Spy x Family Character Tracker

I'm finally ready to unveil the super nerdy project I've been working on for the past month or so: the Spy x Family Character Tracker!

As for what this project is about, I'm using a Google Sheet to track the prevalence of each character in the Spy x Family manga. I do this by giving 1-3 points to each character based on how often and significantly they appear in each manga chapter. Basically, the more often a character appears, the more points they will get. You can check the actual Google Sheet (link below) for more details. And don't forget to read the "About" tab to understand how everything is calculated!

Not sure how many other people would be interested in this, but I thought it would be a cool thing to track as the series progresses. Obviously Loid, Anya, and Yor will always be top three, but I'm curious how the other characters' prevalence will play out, especially characters who haven't appeared much yet but seem significant, like Melinda and Shopkeeper.

Some interesting notes:

-When I started working on the project, Loid and Anya were constantly vying for 1st place, but Loid was usually just a bit ahead...until the bus hijacking arc when Anya overtook him, which was helped further by the recent Eden end of term arc.

-Even though Yor has fewer points than Loid, she currently has more 3 point chapters than him.

-Damian currently holds 1st place for most prevalent side character (also helped by the hijacking and end of term arcs). Bond would probably be 4th place overall if he had dialogue.

-I can't believe Ewen and Emile have more points than Franky! But it's mostly due to them appearing in pretty much every Eden chapter, though they usually only get 1 point for those. Franky may have less points, but he has more 3 point chapters!

Just like my story guide project, I'll be updating this Google Sheet every time there's a new chapter. Thankfully I've set it up so most of it will automatically update. I just have to input the characters and points for the new chapter.

Going by the official preview, I knew we were going to get a short mission involving Anya and Becky at the movies, but I was pleasantly surprised that Yor ended up joining them 😃 (along with Martha)

I had a feeling it would be the same movie Franky saw in the previous chapter! There certainly was a lot of kissing 😅

I like the little detail that Martha wears glasses when watching movies.

When Anya thinks of what movie they're going to see, in the Japanese version she mistakenly says ぎょじら ("Gyojira") instead of ゴジラ ("Godzilla.") One of the readings for ぎょ("Gyo") is 魚 (fish). So that's why it's a fish monster 😂

This scene was just so Anya. Never change, girl.

Another fun tidbit I just now noticed is that Becky calls Yor 師匠 ("shisho") which means "master/teacher" in a trainer to trainee relationship.

Poor Becky being surround by only abnormal women and unable to have the typical girlie talk she craves, lol.

But that's also what I like about Becky - she's still a good friend to Anya despite their differences in taste on...everything, lol. And even though Yor and Martha aren't like the women she idolizes in the movies and shows she enjoys, she can see their good qualities and still respects them.

I also love how both Martha and Yor are clueless about romance, for different reasons.

Yor is extremely inexperienced and flustered when it comes to romance, while Martha did try to pursue it, only for it to end in tragedy. My little headcanon is that, towards the end of the series, where Yor is struggling to decide whether to stay with the Forgers or not (either due to an identity reveal or some other reason), Martha is able to give her a "pep-talk"...convince her to follow her true feelings and find the romantic happiness that Martha herself wasn't able to attain in her generation ❤️

Twilight be like: "She's only legally my wife. You know that fake marriage trope? Well, we're actually married for real, but like the relationship isn't real, so I'd only protect my wife and daughter with my life...for the mission, of course." FoR tHe MiSsIoN

Spy x Family's Secret Story

A few days ago, I learned something interesting at school: some stories have secret stories.

Hopefully, I can explain it: a secret story is what is not told explicitly in the narrative, but that the reader can understand by the character's behavior, thoughts or actions.

The most interesting part is that this secret story is, in many cases, what pushes the main story forward.

So, of course, I had to apply this to my sxf brainrot 😏 It took me a while to figure it out, but I think I got it...

It's one of the most celebrated panels in the manga. We finally got to see Twilight shirtless 😎 and we've enjoyed countless fanarts of it (thanks to all the wonderful artists 👏) Well, it was precisely this panel and the timing of it what made me realize about Spy x family's secret story.

This is the first time we see Twilight naked, right? This was also the first time he realized he was vulnerable.

Here, Twilight, master of disguise, best spy of Westalis, rips his disguise, admits that he has weaknesses and shows us that he's injured because of this vulnerability.

Think about the symbolism of it; a person is at their most vulnerable when naked and we didn't see him in this state until he had that conversation with Yor. Even though the arc was about catching Wheeler, the secret story of that arc was about weakness. Wheeler himself mentioned it several times and it's not a coincidence that in this arc Twilight shows weakness not once, but three times:

1. By not killing Yuri (and getting shot)

2.By getting hurt during the confrontation with Wheeler and lastly...

