Get ready for the swaths of techbros and defenders of this game to brigade this post with goalpost moving statements and word games like “but was there ANY AI stuff in the game????huuuuhhhh??no? Then you’re wrong! Aren’t we so smart!”.
Seriously, everyone, I get some of us don’t like the current state of Pokémon, but you don’t need to support the ONE BAD OPTION out of several good alternatives to Pokémon! Try TemTem or Nexomon or ANYTHING! And if it’s not because of Pokémon, then why do y’all bring up Gamefreak in the first place?!?
In short? PLAY CASSETTE BEASTS OR SOMETHING! RANT OVER, WHERES THE TYLENOL!
Gonna say this as someone who has been critical of Game Freak both as a fan and as someone with a Pokémon SPIN for a while now:
Do not support Palworld.
The CEO of Pocket Pair, the game’s studio, openly supports AI and even made a game where making AI-generated art is its main mechanic.
Palworld is not Pocket Pair’s first instance of plagiarism, either. Their previous game, Craftopia, plagiarizes Breath of the Wild, whereas as its upcoming game, Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse, plagiarizes from independent developer Team Cherry’s game, Hollow Knight.
On top of stolen character models and concepts from fakemon artists, it’s already known that you can put Pals through what is basically slave labor BUT what’s been recently discovered is that the game allows you to capture and sell humans. This has been raising some red flags for black gamers looking into these mechanics, me included, considering this factors into the established slave labor system of Palworld.
TL;DR: I completely understand being tired of Game Freak and the Pokémon Company’s lack of polish over the years, but supporting something that is just as devoid of polish and even more devoid of ingenuity is not the way to make those criticisms clearer. This will only encourage more soullessness in the industry.
I implore you to support other creature collectors with some real passion behind them; I will reblog this post with recommendations shortly!
As you’ve probably seen in a recent reblog, I have a tendency to feel intense anger. I apologize if it’s put you off from this blog, but once again if you support the latest techbro shiny toy, you are not welcome here or on my goddamn planet, so kindly fuck off. Reasonable folk who don’t support the latest set of jingling keys, you are welcome here.
I’ll say this about the new Fallout show; it at least has allowed me to identify the absolute nutters in the community and provide a free block list for me. Seriously people, calm the fuck down…y’all are making me dislike New Vegas by association.
I hate what videogame discourse has become, because nowadays you have to specify that you don’t like a game for legit reasons, and not because of [insert progressive idea or marginalized group here], just so you don’t get lumped in with the Gamer crowd that likes to scream about basically everything nowadays.
On another note about gaming discourse: it’s always the same complaints about stuff that honestly make no sense. “Marvel dialogue” this, “Fortnite artstyle” that, “Oh it looks like a hero shooter” when no, it really doesn’t.
It’s enough to make me scream, and I’m pretty damn sure people do this because they saw their favorite reviewer say the same thing, and now they just parrot the arguments for most things, even when not applicable!
Sorry I had to get this off my chest. Rant over.
I’m gonna be honest, if someone uses the term “Marvel Dialogue/Writing” to criticize a game, or complain that something’s “Quippy” when there’s a similar property out there that uses similar dialogue and gets a pass, I’m gonna raise eyebrows and squint at your so-called “critique”.
(Seriously, these two “criticisms” have been feeling more and more dog whistle-y lately)
