NedCan V-Day Exchange - The Rules of Acquisition (Or Not) - Part 1
Dear @orbitinghetalia
Happy belated Valentine’s Day, here is Part 1 of your gift. I decided to write a Star Trek AU set after the Dominion War (after Deep Space 9). I hope that’s alright. It is a little dark in the beginning (attack on a ship) but it lightens up considerably afterwards. I’m sorry it is late and half complete, but it did run away from me a little. I’ll post the next bits as soon as I finish them! Hope you enjoy!

Notes:
The Ferengi were a warp-capable humanoid species from the planet Ferenginar. Ferengi civilization was built on a caricature of free enterprise, where earning profit was the sole meaningful goal in life, superseding all other endeavors.
The Ferengi governing body, known as the Ferengi Alliance, was formed over a period of ten thousand years, beginning with the establishment of a system of currency, to their purchase of warp technology, and finally to its state in the 24th century.
The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition were a numbered series of aphorisms, guidelines, and principles that provided the foundation of business philosophy in Ferengi culture.

Can I see you outside of the medbay sometime?
Netherlands - Johan van Rijn
Canada - Madeline Williams
Johan was walking through the hallways of the ship, making his way to the medbay after Mr. Scott had ordered him to report there. A minor accident had occured while he was working on a new project in engineering.
Something, he would look into that later, went wrong and he got himself hurt. When it happened, he had let out a yell that was equally pain and surprise. Hearing the sound, the head engineer had been by his side almost instantly. After he managed to pry Johan’s hand away from where he had been holding it against his body, the two men had watched together as his hand got redder quickly. Then the taller man was told to get the injury taken care of immediatly.
Walking into the medbay he was almost immediately greeted with the sight of nurse Madeline working at one of the stations. “Mr. Scott send me here. I had an accident in Engeneering.” He said, after he cleared his throat to draw her attention away from the screen in front of her.
Looking up at the sound, Madeline turned around and saw the tall engineer standing in medbay saying he had another accident. She was starting to worry that engineering might not be the best department for him.
“What happened?” He held up his left hand and she could see the blisters already starting to form there. “I did not pay as much attention as I should have. It’s a minor injury really, but Mr. Scott would not take no for an answer.” A frown formed on her face as she pushed her glasses a little higher on her nose and looked up at the man that a lot of the crew around the ship found intimidating. “That’s good for Mr. Scott and I’ll be the judge of how serious that injury is. Take a seat.” Pointing at one of the beds.
Johan walked over to the bed and sat down as he had been told to. After collecting the objects she would need, the blonde nurse joined him and held the tricorder over his hand. Reading the results, Maddie nodded her head slightly. “Alright. It’s not too bad, but it’s for the best that you came here immediately after it happened. These wounds get infected easily.” Setting the tricorder aside, Maddie sat down besides Johan and started putting a creme on his hand and wrapped a bandage over it, making sure that she covered all of the wounded area of skin. Once she was done she looked back at Johan, who had stayed quiet after taking his seat. “Is everything alright, Mr. van Rijn? You have been in here what, six times in six weeks.” The engineer shook his head. “Only five times in seven weeks, nurse Madeline.” After staring at her for a moment he added to it “Nothing is wrong, I’ve just been a little distracted lately.” “Hm.” She nodded “You did seem somewhat distracted since your first accident.” Her gaze went to the scar aboce his right eyebrow. “It did heal rather nice considering the injury. Does it bother you?” Johan shook his head. “No, it’s fine. It does not hurt nor look too bad.”
Before their conversation had a chance of going any further, Dr. McCoy walked out of his office and noticed the two crewmembers sitting closely together and let out a sigh. “Again, Mr. van Rijn?” Walking over to the bed he turned his attention to Madeline. “I’ll take it from here nurse.”
Madeline stood up from the bed. “I’m almost done, doctor.” She softly argued. “And I’m sure you have other work you still need to do. Also, I would like a word with our engineer alone.” He responded as he swiftely injected Johan with a hypospray. “Damn” the patient cursed as he quickly put his hand on the now sore spot. “Just a painkiller, don’t whine about it.”