3.When he sees Yor again!

It's also not a coincidence that he got physically hurt because he showed weakness. I suspect it won't be the last time this happens. Keep that in mind for the future...

All this is related to that secret story l mentioned at the beginning. I think SxF secret story is precisely that, not weakness, but vulnerability.

That conversation he had with Yor was about that; she was trying to convince him to be vulnerable with her (more on that here). And his thoughts were about that too; he's telling Yor in his mind he lives in a world where he cannot be vulnerable.

And that last line!!

It's exactly what secret stories are about: unsaid things.

The fact that an arc about weakness and vulnerability started and ended with Yor and where Twilight acknowledged his weakness is very significant. Do you see it too? All this happened because of her and I think he knows it too.

Twilight's struggle with vulnerability is what pushes the story forward and ultimately what makes so many of us connect with the characters. Clearly, he's losing the battle with himself and he's trusting and relying on his wife more every day; we see it in his behavior. We all want that to happen too!

Because, what is more human than to become vulnerable because of love?

I'm going to be honest I hope they get together for real at around the 400th chapter, depending on the development we get.

Some great arcs that don't have romance as the main thing going on take multiple chapters, and while that doesn't mean there isn't room for some development to happen in the background or something, I just feel there needs to be time and for everything to develop naturally to the point where Yor and Twilight do love each other and want to marry each other for real.

I'm going to stop for now before I over explain myself and ramble on about stuff you probably already feel too and just hope I was understood correctly. Sometimes I make myself sound confusing.

Spy x Family Mission 57 (Abridged Recap)

Guess whose back, the kids are back, back at Eden that is. It seems today Anya's getting a lesson on lying and we see more details on Anya's other classmates rather than faceless characters.

The midterm break is over and as usual, the popularity contest begins on who had the coolest vacation to brag about, and of course, Anya takes this opportunity to tell her tales of the assassin convention aboard Princess Laura Bly Lorelei.

She starts off well, gets into the groove telling tales of infamous villains, and foreign passengers, but spirals the tall tale into pirates, circus performers, and octopeople.

While it seems that Anya has a knack for storytelling (future writer in the making) her fifteen seconds of fame is over and Becky takes over with her star-studded meetings.

Well at least some admire? her tack for storytelling at least.

Back at home, Anya is defeated and the only people she can ask for advice are the three adults who make their living as skilled liars, ougufh talk about a dilemma.

Luckily Anya is an esper and gets the gist of their collective mindset on the morals of lying.

Aww, look at the delicious snacks and drinks and Anya's tiny cup.

Anyway, it was a short chapter, but Endo is in preparation for Jumpfest so it's understandable, well that's it for today, see you all next time.

I literally love how in this arc she isn’t portrayed as this dumb brute of a woman who is supposed to be a super secret high level assassin (I know I’m over exaggerating a bit and this is a comedy story but still). Here she actually a well written character, as well as her arc and it actually feels like she is this high level deadly assassin (with a brain) that has found a solid reason to continue being in this assassin job and doing what she believes is right.

I love the Forger family so much but I had felt Yor was a kind of a weak link for me and hadn’t really been done justice with what she could have been and hadn’t really made sense how she could have continued being a super secret deadly assassin doing what she believes is right and have someone fall in love with her when she was portrayed as being dumb as a brick.

I know I sound harsh and I am being slightly harsher with my criticism than with how I really feel about her but I’m trying to get my point across.

Yor is questioning why she is continuing her job as assassin and it happened bc she has a family now 🥺🥺 she started it for her family and now thinking about not continuing since it can take her family away from her 🥺🥺 she is so full of love 💖

It’s a wonder none of the Forgers have figured out each other’s secret identities. Loid looks at Yor is and is like, "ah, yes, makes sense that this civil servant can kick ass and leap across the city to bash a purse snatcher ". And Yor is like, “hm, yes, a psychiatrist who beats up his 'patients' . understandable, have a nice day”.

I am really hoping that Yor is able to befriend Melinda and the rest of the Lady Patriots since Yor needs more friends. I don't count her catty coworkers. I do wonder what if this encounter goes south and actually puts more pressure on Loid and Anya. Melinda probably knows about Anya punching Damian and she might hold a grudge. Or maybe she heard of Loid approaching Donovan and that raised some red flags. I am sure Yor would offer a heartfelt apology since she blames herself for teaching Anya. While I hope that Yor can win Melinda over, it would be dramatic if things didn't go well (because the Forgers are an infamous family.)

I completely agree with you and it matches with how I characterize Yor (as well as how I hope Endo had meant to characterize her as well).

