Winter Writeblr Ask Game!

My October-themed ask game went over pretty well, so here’s one in time for December.

Like before, it’s a mix of OC questions, writer questions, and calls to share snippets:

❄️ Snowflake: talk about a unique trait or aspect of your favorite OC. Have they been living rent-free in your brain? It’s time to talk about them!

🔥 Fireplace: what type of scene are you most comfortable writing? Emotional, action, dialogue-heavy?

🥶 Ice: what’s been the most difficult scene for you to write?

☕️ Hot Cocoa: what do your OCs do if they need reassurance or comfort? Do they talk to someone/fall back on a certain activity?

🧤Gloves: share a snippet you’re particularly proud of!

🧣Scarf: tell us about a secret your OC has and what would happen if they revealed it.

🌲Pine Tree: share a snippet that shows a character being strong (whether that’s physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.)

🌟Night Sky: what are your writing goals for 2023? Or: how did you feel about your writing in 2022?

🍲 Soup: share a snippet where a character does something kind.

⛸️ Ice Skating: tell us about a skill your OC has. Is it unusual? Something they worked hard on? Does it ever come in handy?

🛷 Sled: how has your writing process changed this year? Or: are you going to try anything new in your process in 2023?

"🧤Gloves: share a snippet you’re particularly proud of!"

Ok so get ready 'cause this is a long one (and sadly no images for this post)--

I haven't talked about this (I think) but sometimes I write scenes in a doc or sort out my thoughts with a friend of mine (thank god she's okay with it).

I've got A LOT of stuff I'm proud of from these scenes I haven't been able to put in comic form because limitations and willpower.

For example, have this really old and potentially not that well written bit from me trying to write out Espresso and Madeleine during their little Christmas side story (I did flower symbolism research before writing it):

[start of snippet]

Espresso stood up abruptly and dropped his book onto the couch before storming to the door. He took a quick breath to try calming himself down and unlocked the door. He yanked it open and glared at the only human out there who would bother him now: Madeleine.

Madeleine's eyes were wide with surprise. He was holding a bag obviously containing gifts and something that almost threw off Espresso's glare entirely: a bouquet of flowers. It wasn't anything big—red tulips and white roses throughout—but what had nearly caused such a double take was the single black dahlia in the center. It wasn't truly black (instead being a dark burgundy), but something about it almost made Espresso's heart stop. Perhaps it was just how much it felt out of place. Perhaps it had a hidden meaning that he couldn't figure out in that moment. Nonetheless, it was there, and it was blooming against the brightness and warmth surrounding it.

[end snippet]

Imma put the takeaways I got from me literally just asking google and looking at flower sites as well and putting it on the doc:

Black flowers are usually negative, but a single one with a gift can show a "powerful gesture with a hint of mystery" and apparently a black dahlia makes a great centerpiece. (source: https://www.interflora.co.uk/blog/black-flowers)

Red tulips = perfect love

white rose = purity. Often used in weddings

Black dahlia (usually dark burgundy) = negative, sadness, betrayal. (Espresso himself)

Am I an expert on flower bouquets? No. Would Madeleine Cookie know his way around flowers in the AU really well? Also no.

I'm just proud of myself for using flower symbolism, though my excitement has cooled off a bit since January and last year's December.

btw if you wanna send in the same prompt or another one I don't mind it helps me focus on this au in particular--

🍲 for your newest wip?

Gladly! I have the perfect thing

🍲 Soup: share a snippet where a character does something kind.

"Cuckoo," Maggie said, fixing them with a glare as Cuckoo sprawled out on her carpet. "What are you doing here?"

Cuckoo blew their hair out of their face. "Oh, y'know. The usual."

Maggie raised an eyebrow.

"I found-"

"Stole?"

"Found a new trinket I thought you'd like," Cuckoo corrected.

Maggie was unimpressed. "And you're delivering this so late because?"

"I saw your lights on. And I didn't see you outside watching your girlfriend painting the sunset," Cuckoo stated, as if it was obvious.

"That's not creepy at all."

Cuckoo sighed. "Oh, come on," they wheeled. "You know I'm in the area all the time. I figured..." they rolled over and sat up, pushing their fingers against Maggie's hip which was not taking any of her weight. Maggie winced. "I was right, obviously. They were coddling you and you need cheering up."

They yanked her hand down, pulling themself to their knees, and dropped a silver locket unceremoniously into her palm.

Hello! For the winter asks:

🧤Gloves: share a snippet you’re particularly proud of!

Thanks for the ask!

I know I know this isn't from any wip but I did write a really great description from a horror short story.

Quick narrative summary: Super dedicated scholar is trying to save the library of Alexandria before Emperor Theodosius I can have it destroyed. He finds an old scroll with a protection ritual on the back, collected by Callimachus about the grecco-egyptian god of the city, Serapis.

