The Snow Drop
The Princess Kiss

Heartbreaker Ring
Ever Never Ring
I guessed that the Ever Never Ring would be related to the twin School Masters by its name. Their story is ADORABLE.
Good point about age/maturity! (Though personally, I still see prequel Rafal's illustrations as looking younger than a man, sort of.)
When I read prequel Rafal and TLEA "Rafal" as the same person (before the Fall twist) I would rationalize his more poetic side as being an aspect that emerged because he was either in love or playing at being in love, more something situational rather than an inherent personality trait, as he never felt overt, romantic love in the prequels, meaning, he never had reason to express that side of himself. Yet, thinking about TLEA "Rafal" as Rhian does make that trait more congruent.
I also chalked up TLEA "Rafal"'s composure as being part of his situation rather than his actual self as Rhian, but being Rhian explains it too. The way I saw it was that prequel Rafal is tossed around like a punching bag and has a marked lack of control a lot of the time, as if he has chronic Protagonist Suffering Syndrome. Yet, TLEA "Rafal" has the upper hand practically the whole time, which distinguishes him as less high-strung than prequel Rafal because, in his perspective, he knows he'll win, nearly without a doubt.
I'd never consciously thought of that, but it's mainly true for me too! I mock prequel Rafal more than I ever have TLEA "Rafal."
I wonder how much of TLEA "Rafal" is filtered through Sophie's perspective or the tonal difference in the prequels and main series, and how much of him is simply just Rhian/divergent character development. Though, I'm skeptical as to whether the Fall identity twist had existed as a concept since TLEA's publication date (especially since Rise Rafal overall seems to be cut from the same cloth as TLEA "Rafal." Where else could prequel Rafal's characterization have been drawn from anyway?).
Good for Alma! Tearing down facades left and right.
Unpopular, possibly controversial opinion: "Rafal" in the main series is slightly more alluring to me than Rafal in the prequels. Sure, you could call him creepy, but he had a certain power and mystique about him that was distinct from the original's.
Sadly, I don't feel the same about Rafal in TLEA. He's a lot more brooding and moody compared to his scenes in the other books.
Allow me to remind you how weird and unhinged this man is:
"Ah, but there's only one way in this world to prove who you are." The Storian stopped its busy writing, sensing a pivotal moment. Slowly the School Master turned. For the first time, his blue eyes had a glint of danger. "What's the one thing Evil can never have . . . and the one thing Good can never do without?"
Absolute fucking creeper. You can imagine the sound he makes as he slowly turns around, like a creaking door. Gives me chills. I love him.
Also, he's rather funny:
The Storian plunged to the page: "Stupid girls! They were trapped for eternity!" "I suspected as much," said the School Master.
These two could've been a comedy duo. Too bad the Storian sucks.
Maybe it's also the way I'm writing him in Ever Never After. Kinda makes me wish I didn't have plans for him to revert to his original appearance permanently. I mean, it's a real fix-it fic.
I just...
MMMMMMMMmmmmysterious.
inspired by @pumpkinpaperweight 's critique of the SGE movie
A reimagining of how they could have done the Gavaldon scene in the movie
The scene starts with the two girls at the lake. Sophie is packing cucumbers and Agatha is flicking matches into the lake. The sun is setting behind them.
We had the Storian narrating in the beginning and we keep that, "In the village of Gavaldon two girls sat at a lake. One was good and one was evil." But we don't cut to close ups of the girls. Instead we get closer to the back of their heads and at "good" Agatha turns her head to say something we can't hear. Sophie turns and replies at "bad". The camera stills "The Schoolmasters perfect pair" and then we cut to in front of them and key into their conversation.
"Agatha you have to stop worrying."
"How can I when your still obsessed with that silly story about the School for Good and Evil?"
"It's not silly Aggie! Tonight we'll both go to our new schools. I'll meet my prince and you'll..."
"Be a witch." Agatha says spitefully aggressively tossing a match into the lake.
"Make new friends?" Sophie says haltingly.
"This is nonsense. Just don't do anything stupid."
"I won't."
"Promise?" There is a close up on Agatha's pinky. We cut to Sophie's face before back to Agatha' hand.
"Promise." They seal the pinky promise.
We then cut to Sophie going home, her father is already home, nailing something down. "Father must you ruin my window?"
