[Valarian] closed the flap of his black leather satchel and turned the small metal lock on it. “I might have a hole in my bag.” “You think?” said the bird. The feathered creature watched the man close his bag and readjust it to hang comfortably at his hip. The black bird stretched out his head, fluffing out his hackles. He cocked his head from side to side then croaked, “I thought that was a sash”. “What’s that?” asked the man. “The strap of your satchel… covered in medals. I thought that was a sash all along. Didn’t realize it was just the strap of your bag.” “Not everything is as it appears,” the man said with a smirk. “How poetic,” said the bird in a dry monotone.
