I feel like the main reason this evil shanks theory is so prevalent (besides the private meeting the the gorsei which up even I can’t explain) is that his general cheeriness and lackadaisical disposition is more of a presented front, a mask to be slipped on and off at will which would be fine if he weren’t often put in the same boat as Roger and Luffy two people ( for as much as we know about roger) who have no masks at all.

Don’t get me wrong I’m pretty sure that Shanks is a naturally happy, good natured dude but he’s also the most politically minded pirate we have seen on the show (and some of these pirates were actual politicians) like I’m pretty sure Roger is more mature and secretive than Luffy ( makes sense he’s older and has seen more of the world) but with both of them you never get the sense that their silliness is something they are putting on for the direct purpose of making themselves less of a threat. They both can get serious when the situation calls for it but that feels more of an extension of their already established personality more than a hidden personality.

While with shanks it’s undeniable that something changed within him and his goals the day Roger died I don’t know if Roger actually told him something or if he just wasn’t dealing with the abandonment well it was probably a mix of both honestly. But yeah Shanks comes off as a guy with his ear to the ground someone who has schemes on schemes on schemes. he’s someone playing in the long run, kind of like crocodile but not nefarious. And when compared with a straight forward head first always kinda guy like Luffy, like he often is, he can come off a little suspicious.

There’s something that’s a little fake about his cheer, something a little too performative about his optimism and foolishness. I think it’s a mix of; he’s housing a deep sadness, he’s more of a realist that an optimist and also dudes just a pacifist unlike like luffy who loves to brawl ( like luffy knows when it’s better not to fight but he also loves a good fight) and he would rather deescalate a situation than fight it out and sometimes the easiest way to do that is with an air of cluelessness and making yourself seem less of a threat which makes it so much more jarring but effective when he reveals just how big a threat he is. but I can see why people think it’s suspicious.

(Interestingly even when luffy tries to emulate this behavior like when he first encountered Bellamy at the pub his plan is to just not react which while in the same vain is very different than Shanks actively playing the drunken good natured take it on the chin role for the bandits Luffy was still essentially himself he just refused to react while Shanks played a role which made it more terrifying and effective when he stopped)

Also it doesn’t help that until recently he’s largely been missing from the narrative with just a man echoing or a whisper here or there of how powerful he is.

But I think we should remember that Shank’s goal is essentially world peace. and peace, a true lasting peace, is just a little more of a precarious balancing act, than utmost freedom. For freedom you have to destroy the old game, for peace you have to learn to play a new one, hopefully with a bit more kindness injected into the foundation.

What I think is fun is that Beckman is significantly older than both Shanks and Mihawk and he doesn’t give a singular fuck about whatever titles they may hold he can, he will and he does lecture Mihawk, along with Shanks, about the stupid shit they get up to when they meet up put their extremely smart heads together and somehow produce a negative braincell.

And Mihawk, will just pout and take it, as he is denied dinner till he cleans up his mess. Because There’s just some battles you can’t win when a man has known you at 19.

Here is me proposing that maybe not the song but the vibes of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” music video is very Mishanks.

Just the general vibes of being super embarrassed not about the fact that your partner is a criminal but because they are so pathetic about it.

Mihawk reading the morning News Paper and seeing that the red haired pirates have ransacked an armoires navy ship and the front page is an obviously posed picture of Shanks giving what he thinks is a pretty boy smile and finger guns. And Mihawk just sighs morning cup of coffee ruined can’t believe he’s attached his name to this ingrate.

It’s so funny to think about but because Shanks is who he is. He probably threw a party for Mihawk the first time they met up after Mihawk was finally tall enough to wear Yoru straight down his back.

Bonus if Shanks had already had his growth spurt and Mihawk was getting genuinely worried he had hit his final height and would never complete his aesthetic. (Also Shanks already lords over the one inch he could not have handled a several inches height difference it would have actually killed him if he didn’t kill himself first)

Also of course he pulls up with the Long coat and the hat already in checks who do you think this is?

Rosa and Amy are obviously represented by Benn and Shanks respectively and this is a red haired party with another crew. Benn was assigned to making sure an overstimulated mihawk doesn’t kill anyone duty while Shanks plays the ever gracious host. Who knows why the psychologists are there I don’t

Mihawk calls Shanks 'Red' for the first time in the middle of a duel while Shanks is being all suave and he immediately face plants almost impaling himself on his sword. The RHPs watching from a safe distance taking bets on just how Shanks was going to lose, Oh in uninition. Money changes hands

Shanks would definetly call Mihawk every pet name under the sun ranging from cute nicknames to just straight deranged why would you say that, how did you come up with that mismatch of words.

And Mihawk would refer him to him solely by his epithet. Might call him Shanks if he’s feeling spicy.

Hi folks.

So I've come to the realization the that the Crane Wives song "Never Love an Anchor" just fits stupidly thematically well with luffy as a charecter.

Parent Crocodile Theory? That is absolutely an emotionally incapable crocodile apologizing to luffy before he ever got to know him.

Dragon? He chose to give luffy up probably before he was born, and luffy wasn't even aware that was his dad. He's apologizing for ever having to give luffy up. Specifically the "my chest is filled with guilt and not remorse" line (or something like that).

And worst of all, Shanks. The man who knew luffy and still chose to leave. The one that impacted luffy the most out of ALL of them. The man luffy carved his life around. The name Anchor, that comes from a pirate captain that rooted his way into this small child. The one who left of his own volition.

It just hurts, man. Like, there is not an adult luffy has met (besides those on his crew) that have chosen him above all else. Poor baby.