Then they give a bit of exposition about the kidnapping and they talk about Belle (that girl from the beginning of the book who brings her dad lunch and cut her hair off) and the scene ends with Sophie sitting on her bed holding a fairytale frowning as her father nails her door shut, locking her in and hopefully the Schoolmaster out.
We cut to Agatha and her mother with a similar shot of Agatha frowning on her bed holding reaper but the repetitive noise that we hear isn't a hammer it's Callis dancing as she packs singing the SGE song she sang in the book. Agatha insults her, calls it hogwash. Calls admonishes her and then starts wondering about ingredients. Agatha sets Reaper off her lap and pulls her pillow over her head.
Camera moves downward into the darkness of underneath the bed and we see some books under Agathas bed to allude to the fact she reads the stories too. Maybe some more exposition about the bookshop and the connection between the books and the kids but this time narrated by the storian.
Then the camera pans up again and it's night Agatha is tossing and turning in her sleep before she jolts awake. She throws on her coat and the shot changes to her marching towards Sophie's house. Because I mentioned Sophie being shut in, only her window will be open, cause that's the only things she would be able to pull off since the door is boarded from the outside.
Instead of just standing outside the window for a bit the Schoolmaster will be immediately present, zooming past Agatha into Sophie's room and pulling Sophie out the window.
Then we have the chase scene through Gavaldon and Agatha latches onto Sophie's feet, claws her way up Sophie and starts trying to wail on the Schoolmaster to get him to let go. She stops when they lift off the ground so high that as Sophie's father tries to grab her out of the sky he can barely jump high enough to tap the edge of Agatha/Sophie's shoe (whichever is closer to the ground.
Instead of them bouncing up a tree Schoolmaster just drops them in the nest.
End of Gavaldon scene
Edit 1: Added-Maybe some more exposition about the bookshop and the connection between the books and the kids but this time narrated by the storian
how about you post your racism on your blog instead of leaving it in the comments of a drawing of agatha from the school of good and evil?
Hello dear, how about you message me without hiding yourself?
I've said it before and I'll say it again, that movie was crap and the person who chose the actors is definitely an idiot.
The whole thing belongs to a trash can because it ruined a brilliant book, but again this is just my opinion and I don't expect anyone to accept it or even care.
I'm not racist, I live in a place where no person of color lives in and I haven't had much interaction with them, therefor I literally don't care.
Go ahead and call me whatever you want. You are also free to block or report me, because as said above: I don't care.
So I’m adding The School for Good and Evil movie to the list of book to movie adaptations that I hope gets a good TV show after a mediocre movie
School for Good and Evil Movie Rant Notes
VERY SPOILER HEAVY
Good Things
Casting was good
Costumes were good
Sets were good
CGI was pretty good, for the wolves it was a little questionable but it could have been worse
Sophie and Agatha being childhood best friends was pretty good, made me like their friendship more
Sophie also being an outcast with Agatha was fine, it made more sense that Sophie wouldn’t want to go back if she literally had nothing good left there
Scene where Sophie was being dragged away by Schoolmaster was funny and true to books
Bad Things (in no particular order)
Gavaldon doesn’t know about SGE
WHY?!?!!?!?! Would have added so much more to story if Gavaldon knew about SGE
Would have shown how Sophie was only good bc she wanted to get into Good, not because she was actually good
Use of songs like Brutal by Olivia Rodrigo, you should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish, and a cover of Toxic by Britney Spears was very jarring and didn’t really suit film, except for maybe Bilie Eilish song
Lady Lesso is from Gavaldon (WHY) and her character has been merged with Evelyn Sader
There is no August Sader
There is no Professor Uma
Honora is a wicked stepmother instead of a genuinely nice woman
The whole beginning scene with the Schoolmasters, ruins mystery of which brother the Schoolmaster is because they basically say the Good brother won but then they’re like sike no you’re wrong here’s a flashback showing that the Evil brother sneak attacked him after we ended the scene. Would have added more to the movie if there was still the question of which brother was the Schoolmaster
Schoolmaster is not a mysterious figure, he doesn’t wear a mask and literally just shows up at the Welcoming
Wth was Dovey doing in the Groom Room
There is no Castor and Pollux
There is no Circus of Talents or real Trial by Tale. The Trial in the movie was a test for just Sophie and Tedros instead of a school wide event, not very interesting
Hester accepts a makeover from Sophie
Anadil wasn’t really anything
The fight scene between the Evers and Nevers was too long
Gregor
He was fine but unnecessary
It was very obvious that he was going to die from how hard they tried to get us to like him
Honestly thought he was Tristan because he had red hair
They tell you that failing is basically the same as being ranked Mogrif in the books, you turn into an animal or an object. There is no more mystery of what happens to students when they fail, which ruins Agatha’s scene in the Circus of Talents, so it’s probably good that the Circus doesn’t exist in the movie at all
There is no ranking system in the movie. Unless you fail you’re all main characters.