Madeline left to continue the work she had been doing before Johan’s arrival in medbay. As soon as she was out of sight, the doctor turned toward his patient.
“You are going to stop showing up here when it isn’t needed and you really need to stop getting injured on purpuse.” The man sitting on the bed shook his head. “It’s not on purpose. I don’t get myself hurt for the fun of it.” Before he could jerk away, the doctor had already hit him with another hypospray. “Painkiller” he provided as an answer.
“If you like her that much” refering to the shy nurse “just ask her out. And stop coming to my medbay unless absolutely necessary.” As he handed the engineer the needed medication for his injury.
“I’m a doctor, not a matchmaker, damn it.” With that Johan went back to engineering and Doctor McCot retreated to his office.
Johan found himself in the medbay again the next day after asking Mr. Scott if he could make a quick trip there. Claiming his hand was hurting and he preferd it if someone from the medical staff had a look at it. Just to be sure.
Doubting the story, as van Rijn wasn’t the type to go to medbay voluntarely, he let the man go anyway. Just in case. He could always use a man who cared about the health of a ship that much and returned to his own work. So many things to take care of to insure that his beloved grey lady was in the best condition she could possibly be.
Dr. McCoy felt like exploding when he saw the engineer enter his medbay again after he told him to stay away just the previous day. “van Rijn…” before he was interrupted by said man. “Just here for one question.” The doctor raised his eyebrows. “You want to know…” and he stopped halfway his sentence once more as the man walked away from him.
Towards nurse Williams.
Johan couched lightly to catch her attention. When she turned around, he gave her a slight smile that was barely visible to stop that frown from forming on her face again. “Hello Madeline,” he hesitated a second before continuing “Can I see you outside of the medbay sometime? Maybe get some coffee?” First she was shocked, McCoy feared one of his best nurses was now broken, before her face turned bright red and she silently nodded while looking at her feet.
Then she softly told the man asking her out “You can call me Maddie.”
“Damn it” McCoy thought “I am a matchmaker.”

“Tell me one of your scary stories.” She said softly.
“One of my scary stories?” Johan asked as he tried to find the candles he kept in the closet in case of emergency.
“We all have them.” Madeline stated, while she listened to him moving things around.
“I don’t have a lot of them though.”
For a second, Madeline was blinded by a sudden light she had not expected. Then she saw Johan standing in front of her with a lit candle and a box of extra candles on the table. He motioned for her to make some room and sat down besides her on the couch. “This power failure could last a while, not exactly what I had in mind for your visit here.”
Maddie smiled gently at him as she sat closer to him and Johan put his arm around her. “It’s alright. Just tell me a story.” She answered while she fixed the throw around them.
The man gave her a glance, before sighing and giving in to her. Johan would never understand how others could forget about her or see his Maddie as a shy and timid girl. He had only ever seen her as a strong, determined woman.
“Sailors used to say that a ship that had left but neither reached its destination or ever returned to its home haven, must either have sunk or still be sailing out there somewhere.” He began. “I’ll tell you about a ship, or the remnants of a ship that sometimes dooms up out of the fog that covers the waters. Sometimes a great, black bird is seen circling around the masts.”
“I love the way you enjoy telling the story of the Flying Dutchman.” She murmured.
He stared at her, almost offended.
“What’s wrong?” she quickly inquired.
“Different story, different ship.” He informed her. “For one, the ships sailed out from different harbours.” She couldn’t be sure in the light of the candle, but she thought he might be sulking.
Before she could ask him to continue his story, her other half already moved on.
“Another story then. I once had this small island, before the construction of the Afsluitdijk and turning the Zuiderzee into the Ijsselmeer, that had this story. On a specific spot on that island was a place where witches and warlocks gathered. On evenings like that the people of the island would stay inside. These nights, when clouds would pass in front of the full moon, a ship would sail through the sky above Schokland and the people of the islands knew that somewhere-”
“Another ship, Johan?” Madeline asked.
“This one sailed through the sky, it’s different.” He argued.
“You’re just obsessed with ships, darling.” She whispered in return.
