The Trouble with Lunarre (Tales of Zestiria X)

[WARNING - MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ZESTIRIA GAME AND ANIME!]

Now, I’m probably going to regret watching the Zestiria anime before I finished the game - but sod it. That aside, I count myself a fan of the fox maniac. His unique, striking design and personality make it a great shame that in both the game and anime he is such a non-presence the majority of the time. 

It’s even more pronounced in the anime, for despite showing up more often, Lunarre’s contribution to the plot, themes and characters of Zestiria is … lacking. Many have pointed out in reviews how confused they were by the fox hellion’s continued presence in a story despite having no clear or meaningful reason to still be in it.

So without further ado, I’m going to write a lot a bit about Lunarre’s anime portrayal, the directions it seemed to be going, where it fell short, and what could have been. Because I’m a nerd and this is what I do.

Tales of Flash Kick

Seems to me that Ufotable clean forgot or don’t care at this point, because I think it’s clear they meant Lunarre to be dead. They took the trouble to show him in his human form, but once he turned into a hellion forgot he was supposed to turn back on death/defeat. It’s like they forgot his hellion form wasn’t his human form. 

I wondered if Ufotable might have been trying to show an alternative destiny for hellions - hellions who rediscover their humanity on their own without the need of purification. But nobody commented on it in the series, nobody seemed the least fazed that Lunarre was, well, still a hellion. They didn’t know what had happened, or why, and Lunarre’s role in the plot is so vague and confused the audience never got a chance to find out either.

They cared so little about Lunarre and the other side characters anyway. Hell, even some of the mains got the shaft. That’s how it appeared to me anyway.

You know the writing is bad when you’re in the second and last season of an anime and neither the character NOR the audience can answer this question to any meaningful degree. You know, beyond ‘that fox guy’. Even worse, we still don’t know when it’s finished!

Lunarre: Don't know!

Dezel: Just say you want to get into Princess Alisha's pants, we'll take anything at this point.

Can we all just appreciate Lunarre’s hair? Forget Lailah or Zaveid, that mane has got to be an absolute bitch to take care of.

Also Lunarre has the best hair in the Zestiria series and I will fight anyone who naysays it. I may be underweight and skinny and there’s probably an ocean separating me from most of the fandom, but I will fight you.
