A scene from The Titans Curse that constantly replays in my mind whenever I remember it; is when Nico first gets the news that Bianca is dead. Not necessarily how he takes the news, but what he is described to look like before.

' …There was a knock on the door, and Nico di Angelo came huffing into the parlor, his cheeks bright red from the cold. He was smiling, but he looked around anxiously. ”

It’s a very short description but my interpretation of this scene was: Nico had probably been just playing out in the snow happily with the new friends he’d made at camp. Word spread quickly that Percy and the others had come back, oblivious of what horrible news awaited him, he ran to look for his only family. Who he had probably missed a lot and was deeply worried for while she was away.

I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but it’s the most simple and innocent way to describe what a 10 year old kid at that age would look like. Does that make sense? It’s the anxious way a child would act just before having your worst fears be ether be proved false or confirmed true.

In a real life situation, a kid could overhear you having a conversation with another adult (whether over the phone or face-to face) about the passing of a close family member. They are unsure and asking themselves if what they heard you talking about is really true. So they ask you, and you lie and promise them everything is okay. Because telling a child bad news is never fun and the emotional distress that it will cause you and them is unbelievable. Then some time passes and you finally break the news to them.

In Nico’s case, we know he had been having nightmares about Bianca in the fields of Asphodel.

“My nightmares were right! .. She’s dead .. I should’ve known it earlier. She’s in the Fields of Asphodel, standing before the judges right now, being evaluated. I can feel it.”

It goes how you would expect, badly. They feel anger and sadness combined. Anger because you told them a lie, and on top of that broke a promise. Sadness because their worst fear just came true and someone they loved with all of their heart is no longer here.

In a little different in Percy’s case because he technically didn’t actually break the promise or lie.

“.. you have to promise to to keep my sister safe. ”

“I … that’s a big thing to promise, Nico, on a trip like this. Besides, she’s got Zoë, Grover and Thalia — ”

“Promise, ” he insisted.

[ “ll’l do my best, I promise that. ” ]

But it seems nether Nico or Percy really remembers the details of the promise?

“You promised you would protect her,” Nico said. He might as well have stabbed me with a rusty dagger. It would’ve hurt less than reminding me of my promise. ”

Regardless, my point was to say that Nico’s reaction also adds to his characterization in this scene. it aligns. A 9-10 year old is not gonna remember that you only promised to try your best at what they asked of you. And they are not gonna care. They instead are going to blame you for “breaking” it nonetheless, and also everything bad that came of it. They are going to cry and scream. Because they don’t know how else to process the information that was just given to them. And everything is happening too fast.

“You promised!” He glared at me, his eyes rimmed with red. He closed his small fist around the god statue … “ I shouldn’t have trusted you.” His voice broke. “You lied to me. ” … He flung the god statue to the ground. It clattered across the icy marble. “I hate you!” … He closed his eyes. His whole body trembled with rage. ”

I think Rick Riordan did suchh an amazing job at depicting/writing the loss of innocence. It can happen in lots of different ways; but I think the way he wrote this scene in particular, was a perfect way to describe one tragic and depressing way out of many. So many other characters in PJO/HOO experience the loss of innocence and I think that’s just a really sad and common theme in all of his books. :,)