“They’re a part of my past, my golden age. Not even England had a merchant fleet as large as mine.”
“I know.”
“He only had around a 180 ships.”
“Not a lot?” It must have been for the time.
“I had some 2500 merchant ships at the time.” He stated proudly.
“You are and were obsessed.” The Canadian woman said smiling bright. She loved it when this man besides here gave himself so completely to something.
“Maybe.” Johan conceded.
Leaning against him, Maddie listend to Johan as he softly told her the story about a stone.
“…and in that lane, you can find the Bloedsteen.”
“What is so special about that stone?”
“Like the name says, it’s bleeds.”
“It does what?”
Johan shrugged his shoulders. “It bleeds, but only during full moon and you have to stab it with a needle.”
“A bloodstone?”
“Yes, stab it and blood comes flowing from the, well, the wound.” He leaned forward to lit another candle and blow out the dying one. Sitting back he continued. “It’s a relatively modern story.”
“Our people will always come up with new stories.”
“I’m just curious why they chose to focus on the stone. They could have made a ghost story about the burial mount beneath the maze at the end of the lane.”
Maddie stared at him incredulously.
“The name of that lane is Doolhoflaan for a reason.” He simply provided at the look she gave him.

Wedding day
Johan - Netherlands
Henri - Luxembourg
Emma - Belgium
Broer - brother
Broertje - little brother
He is standing in front of the mirror. He is still standing in front of that mirror. Was he really this vain? Checking his hair and tie once more, Johan couldn’t stop himself. Everything had to be perfect. It wasn’t common for him to be this nervous about something, but today is a very special day.
“Johan, broer, turn around.” Ah, just what he needed. The voice of his baby brother to drag him out of his own thoughts and he did as the younger man told him to.
“What is it, Henri, broertje?” He asked, before darling little brother nearly strangled him with his own tie.
“Now it’s straight. Don’t think I did not notice that you were glaring at your tie.”
Johan turned towards the mirror again to check if it really was straight.
“It’s straight, don’t you dare touch it.”
“.. find it hard to believe.” Johan blinked and tried to focus and remember what Henri had been talking about.
“You are actually going to sign the most important document in your life.” Henri continued and smiled happily at his brother.
“One of the most important.” Johan corrected. “I’m a nation and I have duties to my people.”
“No.” His little brother argued. “The most important one, this one is just for you. And the one you love the most. It’s special.”
He opened his mouth to disagree, but simply closed it again. Opened it again. Closed it again. Madeline was special. She was his life since she had saved his life. Even with the lifespan of a nation, he wouldn’t love another like he loved Canada.
The door opened slightly and Emma poked her head around the corner. With her typical grin, she looked at her brothers. “Are the both of you ready?” Shifting her gaze to look directly into Johan’s eyes, his younger siblings were conspiring against him even on a day like this, she continued.
“Johan, your bride is ready and waiting for you to come pick her up.”
Then Emma’s smile turned into more of a smirk.
“Francis, Arthur and Alfred are waiting with her. Good luck.”
That proved it, his sister was secretly wanted to see him suffer. She was enjoying the idea of him facing Maddie’s family alone. Threatening him. Typically Emma.

Henri - Luxembourg
Maddie/Madeline - Canada

One minute Maddie had simply been making her way through one of her cities, another she was tackled from behind. A pair of arms wrapping around her waist. Before she could even react, a hand took hers and she heard a familiar voice. “Emma, you should not scare her like that. Hello Madeline.”
Eh.. Henri. Maddie could never decide if he got his good manners from his brother or his sister. Usually she came to the conclusion he didn’t get it from either of them. Luxembourg’s manners were just to refined for blunt, maybe even rude, Netherlands or happy, uncaring, Belgium.
“Salut Henri, Emma. You can let go of me now.” Though she mainly meant Emma, as she didn’t try to shake of Henri’s hand. “What are the two of you doing in my country? Not that I mind,” Of course she didn’t, they were her in-laws-to-be and Johan adored his younger siblings, still “but I don’t think I forgot any kind of important, international meeting.”