That was why even thought I loved her character I found her to be the weakest developed out of the 3 main characters. [I’m not trying to spoil] Initially reading the manga lead me to have higher hopes/expectations for Yor that just barely were revealed/developed since she a had few moments of focus and the rest of was more subtle/in the background. I was really happy when I got to the huge Yor focused arc and it developed her and a lot of other characters wonderfully as well as wonderfully answered a huge question I had about something that I had trouble coming with a satisfying answer for.

I loved that arc so much.

tbh I think Yor is really smart, she just never received a formal education so she *seems* ditzy and probably feels like she’s way out of her depth and that’s just — :(

Completely agree, Endo even stated why twilight couldn’t do the teary reunion with his daughter right then and there.

i’m shocked to see the disappointment surrounding twilight’s decision to stay in disguise rather than run to anya. like how are you not floored by how far he has come as not only a character but a father?

twilight abandoned his mission the second that he heard anya was in trouble. we know this because sylvia said in the beginning that he wouldn’t make it in time to help, so there was no point in sending him back (and, just to clarify, she was right!) but instead of agreeing with her call and carrying out the remainder of his task he ran to help his daughter AND brought backup. not because he wanted to save a group of kids, but because he wanted to save ANYA.

twilight rushed home only to find out he wasn’t needed. TWILIGHT, the top spy in WISE, was not integral to saving the day. can you imagine what that feels like for him? don’t you think he recognizes how that might make him look to wise? and then to see anya immediately jump into yor’s arms… well, he likely assumed he wasn’t needed there either. so he decided to make her favorite meal for dinner, because he grew up with no promise of food or shelter to make his emotional trauma a little easier. and, for the record, when anya heard his plan she immediately lit up! she wasn’t expecting a grand show of physical affection, she understood how much it meant for twilight to be there to look out for her in the first place!

a spy should never get attached, and here he is. caring so openly for his daughter that he did something he NEVER would have done prior to meeting anya. and btw, we didn’t get any insight into twilight’s emotions surrounding anya’s kidnapping. there’s no reason to believe that he wasnt as emotionally affected as yor just because he didn’t hug her the same way. yeah, i get that it might be a little disappointing to be 75 chapters into the manga and not have that one moment where everything clicks into place for him and he finally understands her role in his life. but it’s just not realistic to the progression of his character. twilight is a lonely, emotionally stunted man whose life has centered around violence since his childhood. you can’t expect him to outgrow that in the span of like six months with anya and yor.

My maybe unpopular opinion is that Damian and Anyas dynamic shouldn't change in significant ways until Anya actually views Damian as a genuine friend and not a shiny prize. Because at this point her motivation isn't exactly better than all the other girls' and Damian can probably sense that, it's just that he can't figure out her why.

This post is based on a pretty interesting discussion in a DA server I'm in where some fellow fans have criticized Endo's writing, mainly because there wasn't as much impact after the bus arc as people expected (which is ofc valid crit). I just want to share what I wrote:

Late to the whole convo, but I lightly disagree that the da dynamic didn't change *at all*, however it does seem as though there wasn't as much impact from the bus arc as hoped. However, we did get some subtle shifts that should be noteworthy, namely Damian actually getting jealous and shivering at the mere *thought* of Anya getting "stolen" from him. This has never happened prior to the bus arc and is now a recurring development. That and Becky now teasing Damian in addition to cheering on Anya, especially when comparing her very open hostility towards him earlier in the story. Not only is she friendly to him now, it seems like she has seen through his crush too. I don't think that Endo will change the dynamics too much anytime soon, especially because of how little time has passed in the sxf universe. Keep in mind that damian doesn't really have a proper role model who actively helps him unlearn the toxic mindset he quite literally grew up with; the closest he'd get is his mother wishing for him to be friends with Anya too, but that is only something he heard from Jeeves and not Melinda herself. But he definitely was reflecting on that in the cake chapter. I also think that Damian is in his "I'm too grown-up for this kiddie shit" phase, he probably thinks he's better than *everyone else*, not just Anya (like him scoffing at Bill). He really doesn't want to dance with anyone and is just annoyed with all this attention imo. But he's also jealous and doesn't want Anya to dance with anyone else, but ofc won't actually admit that because he's a brat. He's just a kid with many Big Feelings™ going on that he doesn't understand and doesn't even get the privacy to unpack, so ofc he's lashing out and acting even worse than usual. I wouldn't be surprised if he just runs away in the next chapter because he's just so fed up with everything and everyone. I feel like us fans keep forgetting that Damians boundaries are straight up being pushed if not disrespected, he's been saying multiple times that he doesn't want to dance and literally everyone is ignoring him as a person with feelings (except his friends who probs set the competition up in order to reject everyone on his behalf) Nobody but his two best friends actually care about his feelings on this whole matter, he's just a shiny prize to everyone else *including* Anya.

Anyway I think Endo is saving the big dynamic change for something far more significant such as the telepathy reveal 👀
