This is originally from a comment I posted on r/autisminwomen on a post asking why autism is celebrated in media but not in real life. However, I really really like my answer and wanted to post it here, ESPECIALLY since I talk about divergent so much on my blog. So, here you go:
I think part of the reason I really liked the divergent series so much is because tris's voice in the books is so... Autistic??? I can agree that the book isn't... The best piece of literature ever.... But I think that there's some part of me that will always love that book because it made me feel weirdly normal.
(Oh and while we're at it for 2012 dystopian ya novels - katniss from the hunger games was just an autistic slay.)
But back to divergent. I think this is also why people didn't like the books and (in my opinion) acted like they were worsely written than they were. People are happy to accept autistic characters/autistic coded characters in an act of performance and weird savior fantasy. But, when someone actually has autism (or a character is portrayed with more realistic, less "black and white" autism), this weird internalized ableism comes out in a very subconscious way. I remember hearing about a research article talking about how nts subconsciously notice autistic people almost immediately by a sense of uneasiness or "uncanny valley". People are all too happy to watch the guy on atypical and infantilise him to the point of feeling like they're rooting for a kid in a coming of age movie, but are very happy to jump on characters like Devi in Never Have I Ever for being "too weird" and "too grown to be acting that way".
The celebration for autism in media is a show. The more you realize it, the more you notice it.

Favorite TV Show Ships
I had to really think about this since I've been so hyperfixated on TVDU for so long that I had to remember what other shows I like. I have trouble picking favorites but here are a bunch of shows I routinely rewatch, mainly because of the ships.

Bridgerton -- Kate & Anthony (super excited for Colin and Penelope)
Wednesday -- I'm fine with there being no romantic relationships and it all staying platonic but I love Enid and Wednesday's relationship so far
Grey's Anatomy -- Lexie & Mark, April & Jackson, Alex & Jo, Bailey & Ben (I haven't seen the last few seasons)
Parks & Rec -- Ben & Lesly
The Good Place -- Chidi & Eleanor
And I can now say PJO -- I've always loved the book series and have been enjoying the show. It's not cannon in the show yet but Percabeth is one of my all time favorite ships

I can totally understand when Ben was turned off to Aneesa just 'winging it' during their presentation. He's attracted to intelligence, and it shows when he competes with Devi. Another reason why I don't find Paxton attractive because he's repeating a class, showing his lack of care. I'm attracted to intelligence personally, and I only noticed that he was repeating the class when I was re-watching the show.
A.k.a I just love Ben.

Its a full moon and to avoid any conflict with others or any miscommunication, Im staying in the whole day today til tomorrow to binge these.. chores and errands can wait 😅 season 3, lets go!
just watched heartbreak high, and can we get a brown female lead whose character arc doesn't include being the absolutely worst, most insufferable, self centered person to their loved ones? like someone who doesn't go out of their way to make the worst choices or center themselves in other peoples' suffering? i want characters who make mistakes, but it would also be nice to root for them too
One thing I don’t like about Never Have I Ever is how it portrays brown guys. There were like three and out of those three the two that were connected to their culture were portrayed as red flags. Des was a mommas boys and Prashant, I can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t exactly supportive of Kamala’s whole issue with the research paper. And the only one guy who ends up in a relationship is whitewashed. Than there’s Mohan, who’s dead. Even Pati ended up with a white guy (from what I heard as I haven’t watch season 4 yet).
Des was perfect for Devi, he was nice, repeating, challenged her academically and put her in her place about her views about their culture. I like to think he was the reason Devi started appreciating and accepting her culture more and while I love Devi’s character development from hating her culture to accepting it and appreciating it, I would’ve loved to see more of brown culture explored. I really wanted to see a brown couple go through Navratri, playing Garba, Diwali, Holi, and all the other festivals together. Also no white man understands how fun and exciting it feels when you’re celebrating these like someone from the same culture. I know a lot of brown girls say brown men are red flags and while that may be true and it’s a whole different conversation as why they might be like that, not every brown guy is like a red flag. The way they grew up and who they were raised by plays a huge role on who they are, everyone is different and I really wish brown guys were portrayed in a better light because this is also a stereotype although maybe not as bad as the whole “all brown guys are creeps and pervs,”
There’s also almost no representation of brown couple in media, there’s like one I can think of and that’s Asha and Ravi from Netflix’s Wedding Season.
Ms. Marvel also have good representation of brown men and, mixed race relationships, that’s aren’t yk just white x POC

I was playing a game of never have I ever with some friends. Then they said “never have I ever… wanted to hook up with our dear Star (me)”. They immediately started downing the water we had and started volunteering if I was okay with. So, I don’t know if I’m flattered or confused on how they would want me. I’m not a pretty person.