At that, Henri let go of Maddie’s hand and stepped in front of her. Emma moved to stand besides her younger brother. “It’s international.” She said. Henri elaborated. “Marriage between two nations, on international level or not. Johan told us he proposed to you, Maddie, and that you said yes.” He told her smiling.
He had already told his siblings. She should have known. They were so close and Johan wouldn’t have been able to hide it even if he wanted to. Europe wasn’t all that large and word travelled fast there. The BeNeLux was even smaller, Emma and Henri would noticed anyway.
“You know already, I haven’t even told my family yet” Maddie admitted, they were just so busy. She couldn’t always reach them and when she was able to, they seemed to forget that she was the one that called them. Telling her about their lives and hanging up on her before she could tell them what had happened in hers. Like being proposed to. Like being engaged. Like to be married.
Emma and Henri shared a look. “What?” She asked. “Well,” Emma started “you know that Magnus is Johan’s best friend. My brother doesn’t share private things like this with many people.” Belgium just sighed. “He does share it with Denmark,” Henri supplied, “and he shares it with everyone.” Maybe that’s how some of the old world’s rumour wildfires had started, the Canadian thought.
“He already told so many people?” the Canadian asked. “Just us three, and he probably told his government that he was going to do it.” Henri responded. “Denmark would have known something was going on anyway.” Emma provided.
Maddie simply took out her mobile phone. “I’ll send something to Francis, Arthur and Alfred.” Maddie muttered, as both Henri and Emma had both taken a hold of her hand and dragged her towards the more exciting parts of the city.
She had tried to call them. If they learned of the wedding just before it happened, it wasn’t her fault, she had tried. Maddie just hoped her family would show up in time.

Proposal 5+1
1. Champagne
A bit of nervousness, the wish for this night to be absolutely perfect, had been present. An completely normal feeling as tonight was a very important evening. Even so, Canada had not been quite ready for the almost overwhelming feeling that closely bordered a panic attack.
This dinner had been planned to the tiniest detail. All of the staff had been informed on how to behave and when to act.
There would be pleasant conversation, they never seemed to run out of things to tell each other, shared over several courses of fine food. Then the desserts would be served and the waiter would bring them the glasses of champagne.
And Laurens would get a glass of champagne that would contain the ring Canada picked out with the greatest care. Only the best would do for him.
If only the Dutchman across the table hadn’t been able to see the slight panic attack coming from miles away. The other had always been able to notice these things when most other nations weren’t even able to tell Canada was present among them.
Which must have been the reason he ignored all the staff calling after them as he tugged his blonde lover after him out of the restaurant towards what he probably imagined to be a safe zone.
Inside the restaurant, a waiter was holding two glasses of champagne.
One of those contained an engagement ring.
2. Winter weather
After retrieving the ring from the restaurant, it had taken Canada some time to work up the courage to try again. Then an even better idea than the champagne had occurred.
Snow
The Dutchman loved snow, ice and ice skating.
Due to the changes in climate the world was experiencing, the winters didn’t get as could as they once used to at his place. The man would always talk about the layers upon layers of snow he once had to deal with too.
He always managed to make it sound like he missed it. This year also marked the longest period of time between two editions of his ‘Elfstedentocht’, making him clearly upset for a change.
Which gave Canada the best idea of any for a successful proposal.
They would go for a walk through to great amounts of snow Canada had up in the north.
Where one nation would propose to another.
Canada and Netherlands went on that walk as planned.
Which was not part of the plan was Canada going down on one knee in order to propose and almost disappearing in the snow. Really, that happening in a country’s own land was nearly unforgivable.
Laurens pulled the other nation out of the snow and into their cabin.
Maybe Canada should have proposed in front of that fireplace.
A missed opportunity that papa might never forgive if he would hear of it.
3. Hot air balloon
This time Canada was sure of having thought of the most romantic way to propose. The ring was hidden in a pocket of the blonde’s coat who was holding the hand of the Dutch nation, guiding them towards the hot air balloon that was waiting for the two and into the basket.
Proposal hadn’t worked on the ground, which meant it was going to work high up in the air.
