Skullcaps and Catbirds

Birds were always comforting for Ostreatus. Ever since he’d been a child, when he would ogle at the big falcons his mom rode. Even now, at the ripe old age of 29 years old, he felt himself pause in awe at the grayish-brown catbird standing in front of him. A grin grew on his face as the bird, Johnny, chirped loudly. It unfortunately startled the poor scout-in-training who was saddling him up and Ostreatus winced in sympathy. In an instant, Johnny rose and bounded to him like an excited dog, leaving the trainee to scramble after him. Ostreatus huffed slightly, but still smiled as Johnny lightly headbutted him in the chest.
“You would think that you’ve been gone for years instead of a few hours.” Ostreatus turned to face the other person, Commander Mycena. She leaned against one of the empty stalls, a playful grin spread on her cheeks. He straightened as she approached, and banished any liveliness he felt prior.
“Commander, you called me in here?” He asked. Her smile faded slightly at his tone, but she said nothing. Mycena moved to the main opening of the stable, gesturing for them to follow. He frowned, but followed, with Johnny at his heels.
The “stable”, was a series of nests lined up in stalls for the scouts-birds to sleep in before going out on expeditions. It was built into the upper parts of an old oak, which previously housed an owl family. It was bustling with action, with many other scouts readying their own birds for take-off. Briskly, both Ostreatus and Mycena walked to the entrance that overlooked the outpost. On the ground, fellow members of the area began to start their day. Johnny jumped up to the ledge, and stretched his wings in the morning sun.
“Scout Pleu,” she began. “ I’m gonna need you to investigate some flooding up North. Some kind of…blockade. Its caused a shift in the flow of our water supply, and we need to know any alternative routes.” She ordered, turning directly to face him. He gave a curt nod in response, and mounted Johnny’s back. The bird chirped in response, gently shifting to be more comfortable. They were about to go when Ostreatus felt a hand on his leg. He looked to see Mycena staring deeply into his eyes, a slight grimace on her face. “Be careful. Giants have begun to… interfere with our forests as of late.” She cautioned.
“Yes Commander. We’ll be back as soon as we can.” He affirmed. She smiled in relief, and took a step back. With a gentle breath, he tightened the fastens on his gray cloak, and clutched the reins in his gloved palms. He gently urged Johnny forward, and the bird leaped off the side of the tree. When Ostreatus was younger, he’d been startled by the suddenness and spontaneity of these birds, but now he only whooped for joy as the wind rushed through his black hair.
Johnny swooped up, just missing the winding branches and rustling green leaves. Ostreatus pressed himself against the birds body as they broke through the trees and into the sky. For a moment, the world was quiet as they rose higher, slowly catching the winds of the skies. Johnny gently flapped his wings, and they both allowed themselves to look over the lands they called home.
The sun slowly rose over the horizon, lighting the woodlands of trees in a warm glow. A sea of greens greeted him, and a sense of calm washed over him. He took a deep breath, and nose-dived back into the treetops, unknowing of what fate had planned for him.
