There was a pleasant thrum coursing over your limbs, a sensation that contrasted sharply with the burning ache that would ripple over your body periodically before it was soothed once more. You were dreaming, you knew you were dreaming, or perhaps you were just lingering, floating in the space between waking and the depths of unconsciousness. Either way, you weren’t quite awake just yet. Sounds drifted over you, muffled and diluted, like they were slipping over your ears through deep, deep water. Sometimes, the sounds would grow louder, clearer through the filter that had settled over your eardrums, and you thought you could hear distinct voices. Then the sounds would muffle once more and you’d float a little further. You could have spent an eternity in that space and you wouldn’t have even noticed.

Eventually, however, the time came for you to resurface in the world of the living. You hadn’t heard any noise for a solid amount of time before gradually, you gained a little more awareness in your limbs, a little more coherent thought flitting about your mind, and you were fluttering awake with a groan that scraped across your dry throat like the wisps of paperbark over sand.

“Holy fuck,” was the first thing to fall from your mouth, poorly structured and borderline incoherent with the lack of proper respiration behind your speech. You blinked blearily, eyes feeling crusty and heavy as you noticed the state your body was in. It didn’t hurt, but it felt like there was a weight over some areas, a subconscious sort of awareness and attention to them that told you they’d probably been hurt before you passed out. Blinking some more, you glanced to the side to survey your whereabouts when you froze, eyes going wide as a barrage of memories flooded your mind.
