Mind reeling, Y/N stumbled to her feet, mumbling an excuse about needing some air before racing out of the shrine. She collapsed on a bench in the gardens, breathing heavily as she tried to process the revelation.
Mikey found her there a short while later, brow furrowed in concern. "What's wrong? Why'd you run out like that?"
"I'm fine," Y/N said quickly, trying to gather her scattered thoughts. "It's just... Mikey, have you ever drawn on yourself?"
He looked taken aback by the question. "What? No, I... Wait." His eyes widened with dawning realization. Slowly, he pushed his sleeves up again, staring at the inky doodles in shock. "What the hell? Where did these come from? I didn't..."
"I drew them," Y/N whispered, holding out her own identically marked arm with a shaking hand. "Mikey... I think we might be soulmates."
Mikey gaped at her, eyes flickering between her face and arm in disbelief. "Soulmates? Us? But we've known each other forever... How..."
"I don't know," Y/N replied helplessly. "I had no idea either. Not until I saw your arm just now."
There was a tense, charged silence as they both grappled with this life-altering realization. Then Mikey took a step closer, gently grasping Y/N's marked forearm. His calloused thumb tenderly brushed over her inked skin.
"I've been trying to ignore it," he said quietly, eyes boring into hers with startling intensity. "This thing between us. I thought it was just me, that I was imagining it. I didn't want to ruin our friendship. But this..." He traced the swirling lines reverently. "This means something."
Y/N's heart pounded at his confession, barely daring to believe what she was hearing. "Mikey," she breathed, unconsciously leaning into his touch. "I... I don't want anyone else either. It's always been you. I just didn't realize..."
Overwhelmed with emotion, Mikey suddenly pulled her into his arms, hands fisting in her hair. "Say it again," he demanded lowly. "Tell me you're mine."
Y/N wound her arms around his neck, meeting his burning gaze head on. "I'm yours, Mikey. Your soulmate. Only yours."
With a low groan, Mikey crashed his lips against hers in a searing kiss. Y/N responded with equal fervor, a whimper escaping her as weeks' worth of repressed longing surged to the surface.
They lost themselves in each other, hands roaming, tongues tangling with desperate hunger as the sun slowly sank below the horizon and stars emerged overhead. When they finally broke apart, they were both breathing hard, lips swollen and eyes glazed. Mikey rested his forehead against Y/N's, fingers flexing possessively on her hips.
"I can't believe I never realized," he murmured, nuzzling her cheek adoringly. "All this time, you were right in front of me..."
Y/N smiled, happy tears pricking at her eyes as she cupped his face. "We were both pretty oblivious, huh? Good thing fate decided to knock some sense into us with the whole soulmate thing."
Mikey huffed a laugh, pressing a soft kiss to her palm. "Guess so. Better late than never." His expression sobered and he caught her marked wrist, bringing it to his lips. "I still can't wrap my head around it. That you're my soulmate, my perfect match. But it feels... right. Like a missing piece just clicked into place."
Y/N nodded, heart full to bursting. "I know what you mean. It's overwhelming but in the best way. We fit, Mikey. In every sense of the word."
He smiled, a full, genuine grin that lit up his entire face and made Y/N's breath catch. She didn't think she'd ever get used to having that smile directed at her, knowing she was the reason for it.
Feeling emboldened, Y/N picked up the discarded marker from earlier and uncapped it. Maintaining eye contact, she drew a small heart on the inside of her wrist. A moment later, an identical design bloomed to life on Mikey's skin.
His eyes darkened and in a flash, he had her pinned against a tree, mouth slanting over hers hungrily. Y/N laughed breathlessly into the kiss, delirious with joy and desire. She knew they'd have to head back to the meeting soon, that the real world and all its problems still awaited them.
But for now, wrapped in her soulmate's strong arms as the moonlight caressed their entwined silhouettes, Y/N let herself believe that everything would be okay. That with Mikey by her side, with their bond made tangible through the art on their skin, she could face anything.
"I love you," she whispered against his lips, the words welling up inside her, no longer able to be contained.
Mikey's arms tightened around her and he pulled back just far enough to meet her eyes, his own shining with emotion.
"I love you too," he rasped. "So damn much. I'll always protect you, Y/N. No matter what darkness tries to take hold of me, you'll be my light. My reason to stay on the right path. I swear it."
Tears spilled down Y/N's cheeks at the raw conviction in his voice. She knew the heavy burden he carried, the demons constantly whispering in his ear, tempting him to succumb to his worst impulses. But here and now, making such a heartfelt vow, she could see the real Mikey - the hurt boy who felt things too deeply, who loved with his entire being, who would walk through fire for those precious to him.
"We'll protect each other," she promised fiercely, sealing it with another kiss. "You're not alone anymore, Mikey. You have me, your soulmate. I'll never leave your side. We'll get through anything together."
He captured her lips once more, the slide of their mouths both soothing and inflaming. They kissed languidly beneath the star-strewn sky, enjoying this pocket of time that belonged only to them, where they could just exist without the weight of the world pressing down.
Tomorrow there would be challenges to face, battles to fight, a gang to lead. But they would do it hand in hand, two halves of a whole, yin and yang, push and pull. Soulmates in every sense, their connection now visible for all to see in the inked declarations of love scrolling across their skin.
Whatever the future held, Y/N knew one thing for certain - Mikey was hers and she was his. An eternal truth written in the very fabric of the universe. And together, they would fill the blank pages of their story with vibrant color, the dark and light entwining to create a masterpiece.
