Nex Benedict was a indigenous trans nonbinary teenager. They were beaten to death in a bathroom stall. Conservatives say they want to, "protect the children", where was the protection for Nex? That's the thing. There wasn't any. Nex died. And many more trans, queer, and nonbinary minors will if we don't step up and do something. What happened to Nex has and will happen to queer folk around the globe. Say their name.
at my social work orientation and we're talking about school social workers and the job description was "working with students in exceptional situations" and i just can't stop thinking about myself and my friends in school and how we were so loudly mentally ill. we missed class, we disappeared to the bathroom, we missed assignments, we broke down crying at least weekly, we showed up with long sleeves and pants in summer, shit i showed up with visible cuts multiple times. i was genuinely screaming for help, i made almost no attempts to hide the fact that i was desperate for it. but i wasn't exceptional. i was in ib, i had mostly A's, i did sports, music, i worked a job, my parents were together, we were wealthy. i wasn't exceptional. and i know people needed resources more than me, i know they have so much less and priorities should be on them. but i can't help being furious. i was going through active abuse, there was domestic violence in my house, i had sexual trauma i wasn't aware of, i wanted to die with every fiber of my being. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE. i was terrified that if nobody helped me, i would not survive. but i couldn't just ask for with my words, not when i my parents would be called, not even everybody would be so surprised and disappointed. i deserved help too, even though my situation wasn't exceptional. i kept myself alive, my best friends kept me alive, this system that i am going to dedicate my life to did not keep me alive. i am forever proud of myself and proud of my community for keeping ourselves alive, but we shouldn't have been our only resources.
The project 2025 thing is very real. Make sure that this doesn’t happen with all your might. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t affect you, it will. Read the rest of the poem. It doesn’t matter because you will be affected in some way, at some point. If that isn’t enough to convince you, maybe some empathy will? Feel some empathy for trans and queer youth who can’t get out. If it does happen be prepared to run or fight the fight you should have fought earlier. I promise you, fighting now is much easier than fighting then.

I think that 2023 is a good time for many of us, and allies in particular, to practice again the dying art of minding our own fucking business when it comes to the identities and lives of other people.
You see someone from one of your classes in a public place with a different gender presentation/expression than they typically have? Mind your own business.
You discover that one of your coworkers is in a same gender relationship, but they aren't out at work? Not your place to share that information in the workplace.
You notice that your neighbor in a red state takes a road trip across state lines with their transgender child every 3-6 months? No you fucking didn't.
You overhear students in your classroom using a different name and different pronouns for one student than you are used to using? If you live in a state hostile to trans rights, pretend that you don't know anything about this and report nothing.
You suspect that an acquaintance of yours might be gay, but they deny it when asked directly? Leave them the fuck alone.
One of your friends refuses to publicly label their sexuality? Good for them, you aren't entitled to that information anyway.
Your sibling comes out to you as questioning, but isn't comfortable sharing that with your parents yet? Keep your fucking mouth shut.
Don't out people; coming out is a personal choice not a moral obligation. Don't demand personal information about other people's sexuality or sex lives. You aren't entitled to information about anyone's gender identity, assigned gender at birth, or transition.
Bring back privacy, allow people to have control over the information that is shared about them publicly; it might save their job, their housing, their parental rights and their child's safety, or even save lives.
Reminder:
Transphobia hurts all women, including cis women.
Statistics show that harassment and violence against cis women have increased ever since transphobes started to intensify discrimination against our trans sisters, trans brothers, and trans siblings...
This is because, as people have been encouraged to police and persecute trans folk, it has increased the ways in which people police the bodies, rights, and behaviors of women, and to demonize femininity, across the board.
Look it up.
Little cis girls have been harassed on sports fields, in schools, and on playgrounds for being tomboys and "appearing" to be trans; and some cis women have even been murdered on the mere suspicion of being trans.
The solution is NOT to be even more transphobic and find "better" ways to discriminate. 🙄 That is TRASH.
The solution is to stand firmly against the sexism that stands at the ROOT of homophobia, transphobia, and queerphobia to begin with; by standing against transphobia and discrimination against trans people.
The gender binary isn't real, bioesentiallism blows (not in the good way), and patriarchal structures are not worth defending.
Let people be whatever hue and color and texture of gender they are, stop policing them about it!

CW AND TW: CHILD DEATH
Say.

Nex Benedict was a indigenous trans nonbinary teenager. Their head was beaten against the floor in a bathroom stall. Less than 24 hours later, they died, most likely from undiagnosed head trauma. Conservatives say they want to, "protect the children", where was the protection for Nex? That's the thing. There wasn't any. Nex died. And many more trans, queer, and nonbinary minors will if we don't step up and do something. What happened to Nex has and will happen to queer folk around the globe. Say their name.
Edit: I didn't expect this to get much attention, but thank you everyone. What alot of people, "forget" to mention was that Nex was two spirited, which means they were indigenous. The fact that I wouldn't have heard about this if I didn't have Tumblr is absolutely revolting. News needs to be covering this. But what are Republicans doing? Sucking their thumbs and crying about how, "trans people shouldn't be able to piss". What are Democrats doing? Twiddling their thumbs and groveling to an old geezer that somehow falls up the stairs and supports I$r3@l. It's disgusting and America needs to do better.
Edit 2: Any and all hate/saying that Nex Benedict wasn't murdered (they were) will immediately get deleted, just because you don't like trans people doesn't mean you can be an whiny little bitch. A child was murdered. This has nothing to do with politics, a child was murdered.
