Thorbeckegracht, Zwolle (The Netherlands)

Zwolle, my hometown.

Upper left: Church tower, often called âPeperbusâ (meaning pepper mill) because of its shape, Zwolleâs most eye-catching building. Upper right:Peperbus (in the distance) with lunchroom Villa Suikerberg (âVilla Sugar Mountain) in front. Bottom left: The former town hall of the former municipality Zwollerkerspel. Bottom right: Sassenpoort (Medieval city gate).

New top, new hairdo.Â

The Broerenkerk Church â now named âWaanders in der broerenâ- in the city of Zwolle, the Netherlands, has been around since 1466 and has served as an active house of worship up until 1982, laying dormant for 3 decades until it reopened this July after a renovation carried out by local firm BK Architecten.

Me: Powerpuff style.Â

This summerâs plans: a road trip with my little brother and sister along the French West Coast. Starting in Paris, weâll head off to Bretagne (Brittany) to see Mont Saint-Michel, the famous city that becomes an island when the tide is high. Then weâre driving alongside the rough, rocky coastline of the penisula and enjoy all the dishes with fish and âfruits de merâ (shellfish). Next stop is La Rochelle, a picturesque seaport town with beautiful towers that mark the entrance of the harbour. The end of our road trip will be Bordeaux, famous for its wines. Weâll be borrowing our parentsâ car and travel from campsite to campsite with our tent.Â

Getting ready for Bordeaux. Boxing up all my stuff.Â
Bordeaux, here I come! September 19th, Iâm flying to Bordeaux. Iâm excited and a bit anxious at the same time. Iâm really excited to start on this new chapter of my life, I was getting tired of being stuck in this limbo in between finishing my study (my Bachelor thesis is taking forever) and âadulthoodâ, getting a grown-up job. At the same time thereâs so much going on here as well. Since two weeks Iâve got my first boyfriend ever. If that is not hard enough, weâll also be living about 1100 kilometers apart. We just gotta make it work, âcause I have never been so much in love. I told myself I shouldnât date anyone before moving to Bordeaux, but apparently I jinxed it, haha. Not complaining though, heâs a sweetheart.Â
A brief introduction. Permettez-moi de me prĂ©senter. Moi, je mâappelle Simon. Iâm a creative-being, language student, ginger covered in freckles, but most of all a Dutchie trying to become a Frenchie. The last five years I have studied French language and culture at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Now that I am almost finished itâs time for the next step: moving to France. My goal: to become fluent in French. I expect that it will take about a year, after which I will decide on staying in Bordeaux or returning to the Netherlands to begin a Masterâs degree course. Iâd like to become fluent in at least five languages, score so far: 2,5/5. Dutch, my native language, English and French (I am pretty fluent, but I am a perfectionist). So far my brief introduction, itâs already pretty elaborate. ÂĄHasta la prĂłxima vez! (I also speak some Spanish, haha!).Â