I shudder to think what would have happened if this statue would have looked at if left to weather the elements. It likely would have been covered in moss, making any hairy areas seem as though the statue was coming to life, and crawling vines would have overtaken it like veins bursting from the skin. Fortunately, this was not the case. Unfortunately, the damages done were far worse. The hound Cerberus at his feet looked almost like a normal dog — only one of his three heads was complete, the other two lacking ears and nose and jowls. The remaining head had what would have been its skull caved in. It made the dog look murderous, eyes narrowed, remains of his latest meal rubble between his fangs. Serapis’ legs and lower toga looked like tree bark, chipped and pockmarked by shards from destruction occurring higher up. His chair was on the edge of toppling over, the back legs knocked clean away. I held up what was once his upright arm that held a scroll from our great library — it had flown halfway across the open space — and I could see matching divots where the arm was used as a club to knock out the legs. Serapis’ chest was caved in, though the rubble in his lap constituted more than the missing chunks from his chest; this was likely where his other arm had ended up. His face was unrecognizable. Upon further inspection, it seemed a fist had done this damage, though no blood had been left on the stone. Holding up my own fist to the veritable pebbles in the crater, the damage seemed to have been done by a similarly sized hand. There seemed to be anger emanating from the statue, though because of what I can only speculate on; perhaps the destruction of the statue itself, or of the city Serapis holds so dear.

☕️ and ⛸️ from this ask game, pls? also good to see you around, eve! sending good ~~ vibes ~~ and good luck to ya. :3 - 💫 (@enchanted-lightning-aes)

enchant you're an angel <33 sending good vibes back because you gave me no names, I will take the liberty of picking two characters for each question from a quest of cards and calamity ☕️ Hot Cocoa: what do your OCs do if they need reassurance or comfort? Do they talk to someone/fall back on a certain activity? Alex (prior to the narrative) often needed reassurance and comfort, since their curse messed up interactions with people and basic tasks, yet they believed the faults were their own. So there are many afternoons where they are found sitting on the large windowsill in their room with the windows flung open, vibing with the animals - a capybara on their lap, a tapir by their side, and various birds on their shoulders and in their hair. Animals don't judge and no one goes to that part of the forest. Bennie destressed in his garden. After a long day dealing with customers who could somehow never interpret his painstakingly simple instructions correctly and minor injuries they could have tended to at home, they find no better place to be than among dirt and leaves. Covered all the way up to his elbows in earth, weeds curling and dying in the folds of his skirt, and a trowel waiting to be used by their side.

⛸️ Ice Skating: tell us about a skill your OC has. Is it unusual? Something they worked hard on? Does it ever come in handy? Cuckoo (when magic was around) was really great at manipulating the taste of things with their illusions. She would mess with people at the circus, often making some panic by making them think they were eating something they were allergic to when they were actually okay. They used it often when bouncing from village to village - she'd make chefs or patrons think food had spoiled so they would throw it out for her to eat. Though, sometimes she still made a scene in a restaurant. Just for fun. Maggie translated her wealth of knowledge for intricate braids - which came from days of practice being shut up in the house for her own protection - to learning to tie a myriad of sea-worthy knots. She hasn't used that skill yet, but she's sure it'll come in handy someday. Maybe. Hopefully.

hello!!! <33 🧣 and ❄️ for the winter asks please!! i love you so much klsdjfasdf

I love you more!! And I included your favorite <3

❄️ Snowflake: talk about a unique trait or aspect of your favorite OC. Have they been living rent-free in your brain? It’s time to talk about them!

While I’m not saying it’s a good thing, I’m obsessed with how cuckoo interacts with the world. Any action she takes is almost guaranteed to increase chaos in any given situation. Chaotic neutral leaning on chaotic evil - she doesn’t want to kill anyone but if that will cause the most havoc, things will be as they be. I love thinking up plans she’ll concoct and not communicate simply so see what she articulates fall through. She lives for the look of horror on people’s faces and I love that for her.

🧣Scarf: tell us about a secret your OC has and what would happen if they revealed it.

In the village where everyone comes from, bendis is widely regarded as a competent healer, taking over his parents business with an unrivaled passion. He tends a beautiful garden and they only sometimes cheats with magic. However, not many people know that he’s an avid poisonist. Tucked away in a corner of the garden, he meticulously grows toxic and deadly plants that could kill with a single leaf. Though some can be used in medicine when prepared appropriately, the majority are sold on the black market. Since Ben is known as an upright citizen, it could tarnish their reputation for dealing in seemingly nefarious places with sinister business. He sees it purely as another source of income since he employs help in the shop, and genuinely enjoys the challenge of raising then deadly crops.
