Thorin wasn't able to save his own nephews but he saved Bilbo's and ultimately the world
It blows my mind that by giving the mithril shirt to Bilbo, Thorin indirectly saved Frodo and thus prevented the Ring-bearer from dying and the Quest from failing. The world was ultimately saved because the exiled King Under the Mountain fell in love with a hobbit.

Just something about how Elrond is described as "kind as summer." You can't go wrong with that. Elrond is amazing.
But the history of Elrond is so fucking tragic â if anything, Elrond should be turned evil, like FĂ«anĂĄro or Maedhros.
But he didn't.
He lost his parents, his brother, his foster parents, his wife, his daughter, etc... and yet he's an amazing person.
Elrond being one of the bad guys would have been understandable. But he chose to be a good person who helped maintain the stability of Middle-Earth.
Despite all his pain, grief, losses, etc â Elrond chose to stay patient and prevent more people from experiencing the same losses he did.
This just shows one of the many different outcomes of pain that Tolkien presents; rather than going mad, like Fëanåro, or becoming an anti-hero, like Maedhros, or even disappearing, like Maglor, Elrond chose to stay sane and be a hero for Middle-Earth.
I love that about them
It's rather ironic.
It's rather ironic how the things that caused destruction in Tolkien's work often ended up being the key to saving everything.
The Silmarils were the only reason the Valar bothered to come fight Morgoth (550 years late with a Starbucks).
The Elven rings were the only reason the Free Peoples of Middle Earth were able to hold out for as long as they did against Mordor.
Sméagol, who killed so many, was the one who destroyed the One Ring, not Frodo.

"Will you then pass over Sea?" Celebrimbor asked.
"Nay," Galadriel said. "Angrod is gone, and Aegnor is gone, and Felagund is no more. Of Finarfinâs children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.â

Gondor During The Hobbit

They didnât know it, of course, but 2941 was sort of Gondorâs Last Summer, if youâll excuse the WWI reference. Because by the end of The Hobbit, the White Council has driven Sauron out of Dol Guldur, and right back to his old stronghold in Mordor, which basically started a period of ongoing warfare with Gondor that lasted the next 78 years.
So, what was happening in Gondor during these last few months of relative peace?
Denethor II, father of Boromir and Faramir, is 11 years old. His grandfather, Turgon, is steward of Gondor, and he is at this point in his life likely living in Minas Tirith with his parents and two older sisters. Denethor was said to be an exceptionally learned man, so itâs likely that even at age 11 heâs already quite dedicated to his studies.
Turgon, the Steward of Gondor, is nearing the end of his life at 94 years old. Heâs been ruling Gondor for 35 years now, and during his rule has had to deal with steadily worsening conditions in Ithilien (the region had been infested with orcs since the days of his fatherâs rule. Luckily, Turgon inherited the fortified and secret ranger camps that his father had had built. By 2941 these ranger forts were forty years old, so Iâd imagine the entire ranger system was pretty well established by now.Â
What with the orcs and all, Ithilien was only lightly populated by this point. And, in fact, when Sauron does arrive at the end of the year, the last of the people who lived in Ithilien fled the region. Many of the descendants of these people will make up the ranger force that Faramir commands during the War of the Ring.
Prince Angelimir, the grandfather of Imrahil and Finduilas, rules in Dol Amroth. Tolkien didnât record anything of his rule, but itâs likely it was basically uneventful at that period, mainly just watching out for attacks from Umbar.
Morwen Steelsheen, Theodenâs mother, was 19 years old and living in Lossarnach. In two years she would marry her husband, Thengel son of the king of Rohan - itâs possible that theyâve already met.
Meanwhile, somewhere far to the north, a little hobbit is sorely missing his pantry back in Bag End, completely unaware of how his adventure is going to affect the rest of the world.

I love that bard is almost impressed by Bilbo's antics.

Extended Gate Scene in 4k
Reloging cus Tolkien was a boss man and a great freaking writer.

For the people of the internet out there saying Thranduil didn't intend to fight because he was wearing his fancy crown and not the circlet he fights in during Battle of Five Armies can I remind y'all that canon Elvenking picks his crowns based on season not occasion. So this is obviously his fall crown both thematically and based on when we see him wear it in the films. Now it's repeatedly stated that Thorin & Co arrive on the last day of autumn.
So this isn't so much his battle crown as it is his winter crown

Morgoth vs Fingolfin in a nutshell
A new video where I give an alternative perspective of the causes of Fandom Tourism and Gatekeeping and the alternative solutions
I do genuinely believe that the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (and arguably the Zelda franchise as a whole, though i myself have played literally none of these games) is closer to fitting the description of âTolkien-esque Fantasyâ than most other movies/shows/games/books etc that claim that label
Like, compare this post by tumblr user wufflesvetinari, which makes an important point about Tolkienâs worldbuilding, and also lives in my head rent free:

and then these quotes from Jacob Gellerâs âEvery Zelda is the Darkest Zeldaâ

and his conclusions about the messages in Zelda games are thematically very similar to the through-lines about friendship and love in LOTR, and what a lot of authors miss about what makes a fantasy story personal and memorable:

âA world without joy and humor isnât a compelling world to fight forâ is exactly why there are so many pieces of fantasy media out there that just feel like carbon copies of each other (iâve seen many posts that explain this better than I can though I canât find any specific ones at the moment, just know that I didnât invent this thesis). Youâve got the cool swords, youâve got the wizards and the spells and the battles, but first and foremost you need the LOVE.