Tedros killing Gregor. Seeing Tedros kill a character that was Agatha’s friend and who they tried to get us to like does not help us like Tedros, who is meant to be Agatha’s love interest
The blood magic thing was stupid, it seems like the blood magic was what was corrupting Sophie instead of her just being Evil
Also the blood magic CGI was very weird
Also why does blood magic have to corrupt, why can’t they do bad things just because they’re bad people
They really downplayed Sophie’s selfishness and vanity
There is no Agatha makeover scene where she discovers self confidence. Very important scene in book and fan favourite moment
Agatha doesn’t really have any character development
Agatha and Sophie don’t teleport back to Gavaldon after they kiss. A portal appears and they have the choice to walk through it. This completely ruins the setup and motivation for the second movie
Sophie says that Agatha can stay with Tedros and that she’ll go back on her own. Completely contradicts Sophie’s character that she’ll be okay with going back to a town that she hates and that hates her without her only friend
Agatha chooses to go back to Gavaldon with Sophie, literally kisses Tedros goodbye and says that she hopes they’ll meet again someday. Again, completely ruins setup and motivations for second movie
Tedros has lots of time to stop Agatha from going, they take a long time to walk to the portal and he could have jumped into the portal and then they tease a second movie, which has been completely ruined already because of the previous two points
That archery scene where Tedros says that only pure of heart people can shoot an arrow straight. So Agatha helps Sophie shoot an arrow straight and that somehow proves to Tedros that Sophie is good. What
After Rafal and Sophie kiss the schools collapse with the students inside, after Rafal stabs Sophie with the pen the castle literally rebuilds itself and somehow no one died when the castle was collapsing
Also Rafal’s motivation was not to have Evil win, it was to destroy both of the schools, including the Evil one, and rule the world
Dovey was not as cool as Book Dovey, she was closer to Uma, who was a fine character but Book Dovey was cooler
During the scene when the Nevers are showing their talents and Hester has her demon attack Sophie, Sophie literally calls out for help through a closed window, instead of singing/whistling (I don’t remember which) for help like in the book, which showed that when she tried to do something that a Good person does something Evil happens instead
Also the bees were Rafal
There was no Golden Goose scene
Wtf was up with Yuba
When the Evers turned into Nevers after attacking the only thing that changed was that their uniforms turned black and Tedros got some red scratches on his face that you could barely see
Hester’s dress when she turned into an Ever was horrendous
There’s a scene in the Welcoming where a Never boy tries to attack Tedros and ends up chopping off his own arm and I thought that was unnecessary
There’s no scene with the Manwolf in the Doom Room which was in integral scene to Sophie’s character.
During the Trial Agatha uses Tedros’ shield as a sled to slide to Tedros and give him his sword. I thought that was stupid
There’s no barrier between the schools, no scenes where Agatha outsmarted her reflection. Students can just walk to and from the schools freely
Sophie and Agatha just walked up some magic stairs to get to the Schoolmasters tower
The Ever girls say that they don’t want to room with Agatha, and then the next morning when Agatha gets booted from the Schoolmasters tower and wakes up in her bed, the Ever girls are in the room waking up and say good morning to her like the didn’t literally just say that they didn’t want to room with her
I thought the “normal girl” thing that Agatha was saying at the Welcoming was a bit forced and awkward to watch
Lady Lesso said that she would help Rafal get Sophie or whatever and then didn’t really do anything else with that besides cut her hair, seemed unnecessary to have her say that and then not do anything with it
When Sophie grew a wart it looked more like a pimple
“Do I look like I give a shit about smiling” yeah it kinda seemed like you did when you failed Agatha
Hort’s dad was not Captain Hook in the books, he was a member of Captain Hooks crew
That scene where they teased a HortxBeatrix made me almost scream, thank God Hort rejected her
