Murderbot - Tumblr Posts
I'm back on it, decided to do smth diff, have some murderbot!!
Day 15: SecUnit | Murderbot & Asshole Research Transport | ART
It happens sometimes. Things get loud. Too loud. I can't think or focus or do any-fucking-thing but watch as my performance reliability drops. Fast.
Usually, I'm able to slip away and Deal With It. This time is no different. Ratti gives me an odd look, but doesn't push. He's considerate like that.
I'm able to get back to my room, slide to the floor and push my head between my legs before ART says anything. I'd forgotten it was watching, which is absolutely idiotic because it's always watching.
There's a light pressure against my feed. When I don't immediately buck against it, it grows. Spreads and presses down like a weighted blanket. Some complicated twist of emotions shudders through me, though I don't have the want or bandwidth to parse it.
Thanks. I send out.
Art pings me back. Stupid.
Then, after a second,
Always.

HOLY FREAKING BALONEY
MURDERBOT DIARIES MENTIONED
ohmygods im so autistic for the murderbot diaries holy hell I nEED to make TMD moodboards right now immediately omgomgomg
I love you robots and artificial intelligence with mental illness. I love you repression being depicted as literally deleting archived data to preserve functionality. I love you anxiety attacks being depicted as a system crashing virus. I love you ptsd being depicted as an annoying pop-up. I love you anxiety disorder being depicted as running thousands of simulations and projected outcomes. I love you artificial beings being shown to be human via their own artificiality.
HIIIIII

Working on a teeny murderbot to go with Paultin pony

Simon and his Dad.
ok. so. Murderbot can't eat, right? Well established, it's digestive system is different, nothing would happen except there would be food matter somewhere there shouldn't be. But! But but but, Muderbot can smell. The growth medium thing (and other instances) proves that. Which means Murderbot can probably taste things (in the air, specifically).
I don't think it will, however. And I think it's because Murderbot seems to view all of it's senses as tools for security, and security only. So where am I going with this?
I'd love for Murderbot so slowly start treating parts of itself less like tools and more like what makes it who it is. I feel like as much as Murderbot knows it's a person, it also treats itself so much less like a person. It always insists thing's are different for SecUnits and Bots, and that it and humans are almost incomparable in how they think, act, feel, etc. (Internalized anti–androidism or androidphobia if you will). And for Murderbot to acknowledge it's senses as more than just tools for the job, to experience it's world in a variety of ways just for the sake of it, for the sake of seeing new things and finding joy in them, would be one step closer to Murderbot acknowledging that you don't have to be human to be a person, and that's exactly what it is.
having several (VERY GOOD) Emotions over Murderbot book update
my System Collapse is finished, my crops are watered, and my soul is fed
That is such an ART move honestly
What made this really warm my heart was she later went on to say that one basis for writing Network Effect was that she wanted to see ART again, which made me die in the best way
Fascinating tidbit from tonight's Martha Wells Q&A: ART did not appear in the first draft of Artificial Condition, but in a rewrite it appeared and "tried to hijack the story" which. Yeah.
picturing the Perihelion crew after Peri returns from its cargo run and admits to having met a rogue SecUnit and helping it. they can hear the fondness in its undertones, and all exchange glances and secret smiles but let it go.
a couple weeks later, they've got a load of students and the news comes through about Milu, an abandoned terraforming situation they'd been keeping an eye on, with the GoodNightLander team freshly rescued by an unfamiliar SecUnit. the students are buzzing, but Peri doesn't comment and nobody on the crew thinks much of it, though it's certainly unusual to say the least.
then another few weeks pass, and there's a big newsburst about a non-corporate political leader getting abducted by a corporation, and yet another SecUnit involved in her rescue. Seth is like, "There sure are a lot of SecUnits in the news lately, Peri, must be making you miss your friend. I wonder what it's doing?"
And Peri is there, frantically stuffing the videos and stills of Murderbot pulled from the newsburst into a hidden storage folder titled ART+Murderbot4eva, going, hmm no idea. *whistles nonchalantly* Anyway, how about we go investigate this newly rediscovered lost system the corporates have their eye on? Surely there's nothing that could go wrong--

I probably should have just stopped talking, but I didn’t want to hurt Amena’s feelings.
Network Effect, pg. 182-183
Fell asleep after playing Subnautica and relistening to Murderbot; consequently had a weird dream. ANYWAY, I need someone to write a Subnautica/Murderbot crossover immediately, I'll give you so many seashells and pinecones in gratitude, I swear.
Never in a million years could I have imagined this guy being cast as Murderbot.

