predictions now that the trailer is out:
the intro makes it look like they go back to sonic's old cave for something. i wonder what it is
they jump out of a plane too. we NEED a "no food or movies" quip
when shadow says "you're a colorful bunch" he seems... confused? like he's not sure what's going on. makes me remember he probably hasnt seen another mobian before AND he has no context as to who these people who look like him are
sonic's getting lied to about what happened on the ark, or just straight-up not told until late in the movie
and dont worry guys we know they're pulling SOMETHING. we see a shot of shadow and gerald over maria's body while soldiers point guns at them so yeah i think the us military still killed her
the chao garden in tokyo seems like a cute ref to there being an actual irl chao garden in japan in sonic x
tom and/or maddie knocked out of commission, which causes sonic to go against GUN and get robotnik. in all the scenes with robotnik/stone there's NO implication that GUN let sonic do this and considering the robotnik family history with the ark....
iirc we saw "i found you faker" on a leaked merch package so let's get that entire scene pls

as i said in another post, they have jessica mcfucking jones in this movie and her character got ZERO screentime in the trailer and only ONE promo image with her in it. which implies she may be doing something spoilery. like idk being an undercover nocturnal flying mammal
in relation: shadow's either working with GUN traitors or the "gerald" figure. we see missiles heading for team sonic's meeting with the commander, so it's not GUN sending the missiles and robotnik's out of commission soooo where else would shadow get those bombs

also guys he's not robotnik's dad instead of grandpa in this. he calls him "pop pop" that's something people call their grandpas
IF gerald is alive and not an illusion/ai/whatever he's been alone for 50 years and is gonna be sooo sane about it. but we DO know there's a 50yr timeskip considering the last credits scene so it'd be very strange for him to uhhh still be kickin

OK Guys. I get the skepticism esp after the Knuckles disaster, but we also need to keep in mind "this is a trailer that won't spoil literally everything about the movie." ESPECIALLY in regards to GUN. They're not gonna put in the trailer "the military shot a little girl and that's why Shadow is mad so Sonic is going to never work with them ever." That's a great way to get parents to bring their kids to the theater, especially in America. (/s)
It's WAY more effective as a plot twist halfway through, where Sonic thinks that he's finally being accepted onto Earth via working with the government only to find out that they're exploiting him and Shadow the same. I can't guarantee this is gonna happen obviously but it's like a 90% chance just knowing how, like. writing works.
Esp considering the government has not had a good track record in the last two movies, I dunno if they'd do a heel-face turn into "actually they were always right" in the movie where a little girl needs to get shot by the government.
And I'm not gonna say "trust and form a parasocial relationship with a film director" but we should keep in mind that Jeff Fowler got his start working on Shadow's title game and has stated in interviews that he understands how important Shadow's backstory is to his character. Not to mention how the internet has been exploding the last two years with enthusiasm over this story actually getting shown onscreen, enough that a studio would fucking notice at the very least that this is what the people want. I can't guarantee they'll actually listen, but saying that they're absolutely not because "Sonic was in a GUN helicopter in the trailer" is insane. Especially with the fact that GUN is not with Sonic when he goes to Eggman. We just see Team Sonic alone meeting with Stone, and I will bet you it's because there's no way in hell GUN would let them near him, what with the Robotnik connections to the ARK.
Also the Gerald thing is rather worrying, esp with the lack of shit they gave Pachacamac in the miniseries, but honestly I think that was just a marketing push of "Jim Carrey will be playing TWO characters!!!" Considering he's only seen in one trailer scene AT the ARK (where all of Gerald's technology was and, more importantly, where the Eclipse cannon he needs someone to set off is) AND we know from movie 2's credits scene that there was a fifty-year timeskip, I severely doubt that's the real Gerald who's just completely unaffected by his granddaughter being murdered.
And ofc there's things to be concerned about in the trailer. The lack of Rouge for instance– I obviously keep posting my theory that Krysten Ritter's character will be her undercover but the fact we don't know how much time she'd actually have with Shadow, if at ALL, is worrying. The fact that Rouge might not be here period. The weird pacing of the Knuckles show and the fear that could bleed over into the movie. But there's also stuff to get excited about– the epic fight scene choreography, the brief glimpse we got of Maria and Shadow's bond. Reeves's voice actually fits Shadow and at least from what the trailer showed us it looks like the Green Hills storyline is taking a backseat to the action and mystery of Project Shadow.
tl;dr guys calm down for like five minutes. if the movie sucks in december we can riot then. right now let's just band together against mufasa
I really enjoyed your analysis of the interaction. I didn't think of it like that! I just hope that Stone is as welcoming with Shadow as he was with Knuckles, considering the last 'space creature' he welcomed became friends with the hedgehog (I mean I hope Shadow does the same but-) and if he's gonna be the next big bad he maybe a little more sinister and angry as Eggman could be dead (if Mr Carrey does retire) and he could not be as warm as we know him.
i do think about ‘...could use some mushroom’ a lot it felt like a punch to the gut watching it bc you know me i love it when they are in love but stone looked so sad :(. but like. i will never give up hope. Ever. it’s not about stone in the grand scheme of things of that moment i think. i feel like it represents robotnik crossing that Otherwordly threshold a lot bc like. robotnik’s well-dressed very-human agent stone giving him a latte REEKS of sonic movie 1 vibes yknow? back when he was still A Guy Who Was Slightly Power Crazed. that one moment was definitely like. robotnik returning to something he once knew as his routine only to find he no longer conforms to it. also the guys taste buds are ruined with shrooms i feel like it wasn’t a jab at stone at ALL just like. a non sequitur. even if stone was a meow meow about it. also the wording of ‘could use’ some mushroom like... for robotnik that’s oddly gentle yknow. it’s so neutral it’s just a statement. wow. and i guess we also see stone processing how things are going to be different forever now with how he tried to hide it with ‘you look... different’ but like when Their Special Latte isn’t His Order anymore. that’s a sure sign. and that’s followed immediately by stone going ‘is that a fucking echidna’ but... his smile when he says ‘welcome to the team’. that’s a man who is ready to look to the future. a man who goes from :( to delightfully advocating for revenge on the hedgehog. fuck it this is my life now!
anyways. that little exchange doesn’t sto my botniks very much but the more i think about it the more it feels a lot less like a sting to me LOL on my first watch i was just terrified that would be the beginning of the end. but then the scene where robotnik giggles and stoops to stones level like an excited schoolboy to go ‘that means he trusts you, stone!’ makes it better. it heals me. silly goofy fun