Grinning at the European nation as the hot air balloon was slowly starting to leave the ground bellow the behind, the younger country hugged the older man.
Out of sight and hidden behind the other’s back, Canada took out the box containing the ring from the coat’s pocket and stared at the deep red velvet colour of the small box.
In the attempt to break that same hug, which had been returned, in order to kneel down inside the basket they were standing in, the blonde actually managed to drop that little box.
And of course it wouldn’t fall on the floor of the hot air balloon basket. No, Canada saw it tumble over the edge and all the way down.
Really, it all happened in slow motion. Everything except the feeling of horror.
They were never, ever getting in a hot air balloon ever again.
Damn it.
4. London
The first thing on the to do list after the hot air balloon ride had been getting a new ring. Finding the first one would have been an impossible task. Or at the very least a task that would have taken years.
As nations, they actually did have those years to wait and it wouldn’t even really matter at all. Except that, in this case, it would. Just because they could wait didn’t mean the northern nation had any intentions to wait any longer making the greatest personal connection to the European nation.
Having run out of ideas, Canada had turned to Arthur.
The man had listened patiently and intently to the stories of failed proposals.
Closing his eyes and setting his needle work aside, the old island nation had only smiled and assured his former colony that he would make sure the two of them would be alone on the London Eye.
And they had been on their own in a carriage of the London Eye. It hadn’t been that hard to convince the taller nation to go to one of the most touristic attractions of the city, but he became suspicious of everything that was happening around them as soon as they stepped inside and no one else joined them.
“What’s going on?” Laurens had asked his lover directly. “Is this some kind of joke Arthur bullied you into?”
“No, of course not..” the younger had managed to say.
“No, of course not.” The other had repeated. “It’s your brother and Arthur lets him get away with anything.”
Canada held onto the hidden inside the pocket, but didn’t dare to pull it out in fear of the proposal being interpreted as a practical joke.
5. Paris
It was a cliché. A cliché as badly as they can possible come.
Of course the first thing Canada’s papa had done when he heard the story of the last attempt at proposal was laughing. Laughing until the Frenchman had nearly choked on his wine.
After that he had complained for a while about the fact that the other blonde had gone to Arthur for help first.
Eventually, Francis had agreed to help the young nation. As soon as it was asked, the older man was on his phone making all the arrangements necessary.
Naturally, as soon as the last call for the special night had ended, the man had called England to tell him how he had failed the former colony and how the French nation would fix any damage that might have been done.
Not that any damage had been done between the two lovers, except some hurt pride on one side.
Which is how the two of them had ended up on the highest level of the Eiffel tower looking out over the city and all its lights. It was a lovely sight and Canada had already been in the process of pulling out the box containing the ring when out of the blue, Laurens pulled the love of his life close for a passionate kiss.
Prompting Canada to drop the box.
Over the edge.
The northern nation simply sucked at proposals, especially when done at great heights.
Or maybe they weren’t meant to be spouses.
6. The proposal
There had been knocking on the front door.
The volume level of the knocking was usually only heard when Alfred decided on an unannounced visit to his sibling’s house, yet the rhythm was telling to be someone else.
Opening the door, Canada was face to face with a huge bouquet of red and white tulips.
“I don’t think it’s that time of the year yet.”
“It’s not, but these flowers are a different kind of gift.” And the European nation got down on one knee. “My sister told me I am the biggest idiot in the world for not noticing a proposal if it hit me in the face. Which you wouldn’t do, the hitting I mean, because you’re the kindest person I have ever known.”
Canada took the flowers from him as he took out a box with inside it what just might be the most beautiful ring ever known.
“You did propose, didn’t you, and I was the moron who didn’t notice.”
Canada nodded slowly.
And then the actual question was asked.
“Will you marry me?”

NedCan Week Interest Check
Hello everyone! So, since the blog that once ran NedCan week has appeared to have discontinued the event, I decided to…I guess…revive it in sense. So the plan is to host the event in May (most likely the 23rd to the 29th since another event is going on in that month, but that is subject to change if people suggest another week) if there is enough interest. In other words, like, reblog and spread the word so we can make this event happen!
