I’m so confused rn…when Amber was asked to explain the honeymoon photo of Johnny with his eye swollen she goes off on a tangent about how he grabbed her by the throat and bashed her up against the wall, so she started clawing at him to try and get him off of her and ended up ripping his shirt on accident, which he then took off and started strangling her with, then the next thing she remembers is waking up the next morning with the shirt still tied around her neck and a big ass knot on her head…so wtf happened to his eye? To quote Amber in her deposition, am I missing something? Like was she talking about a different incident orr?

friendly reminder that “mutual abuse” is literally considered a myth by a lot of experts in the area of IPV, DV, and abusive relationships in general. 

abuse is all about an imbalance of power and control. in an abusive relationship one person tends to have more control than the other and of the other. both can of course behave in unhealthy and toxic ways because of the abuse, but “mutual abuse” is literally being debunked by therapists that even goes as far as to say: “mutually abusive relationships don’t exist.”

instead what people often confuse as being “mutual abuse” is actually known as reactive abuse. when the abused partner has had enough and finally decides to fight back, not ‘cause they want power and control to persist, but because they want the power and control to stop. therefore it’s important to note who’s initiating the abuse (aka who’s in control) and who’s reacting (aka who’s being abused).

claims of “mutual abuse” is used to shift blame and manipulate the abused into believing that they’re an abuser themselves who’s equally - if not more - responsible for the abuse as the actual abuser, experts say, calling the term a “victim-blaming tactic.”

used to gaslight the victim, like for example claiming their reactive anger as aggressive behaviour. this is all a part of the abuse to gain that control and power over the other. using the victim’s possibly violent self-defence to manipulate others into believing that the roles are reversed and that the abuser is not the abuser but rather the abused.

my own personal experience echoes this; my abuser loved to remind me of how hurtful, irrational, and difficult i was being towards her (yes, her.. a woman). and while i did eventually behave in a toxic way towards her, this was me reacting to her abuse, when i had my meltdowns of having had enough. i’m not proud of how i behaved back then.. not proud of some of the things i said and did. it’s not who i am and what i stand for, but i recognise it for what it was: resistance of the control and power she tried to have over me.

abuse can push you so close to the edge that you feel it necessary to act in ways that aren’t in alignment with who you are.. just to survive another day.

if you’ve ever displayed reactive abuse towards your abuser, that does not make you an abuser too. self defence is not mutual abuse.

AH Stans will also never look at how much addiction was demonized through the trial, and unlike the BPD diagnosis JD's substance abuse was AH's team's biggest defense they had as to why he wasn't credible and had to be abusive.

Right?! They really wanted to use it as what the kids call a 'gotcha' when it was just so misinformed, so obviously crafted to demonize JD and create a false image of him. And it will forever piss me off that Rottenborn brought up JD being partially-sighted in closing, and brought up his past trauma as if it wasn't 'that bad', as if we should scoff at it. Laugh at it, even. There are so many things that piss me off to this day. If AH had been the one who was partially sighted and hypoglycaemic they would have 'yassss queen'ed their way through every little thing she did. But because it's Johnny he gets shit for it.
