fans can believe what they want about who is really responsible for Ace's death but it just really rubs me the wrong way when some fans are so victim blamy and say that Ace got himself killed. okay yes he did put himself in harms way by giving in to Akainu's taunting of Whitebeard and had to save Luffy but I think the narrative makes it clear that he was doomed to death no matter what.
I just think it's very clear that the main reason the navy wanted to put Ace to death was first and foremost because he was Roger's son, not because of his own crimes of piracy. sure the Marines made a public show of it because they wanted to start a war with Whitebeard and executing his second division commander would provoke Whitebeard into waging that war. however, I think the navy would have had a public execution for any of the WB pirates that they could've gotten their hands on, it just happened to be Ace because of Blackbeard capturing him. remember, Blackbeard was originally planning on turning in Luffy to the Marines. him getting Ace instead is what instigated the Marines declaring war on Whitebeard.
the thing is, they would have executed Ace no matter what though, regardless of him being a Whitebeard pirate and regardless of him being a pirate at all. nothing would change the fact that Ace was the biological son of the Pirate King. the navy had been trying to kill Ace since before he was born. he was doomed from the start. the fact that they would have killed him as an infant should be enough to show that the Marines would have targeted Ace no matter what, so Akainu (or any Marine) killing him was basically inevitable. that doesn't say to me that Ace caused his own death.
there is nothing that Ace could or should have done - or shouldn't have done - that could have saved him. that's why I don't like when some fans say he died because of a "yo daddy joke." I just don't see it that way at all.
Ace's life was in danger the moment he was conceived just because of who had fathered him. he understandably resented that as it caused him a great deal of pain. he eventually found his true father in Whitebeard, who he loved and respected unconditionally and probably felt that love and respect back. however misguided, it's no wonder that he stopped and faced off against Akainu for insulting Whitebeard.
Ace famously never ran away from a fight, not just because he thought it was cowardly, but because he was worried he would leave something (someone) behind. then Akainu goes on to taunt Ace about WB retreating, essentially running away, and Ace might be projecting and think that Akainu is saying that Whitebeard is leaving him (Ace) behind. Ace can't retreat because that would be putting his loved ones in danger, so Whitebeard also can't retreat for the same reason in Ace's mind. and Akainu implying that WB would turn his back on his loved ones is what makes Ace stop and challenge him. at least that's how I interpret that interaction.
he died protecting Luffy and standing up for Whitebeard. he died protecting his brother and chosen father. protecting their life and reputation respectively. I think that's so tragic and beautiful and I think something is lost when it's joked about and sneered at as Ace just being a pig-headed idiot who couldn't take some taunting about his captain.
yes, in hindsight it was a dumb decision to stop and argue with Akainu on the battlefield as they were making their escape. I'm not saying he didn't make a fatal mistake. I just think too many fans take it at face value and see nothing more than Ace falling for a stupid taunt without unpacking why Ace did that. he's a flawed character and his flaws had consequences and repercussions but more importantly, when looking at it narratively, that flaw makes sense.

Luffy.
β’ She refers to him as 'the rubber kid'.
β’ Sees him as childish.
β’ Lux is a year older than Luffy so doesn't fully believe in his devil fruit's power and believes it to be exaggerated rumours.
β’ She has an avid dislike for his cheery attitude and thinks it will get him killed.
β’ Sees him as a younger version of her twin brother.
β’ Vows to capture him one day, but never will actually do so as much as she says so.
β’ Lux hates when Luffy refers to her as his friend as it risks her position in the marines.
β’ She's threatened to melt him into a rubber soup at least five times.
Nami.
β’ Lux sees Nami in the same way she views her girlfriend, a strong and dangerous woman.
β’ As much as she won't admit it, Lux has a slight crush on her.
β’ She would offer to cover Nami with her coat if she ever met her, Kholodian clothing standards show her style as provocative.
β’ When Lux's hair is not on fire, the two look identical minus eye colour.
Zoro.
β’ The two have had very brief encounters, mutual dislike of each other.
β’ Refers to him as 'plankton' as she views him as small and insignificant.
β’ She has listened to Tashigi rant about his swords too many times to not remember the blades. Though she struggles to pronounce the names of the three swords.
β’ She has a slight respect for him due to his connection to Mihawk, but that's as far as it goes.
β’ She'd like to invite him to spar with her one day.
Sanji.
β’ Lux finds him VERY irritating, but tolerates him.
β’ She has exploited his love for women in at least two fights.
β’ She would love to teach him some recipes from her homeland, Kholodon.
β’ Lux has admitted on one occasion that she would consider him were he not so perverted.
β’ She recognises his cooking ability and states that he might be better than most marine chefs.
Ussopp.
β’ She believes he is just a coward.
β’ Lux hates Ussopp greatly due to his habit of lying.
β’ While she dislikes him, she won't deny his ability to shoot, even putting it on the same level as her own second in command, Zotto.
β’ Lux doesn't understand why he's on the Straw Hat crew, but internalises the confusion.
Robin.
β’ Lux is terrified of Robin.
β’ She refers to her as 'the devil woman' and will not refer to her by her actual name.
β’ She knows Robin is wary of her, so keeps her distance.
β’ While they both have a mutual dislike, they can agree on intimidating Sanji when necessary.
β’ Lux does not like Robin due to the amount of paperwork she caused her when she was Miss Sunday.
Brook.
β’ Had it not been for Lux working under a living skeleton when she lived in Kholodon, she'd be surprised.
β’ She dislikes the amount of times he's asked to see her.. yeah.
β’ Lux has threatened to turn him into bonemeal on several occasions.
β’ Lux enjoys his music as it makes her feel less homesick.
Franky.
β’ Lux has had very few encounters with him, though she admits his shipwright abilities are incredible.
β’ She refers to him as 'that blue brute'.
β’ Lux has no general opinion on Franky, all she knows is he causes her paperwork which is mildly irritating.
Chopper.
β’ Lux is infatuated with Chopper since he reminds her most of her homeland.
β’ She has said his abilities are incredible and that she'd like to have him join the marines to work with him on several occasions.
β’ Lux often refers to him as 'Kholodian Puffball' though she knows he wouldn't understand the meaning behind the nickname.
Jimbei.
β’ He reminds her of her dad.
β’ She likes Jimbei a lot, viewing him as a familial figure.
β’ Lux is a little intimidated by him.
β’ She has a positive opinion, but isn't as keen since he was a warlord.
β’ Out of all the straw hats, she likes Jimbei the most.
β’ When tired, Lux will sit next to Jimbei and rest despite her night terrors.
β’ Lux is the closest with Jimbei out of all the warlords.
Does Lux ever feel angry at her shortness?
Very. Considering that an emperor is not only taller, but younger than her.
This luffy fit served so much cunt but unfortunately turned out to be ai art, but I couldn't let this design go to waste, so I redrew it with my own two hands.
