Cinematic Parallels
“The Shining” (1980)
“The Fall of the House of Usher” (2023)

— Some places are like people: some shine and some don't. THE SHINING, dir. Stanley Kubrick
Just watched the shining for the first time.
Ultimately, the movie was not about the Torrance family but Dick Halloran.
The movie opens with the Torrance family and closes with them. Basically, they are informed of the hotel's history, move in, demonstrate their shared helplessness and experience increasing tension until finally Jack snaps in the movie's climax. There appears to be no concrete beginning, middle or end. Now add in Dick. He appears in the beginning, meeting the Torrances and fellow psychic Danny. The pair bond over ice cream, and Dick mentions in passing that seeing the future is part of his gift. This implies that he may know what is to come. Later, we see that he has gone to Miami, and we observe his quiet, lonely life with an odd sense of foreboding. We them see him receive a vision, likely from Danny. This serves as a sort of catalyst for the climax, during which Dick drops everything to save the Torrances. His own brutal murder saves young Danny, securing the legacy of childless Dick and wrapping up the movie. All in all, Dick had only a few minutes of screen time, but it is his actions that formed a true storyline. His learning the Torrances' fate, deciding to save them and ultimately dying for them served as the movie's three acts. In the end, he was the hero.
