Supernatural Doesnt So Much Have Good Ideas As It Trips And Stumbles Into The Occasional Earth Shattering Concept. - Tumblr Posts
An interesting fallback that the supernatural writers like to use is the "Oh they were siblings" which could be lazy but is also kind of interesting because it unintentionally creates family units that the writers are never interested in exploring but are endlessly fascinating.
And it also creates a situation were Chuck (the in universe writer of almost everything) himself as a twin has never actually been alone, he came into existence and there was already someone else there. He doesn't really understand what it means to be one of a kind in the way something like Jack as the only archnepilm in existence would and you can see it in his work, with everything he creates there is always an accompaniment. Always a sibling. Always part of a set.
They touched on it briefly with the every set of siblings is just a mirror of Chuck and Amara thing. But it’s really interesting to think about because every story Chuck writes seems to be about two siblings and betrayal. Michael and Lucifer his eldest boys locked in an endless finger pointing match of who betrayed who first, destined for one to eventually kill the other, their relationship is practically unmendable but it is undeniable that love was there and in some ways it still is, but it is not enough to save them from their faith. Cain and Abel the first human brothers whose betrayal both stemmed from love but ultimately ended the same. And there’s something to be said about it always being the older sibling doing the killing.
Chuck many different ways through many different siblings plays out his relationship with his own sister. His most dearest twin, who betrayed him by continuously destroying the things he loved and who he is scared to admit he betrayed by locking her away. He writes these stories as if he is trying to understand, trying to convince himself that there was no other way that their story could have ended. And so it is endlessly fascinating that his most favorite story is one about the Winchester brothers. Sam and Dean who despite many perceived betrayals always seem to find their own way back to each other.
And as he watched their story unfold he had to grapple with the fact that maybe that is what siblinghood is. Maybe there is away to co-exist with the being you literally came into existence with. Maybe there will be betrayal but there can also be forgiveness. And that is endlessly fascinating
But that’s just the good supernatural that exists in my head.
The thing is that Dean and his abandonment issues wants Castiel to stay, despite the fuck ups and the blame and the anger, he needs him to stay as proof that he’s not toxic that he can have good things and not break them
But Castiel, and his guilt chose to leave because that is his penance. Why does he deserve to be happy when he has caused so much suffering? How can he look at Dean smile at him when he’s fucked up so much? He needs to leave because how could he be around Dean like he isn’t a living monument to all the ways his fuck ups hurt the ones he loves.
Cas wants to help the brothers, so he leaves. He’s caused them so much pain what right does he have to be around them, when he can be out there getting them information, finding things they need, helping fix their problems. This is his penance. Because no matter how hard he rebelled or how far he fell Castiel has an innate, almost primal need to be holy, to be absolved of his mistakes and sins. And he’s made so many mistakes where else can he find penance but in misery?
And in almost every episode Dean is in some way or form asking Castiel if he'll stay this time, and every-time Cas says no. And Dean can be mean, he’s s a deeply angry man, and so every no seems like proof that he’s pushed him to far that this is it this is when Cas says he's had enough. He's not gonna stay and be screamed or laughed at anymore. Dean’s finally succeeded in driving him away as he does anyone that’s ever given a damn about him. That this is proof of how toxic he is; after all Castiel is a creature with wings, all he wants to do is fly, and here Dean is trying to keep him in a cage.
The more Cas leaves on his own, the more Dean feels the need to give him a reason too.
The ways in which we punish ourselves; depriving ourselves of the ways in which we love.
The narrative’s doomed them from the start.
You know what? the best supernatural spin off would have nothing to do with the Winchesters and instead would be about Samuel motherfucking Colt because dude absolutely had something going on. And was tripping absolute balls all the fucking time
Dude not only builds a literal kills almost all gun (that no one knows how it works exactly), he also built a fucking devil’s gate and the series of railroad tracks that formed a giant devils trap in the middle of fucking nowhere Wyoming that was somehow also a great fucking hotspot to talk with Lucifer in the cage. Why the fuck would he build a devil’s gate and then the devil trap protecting it? Why could this dude not be normal? Not to mention He also fought a Phoenix!!! A Phoenix! The only Phoenix that has ever been reported to exist and whose ashes are the only thing that can kill the literal mother of all monsters. Which he somehow mails to Sam and Dean in the future using a phone from several years in the future that he literally just got earlier that afternoon.
Dude was on some serious shit. Man was definitely receiving the most violently random prophetic visions from god. Dude literally went, it came to me in a dream and built a weapon that’s literally still confounding people generations later and would function as a key to a fucking devils gate that would literally be the first step in so much shit going down in so little time generations later . Wouldn’t have even surprised me if they also said he was responsible for Ruby’s knife.
He also, most importantly, is from the wild wild fucking west!!! How cool would a show about that be? A fucking genius inventor hunts monsters in the Wild West while some being he knows nothing about but deeply suspects is giving him blueprints for big, wild things and weapons for how to stop them, or at least slow them down.
