, sorry! It's hard to switch back sometimes!

Bi/Multilingual characters consciously switch between languages, unless they've been afflicted mentally, such as being delirious or running on a dangerously high fever. Please, if you're including a bi/multilingual character and want to intergrate that naturally into your story, just do a bit of research.
Reddit gives a lot of advice, as well as tumblr and maybe TikTok if you find the right side of it.
Bi/multilingual characters are only really likely to switch languages mid-sentence if there's a specific word that doesn't translate exactly to the general language. Even then, it's not likely that they'll instantly switch.
They may also switch languages for specific idioms or phrases that aren't common in the general language or just don't translate well at all.
Troubles with language: if they forget a word in the general language, they're likely to just go 'that thing' or try to describe it until someone else finds the word for them. Sometimes, they'll know the word in another language but not the general one. In most cases, if they can't remember the word in the moment, they'll remember it later and slap themselves in the face.
The more languages a character speaks, the more likely they are to forget words. Also, it's incredibly hard to become fluent in a language unless you interact with others speaking the same language. Colloquisms and such are hard to pick up on unless speaking and interacting with natives or that specific culture.
Some letters/characters are incredibly hard to pronounce properly unless you've been corrected on them multiple times and actually taught them by natives, though they most likely don't care about butchered pronounciation, unless it's a specific dialect. In that case, some might find it insulting.
I'm not bilingual or multilingual, so if you want proper advice, go to those reddit pages or tumblr posts that are actually written by people who are. Still, all this advice I've given is from my own research for my fanfics.
Seeing authors abuse google translate and go, 'yay, representation!', is very frustrating, especially because it relies on stererotypes and thus diminishes the representation. It happens more often than not, and that's really sad because you can make bilingual/multilingual troubles so funny.
Forgetting a word so you just shrug and start a new conversation because it's easier than trying to figure out what the word is. Swearing in another language so children don't pick it up, only for them to also speak that language. Speaking in a different language just to annoy everyone else who doesn't understand.
There's a lot of potential for comedy with this, but not when it's 'oops, it's hard to switch back/I get confused sometimes.' And, no. They do not switch when excited. It's a conscious decision, unless they're really, really out of it.
