Ya’ll, I got an abnormal melanoma diagnosis at 14. My condition was considered so strange that I was thought of as a medical anomaly by almost every doctor that saw me. I had five surgical procedures to deal with the issue. It. Can. Happen. To. Anyone.
Some small reminders as summer rolls around. Remember, the steps are easy but the S.T.A.K.E.S are high:
1) S- Sunscreen. Sunscreen, for everyone. Even if you have darker skin, it’s vital. Black folks often go undiagnosed because doctors are not used to detecting melanoma on darker skin. Skin protection is essential for everyone, as melanoma can even be more dangerous for folks with more ‘natural skin protection’ (aka people with higher levels of melanin in their skin) because of failures in our medical system. Reapply every hour or so. I recommend at least 45 SPF.
2) T- Time. Try and stay out of the sun between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm / 10:00 and 14:00.
3) A- Attire. Wear long sleeved clothing made of lightweight materials such as cotton or linen when possible. This includes longsleeved tops and at least calf-length bottoms. For anyone out there who enjoys wearing skirts or dresses, you’re in luck! Longer ‘peasant’ style dresses and skirts are currently in style and can thus be found cheaply online and in store. Modest dressing can be fashionable and protective, folks. Wonderful ideas for modest dressing in the summer can be found easily on Insta; our beautiful Muslim siblings have been of great inspiration to me.
4) K- Keppie. Protect it. Hats, hats, hats. Even for people with thicker hair such as myself. Melanoma of the scalp can often go unnoticed.
5) E- Eyes. Eye protection. Yes, melanoma of the eye is possible, and I am frequently checked for it. Sunnies or tinted glasses help.
6) S- Surveillance. Keep an eye on your moles. Healthy moles are typically round in shape, of one colour, and flat. If you find a spot on your skin that has grown to become abnormally shaped, discoloured, or raised, seek out a dermatologist if possible. My melanoma was so abnormal-looking that several professionals thought it was a skin tag. They can look like anything.
Stay safe this summer and all year long, friends. You may not love the skin you’re in, but it doesn’t mean it’s worth ignoring.

Guys, please, please please get your moles looked at. There’s a lot of shit going on & you might think doctors have much better things to do but it’s so important. I’ve had a mole on my upper arm since I was a kid, I ignored it, in the middle of the pandemic it started to change shape & size & I thought fuck it, I’ll go eventually they’re busy right now. Now I have malignant melanoma that may have spread to my lymph nodes.
Just go have a doctor or nurse look at it, it won’t take long & then they’ll be able to measure it every time you go in. Early detection is everything. Don’t make me post pictures of what’s left of my arm. Just go, goddammit
PLEASE HELP ME GET TOP SURGERY!!!

i'm an unemployed trans artist who needs help paying for top surgery! my insurance will cover most of it but i've already been made aware that to get the results i want there will be $3691 fee, on top of the costs for a 1 week stay at a hotel (getting surgery out of state). please help me out if you can!!!
if you'd like to get something out of it, please check out my commissions page!! any little bit helps so please don't feel bad if you can't support ^^ rb'ing would help me out a lot!!

Would trans merpeople get bottom surgery (only if they wanted obviously)? Would that be something they could get? Cause like... some fish have dicks... but I'm no fishologist.

Once in a blue moon, I draw some gore- usually not as heavy as this stuff though. Proceed with caution- warning, raw torn out meat and chimeric unethical experiments!

Ok, had my hysterectomy two days ago. Everything went well, no complications. And I have actually stopped taking the pain meds, because this is legitimately less painful that any period cramp I've ever had. I didn't think my cramps were that bad? Hearing the way some folks talk about them, it didn't seem like what I was dealing with was all that extreme. But if three surgical incisions and two missing organs hurts less than the cramps did I was probably just not processing the pain well at the time. I do still have one ovary left, so it's possible I could get cramping from that, but they took the right side out, so if I get any pain over there it's probably the appendix instead. Ether way. I have been successfully removed from the gene pool.

Reblogging to add the context for anyone who doesn’t know about the spine incident TM

The run & issues/where to read the arc:
It goes down in Batman & Robin (2009) - which is the run where Dick is Batman and Damian becomes/starts being Robin. The spine arc starts in issue #6 and ends in #12 but I would advise reading the issues before it (#6 is when he gets paralysed not when the story arc begins). Obviously my explanation has spoilers so heads up for that
(Also heads up if anyone decides to read the run - it’s a very good run, would absolutely recommend, we stan the dynamic duo 2.0 - but the run has a very uh- interesting way of writing Jason so maybe take his stuff with a grain salt)
Actual explanation:
Ok so, Dick and Damian (+Jason and his child sidekick but that’s not important) fight a serial killer called flamingo and during the fight he shoots and paralyses Damian
(Batman & Robin 2009 #6) (the panels are skipping over non-spine stuff)

This is back before he cut ties with the league of assassins so his mum comes to pick him up and the league heals him & replaces his spine with a metal, presumably titanium, one (+connects his nerves to the new one) so he’s not paralysed anymore
(Batman & Robin #6 + #7)

Skip ahead a couple issues and past the zombie Batman arc. Turns out Damian’s spine had a chip in it so that the league could control his nervous system via sci-fi Bluetooth and force him to kill Dick.
(Batman & Robin 2009 #11 + #12)

They manage to temporarily stop the nerve control and then take out the chip. The whole ordeal, quite fairly, really disturbs Damian who ends up leaving the league over it.
(Batman & Robin 2009 #12)

And so ends the spine arc TM
Seriously tho, I highly recommend this run, it’s so pivotal to Dick and Damian and is the basis for their entire relationship (for added points or if yall wanna go on a reading binge Red Robin 2009 takes place during the same time frame and obviously has some amount of crossover in terms of searching for Bruce after his “death”)

happy nine year anniversary to me for my brain surgery!
nine years ago today, i went into surgery to have part of my brain removed to hopefully stop my seizures. sadly, it didnt work and they came back again a few years later.
but those few years were i was seizure free, finally able to stop taking years after almost 5-6 years, was such a freeing and joyful feeling that im so grateful i was able to experience <3
I have been through two surgeries
Damn who knew a bruised thumb hurt this much
top surgery wouldn't fix me but it sure as hell would be interesting
"Beautiful and shiny
It's cheap and at last
I'm forever smiling
I love an innocent lab coat
(It's) approaching with a smile
It's the master and it's already known
I slowly lose consciousness
As if in a lover's embrace
Beautiful and shiny
I am beautiful and shiny
I love myself at last
Without gender in this life will grow
A shiny vanity"
Since it's disability pride month, here's an old story I wrote about someone choosing to become disabled. It's gruesome in parts and there's some vaguely described medical stuff, body horror, and ceremonial cannibalism, so warnings for that. I've always yearned for more disability in scifi and having it on full display or as a point of strength instead of just something to cure or hide away. There's a Radiolab episode that posits we'd make better astronauts and space explorers because we're already used to limitations and that makes it all the more something that should be explored I say.
Having had no less than seven surgeries, I am always deeply amused by how romance authors and sick fic creators almost never know what recovery is like. The recovery bay where a bunch of hospital staff is what you become aware of first, not your loved ones at your bedside. And in most cases you are already kinda sitting up so no fond gazes from above. Also you will be too high and groggy for the next day or so, with a nurse stopping by every fifteen minutes. There is not nearly enough coordination in you after even a minor surgery to hold much of a conversation, let alone anything else. XD
