Near has been fundamentally misunderstood by the Death Note fandom for a very long time
Those who claim that Near is a robotic version of L forgot the fact that in "How to Read" it is said that his distaste towards Kira is even stronger than L, and that he detaches from the outside world because he's very sensitive
Sure, he doesn't physically and verbally express his feelings much, he doesn't socialize at all, but he's shown to be attuned to others' feelings and can read them quite well
Here Aizawa tells the story of how L was pressured to release Light from detainment. Even though names have been omitted, Near immediately picks up that there must be a close interpersonal relationship between the accused and Yagami Soichiro based on the line "I will kill Kira and then I will die too."
Also during the first meeting with Aizawa, he senses that Aizawa has reservation because Near and Mello are indirectly working together. And immediately he tells the story of how: "all of us in Wammy's House look up to L. When we know that he's been killed, we wanted to do whatever it takes to find the culprit. Mello too. It's not so difficult to understand is it?"
Even though Mello murdered much of the SPK, Near is still arguing on Mello's behalf (of course it might be a persuasion tactic too). But in either case, Near understands others' emotions and approaches them directly.
Of course when poked he also expresses his emotions without restraint, albeit it takes quite a bit to get him angry
Not to mention the C-Kira arc is dedicated entirely to Near overcoming his feelings of inadequacy and self-actualizing his own version of L
In conclusion, this baby deserves love and a daily squish of the cheeks

Near was majorly screwed over by his name like I'm sorry Nate? Nate??? Nate is the name of the guy who spent his year in the high school football team on the bench and appears on the local paper for having his teeth punched out at a bar. Not the super-detective/existentialist.
Henceforth I propose 3 new names for Near
1. Noir (Japanese: ノワール)
Meaning: dark, black
Why I like it: it sounds fucking cool, also it has an ironic edge because his color palette is white
Full name: Noir River
2. Neile (Japanese: ニール)
Meaning: champion
Why I like it: well Near won in the end didn't he?
Full name: Neile River
3. Nikola (Japanese: ニコラ)
Meaning: victor of the people
Why I like it: Nikola Tesla
Full name: Nikola River
I feel like there is a point in manga Death Note's general lack of gore because it shows how easy it is to kill when you have such power. You don't usually see the characters dying brutally. It's always from Light's perspective, to him, the people that he kills are just props and their deaths are just an event that has to happen. Even when we see L's death play out in full it's just from Light's POV, you don't see how painful or terrifying it is to die in such a way ...
Until the last few chapters where they get hella philosophical and upon realizing he was going to die, Light grovels and begs pathetically, he writhes and screams, all while Ryuk is standing over him like "welp you know how it goes, you got 40 seconds man"
The true horror that Light has committed in 6 years came back to slap him in the face. How many has he killed? So brutally? Thousands? Hundred thousands? Now he has to feel what they feel. It's a horrific reminder and a perfect end for such an unsympathetic villain
I respect the anime's changes for this specific scene, partly because I think adapting this faithfully probably would put a lot of mental strain on a voice actor. Especially since Miyano Mamoru said at some point that voicing Light put him in a perpetual bad mood. Would not want to push, I am good with reading. But they shoulda kept Near's existential monologues

The more days I live the more I find Takada absolutely moronic. She spews senseless Kira extremist bs to make herself feel important, she indulges in the fame that being the "Kira Queen" gives her
She has the capacity to use her head yet refuses to question anything around her
Near isn't particularly mean about Misa unlike the rest of the cast (albeit he never had to interact with her) but he looks down on Takada. It's a particular type of stupidity that ruffles his feathers.
