Kaz values his independence, the walls he built between himself and the rest of the world, above many things - almost above all else. But to Inej he says that he`ll throw all his plans, goals and schemes to the wind - for her. He says 'We', he says 'Together'. The wolf is not so lone after all, right, Mr. Brekker? Well, the crow is certainly not. To admit he`s not all about 'each man for himself' to Inej is not a burden after all - because he loves her.

For Nina Matthias opens his mind and leaves behind his occupation that he committed himself to. For him any oath is not easily given - and eveh harder broken. But Nina - and his feelings for her - help him to see the error of his ways and bring forth the best part of him. That`s why he readily gives her what is most precious to him - his faith, his loyalty, to the end of his days (screw you, CK Chapter 40). And it is not a loss for him - because he loves her.

Jesper is a free bird - always on the move, never resting, taking risks, cherishing the danger. Yet he commits himself to Wylan - to keep his secret, to help him guard it, to know that Wylan depends on him. Jesper`s willing to tame his restlessness, to delve into himself in search of qualities he didn`t even think he possessed - for Wylan. And it`s not a hardship - because he loves him.
Kaz, Matthias and Jesper all make a sacrifice by giving up something essential for their loved ones` sake. And that`s the best kind of sacrifice - because in making it they overcome their own pain, prejudice, vices and weaknesses. By parting with something they hold very important they become greater not lesser, stronger not weaker.
Also: I just love how Kaz`s pledge is the longest and Jesper`s is the shortest. Breaking some stereotypes here:)
