85 years ago today, France and England declared war on Germany after she invaded Poland, starting World War II. As the greatest human conflict of history, its death toll remains unmatched.

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

Bucky Barnes got drafted into WWII. He spends all day at the conscription office trying to argue his way out. At the end of the day he goes home to Steve and tells him he enlisted. How do you tell your best guy who just wants to join the war that you wouldn't be going if you didn't have to?

Or, the beginning of Captain America: The First Avenger from Bucky's pov.

Fort Taylor, Key West

This was another place I visited while in Key West with my family. It was a magnificent old fort. Much of it was buried over the years thanks to various expansion projects, and several old cannons were used as rebar!

But, much of it has been dug out and sympathetically restored, revealing the beautiful brickwork and former gun ports. As you can see, they've got several of the old cannons and guns on display!

The fort was in use from the mid-19th century, right up until after WWII. Now that's some history for you!

This is really just the “Ender’s Game” series. Like, has anyone here read “Children of the Mind”?

It also is just a larger version of the decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan.

I am curious about what Tumblr has to say about this.

So recently in the hell hole that was Twitter, I saw this:

And I want to see what Tumblr had to say about it. Credit to @MrAntiHero1 on Twitter for posting this originally. And please vote below.

Happy birthday, Randall Jarrell (b. 6 May 1914)

The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner From my mother’s sleep I fell into the State, And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze. Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life, I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters. When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose. - Randall Jarrell

In May 1939, as the Nazis were tightening their chokehold on Europe, the United States government rejected the SS St. Louis, a German passenger vessel carrying 937 refugees who were trying to dock at the Port of Miami.

Almost all of those refugees were Jews fleeing violence in Germany and Eastern Europe, according to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. The ship was eventually forced to return to Europe, where 254 of its passengers were killed.

On Friday, to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a pair of Jewish scholars — Russel Neiss and Charlie Schwartz — started tweeting the names of the people who were aboard the SS St. Louis, under the handle @Stl_Manifest. Read more

Do You Know What This Is? This Is The Heart From Auschwitz.

Do you know what this is? This is The Heart from Auschwitz.

An act of defiance. A statement of hope. A crime punishable by death.

On December 12, 1944, locked inside Auschwitz, Polish teenager Fania turned twenty. After spending a year in a concentration camp, Fania didn’t expect her birthday to even be remembered - but her best friend, Zlatka, risked everything to make her a birthday present, a paper heart.

Simply making the heart - or carrying it - could get either of them killed.

The heart was signed by many of their friends, bearing notes in Polish, German, French, and Hebrew that announced "When you get old, put your glasses on your nose, take this album in your hand and read my signature again,“ and “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” It was an act of great sacrifice and love for a friend.

Less than 40 days later, they began the Death March from Auschwitz to Ravensbruck, and from Ravensbruck to freedom. Fania carried the heart under her arm the whole time. And survived.

Fania donated the heart to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Center in 1988, where it is a featured piece of their exhibit. You can read more about the story of Fania and Zlatka Meg Wiviott’s Paper Hearts, coming September 2015.

A.C. Strip Has Long Understood The Significance Of The Diary His Older Brother Kept As They Fled The

A.C. Strip has long understood the significance of the diary his older brother kept as they fled the Holocaust with their parents. He turned it into a self-published book that he gave to his brother as a 90th birthday gift.

But Strip never considered the diary to be an important historical document. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is making him rethink that.

Strip’s brother’s journal is one of more than 200 diaries written by Holocaust victims and survivors the museum hopes to digitize and make available to the public with the help of its first crowd-funding campaign. The museum is seeking $250,000 for the project and will begin soliciting donations through Kickstarter on Monday, the birthday of the most famous Holocaust diarist, Anne Frank.

Sooo, I have this problem: I recently introduced my best friend (and her husband) to Band of Brothers and we watched the first two episodes together. It was wonderful! She recognized so many actors, got invested in the story really fast and was immediately scared for all of them.

But (and this is a big BUT) what she doesn't know: I've watched the series plenty of times, I read ours on ours of fanfictions, I'm craving all these funny Tumblr posts and I ship the frickin HELL out of these beautiful brave boys.

And I don't know how to contain all these feelings!!!

Like, can you imagine sitting there, not being able to scream 'Look at them!! Do you see the love? DO YOU SEE IT????' 😱

The only positive thing is we're both German and the series gives us plenty of interesting things to discuss, like how in TV shows and movies we're always rooting for the Americans, but in reality we would be the evil ones, or how our (great) grandparents experienced the war and how we grew up with this huge guilt.

I'm so happy this unbelievable show exists!

Currently reading "Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing and Dying - The Secret WWII transcripts of German POWs", after I saw this very interesting interview on YouTube.

Currently Reading "Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing And Dying - The Secret WWII Transcripts Of German POWs",

I'm reading the german version because I wanted to know how they expressed themselves in the 40s and how they phrased their experiences.

So far it's shocking to see how fast people lose their compassion, humanity and sense for right and wrong in a war.

Can definitely recommend it.

My first attempt at a canopy mask. I found that masking tape made for scale models works better than masking tape from the hardware store. Also, tried to do a little weathering. Though far from perfect, I learned a few things and had a lot of fun.

That Vegan Teacher

I respect the fact people are vegan, and totally support it. However, there is one issue.

When the woman known as "that vegan teacher" had her accounts banned on TikTok, she once made an account with the name "that holocaust teacher", and also posted a video comparing animal consumption to the Holocaust.

It's one thing to promote the vegan movement, but using a mass genocide that killed over 6 million people as a comparison? I am of Jewish descent, and I found this immensely disrespectful to the victims of the Holocaust and their families.

So this is a message to That Vegan Teacher:

Before you compare animal product consumption to mass genocides, go to an actual concentration camp, see the mass graves, and then think about how your words affect others.

The people in those concentration camps had their dignity stripped away. Many people died, and the ones who didn't saw how their loved ones became walking skeletons before they dropped dead from hunger. They saw how their children, siblings, parents, grandparents and friends were dragged into gas chambers, and the next time they saw them was when they were dragging their corpses into the crematoriums.

The torture that these people went through was inhumane, to the point where some lost their minds, and others simply ceased to be "there", becoming husks of what they once were.

So please, think about what you say and how it may affect the people who are watching your videos.