Apologies to all fans of the actor, I'm sure he's very talented, however I have smashed the nearest window and escaped into the night.
murderbot tv adaptation will be my 9/11
Hey I'm back my opinions have developed more. Things I have done: learned more about Skarsgård and discussed the casting with a friend who only knows about Murderbot from me (who does a mediocre job at pretending to care).
We know SecUnits are all the same build, because changing its height by a centimeter took it out of standard parameters. And SecUnits have to be large, because of the general purpose of existence. They need to intimidate, they need to carry big shit, etc. Obviously when it comes to bot-power, size is not an indicator for strength, but size does make a difference in maneuverability. It's way more efficient to have someone the size of a generic male action hero fighting hostile fauna and doing crowd control than a twink.
So, build wise, I feel like obviously SecUnits are going to lean a bit more toward the masculine side of things. Facial structure, I think, ultimately doesn't matter. Not to it, and it shouldn't to us either. I almost would say Murderbot would be more irritated about people caring so much about wha its face looks like, because we shouldn't be looking at its face anyway.
So when I say I'm worried about Skarsgård playing Murderbot, I'm not upset that it's being played by some very cis guy. I'm disappointed its going to be played by such a white guy (I've bought into all the fan art I've seen of it looking more Asian, since it said its 'generic human' and the two (irl present day, and therefore not necessarily relevant but it absolutely is) countries are both Asian countries.
What I'm worried about is how the casting is going to affect the genre and the expected target audience. I'm concerned about people thirsting for Murderbot. I'm worried about Murderbot being perceived as a man by the influx of fans this show will inevitably bring in.
But genuinely, the more I learn about Skarsgård, see scenes of his work, I think he wasn't the worst white guy to pick.
murderbot's primary combat tactic is to go up a wall. that's its favorite move. no one ever sees it coming, man. its second favorite combat tactic is to body tackle entities in the face. nothing on or off the planet is funnier than murderbot fighting like a flying squirrel

i've seen this scene illustrated a bunch of times by now, but let me add my 3-year-old cake to the buffet table :]
Another angst idea, this time for the Murderbot series. (MCD)
Something has seized physical control of MB and is causing it to rampage while MB is basically stuck in its own head.
The only thing it can do is to call out warnings or for help over the feed.
MB manages to connect to ART and beg it to stop it.
The only problem is that ART is so far away and there’s no systems around except MB that ART has any control over.
The only way for ART to stop MB is to fry its systems.
ART doesn’t want to do it but MB is distraught and begging it to stop it because it’s in the middle of massacring its humans and tells ART to stop it by any means necessary.
ART caves.
It reaches out into MB’s systems, sharing the space like they have done before, allowing ART to feel what MB does.
MB’s head feels like it’s underwater, and systems go dark as ART cuts them off from MB’s awareness.
The pain, vision, and sense of time all fade away.
It’s just MB and ART alone in the nothingness, plunging MB into an artificial calm.
It reminds MB of when it had been held when it was too injured to walk on its own.
ART says goodbye.
And pulls the trigger.
ART had already cut off MB’s ability to feel pain, so it didn’t feel the electricity shooting through its systems, frying organic and inorganic parts alike.
One moment Murderbot had been floating in the digital void, and the next there was no more Murderbot to feel anything at all.
On the planet below, MB’s body collapsed.
ART would never completely forgive itself.

which non-human entity from the murderbot diaries are you?
i had so much fun with this uquiz by @homosekularnost that i created my own :) [art: cover art from the estonian edition of AC (illustrated by liis roden)]
