Developing Diverse Characters...
...is hard. About a week ago, I started doing character development for a series I really want to write. The trouble with this is that I have been trying, with some difficulty, to invent a plethora of ethnically and sexually diverse characters. As a white, formerly sheltered, bisexual young woman, I've realized just how hard this is going to be for me. A few issues I've realised are:
I am white, which means I don't have a full grasp on what it's like to be a person of color in 21st century America, let alone a queer person of color in 21st century America.
I'm only halfway out of the closet. I've told some people about my sexuality (they were all, thankfully, very accepting) but I still hesitate to tell others. Because of this, I have not experienced the same criticism and hate that other members of the LGBTQ+ community have and therefore, I will likely get it all wrong.
I grew up in a very sheltered home and I mean sheltered as in, wasn't allowed to watch anything but Little Einsteins, Bob the Builder, and VeggieTales (bit of an exaggeration but you get the point). Despite the blinders having been removed in recent years, I'm still figuring some things out.
Then there's the issue of asking myself the question of if I'm including too much diversity. Nearly every character I've worked on so far is included somewhere among the LGBTQ+ community and while my aim is to cover a broad spectrum of sexual and romantic orientations, ethnicities, and lifestyles, the worry that I'm doing too much still creeps up on me.
And those among many others.
While it may stand to reason that, with enough research, it is possible to portray a mostly lifelike representation of everything I'd like to include, I always strive for the utmost accuracy in my writing. That, and I know I fall spectacularly short of the mark sometimes. All that being said, my goal would be to spread awareness while simultaneously not misrepresenting or offending any group or private individual. Of course, I do recognize that someone will get offended, no doubt. And I recognize that no one is perfect in any sense of the word.
Still, I hold to my claim: developing diverse characters is hard.
HELLO TUMBLR!! IN NEED OF SOME HELP RIGHT NOW!! PLEASE REPLY TO THIS WITH LINKS TO DIFFERENT DONATIONS/PETITIONS HELPING LGBTQIA+ AND POC (HOPEFULLY BOTH, PLEASE!)
I AM SEVERELY SORRY FOR THE CROSS-TAGGING!! I REALLY NEED THIS RIGHT NOW!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
One of the most common reasons I hear for people being against abortion is because “life is sacred.”
Really? Since when? When has life ever been sacred in this country?
If life is sacred, how come we don’t have universal healthcare?
If life is sacred, how come we don’t pass comprehensive gun laws so first graders don’t get gunned down in their classrooms?
If life is sacred, why don’t we offer paid maternal leave so mothers can actually take care of the babies that you are now forcing them to have?
If life is sacred, how come we don’t bat an eye when the police murder black kids?
If life is sacred, why do we have the highest maternal death rate in the developed world, which is only going to increase now that women are being forced to give birth?
If life is sacred, why is the death penalty even still a thing?
If life is sacred, why are we still encouraging violence against the LGBTQ+ community?
Life has literally never been sacred in this country. Maybe anti-choicers like to pretend that it is because it makes them feel righteous when in reality, they’re just misogynistic pieces of shit, but it’s not. And as long as psychotic, reactionary morons continue to steal power undemocratically and make decisions that the majority of us do not want, it never will be.
This is why everyone needs to vote for Kamala Harris in November.
okay man look, I LOVE life is strange. #1 hyperfixation, but it needs WAYYY more POC. like istg, theres like FIVE black people in the entire game series, and then when they make a story about two MEXICAN boys, they dont even fucking follow up on it AT ALL? look, I'm just saying, there needs to be HELLA more representation imo.

But then he had to go and mess with my heart. Had to listen to everything I say, with his endless optimism and teasing that accompanied him. One moment, I was so sure that I’d never fall for him, and the next moment, I find out that I do.
How I got from that point to this point, I still can’t figure out.
Diversity is important in your stories chat!! You are the author and it is your job to make sure that your readers feel represented!!!!! Do research on the culture of you characters of colour, too! Make your main character Bangladeshi!! Make the good queen Argentinian! Make your love interest Vietnamese!! Make your evil guy British! Make your found family trope's father Nigerian!! Make dystopian stories about poc, because their real life story needs to be told. Never forget that writing down a few words, drawing in a different shade, can truly and positively affect someone. (I'm basically white so poc feel free to give me notes lol)
white people go like “is anyone going to redesign this nonhuman evil character as a poc?” and not wait for an answer
Transphobia, cisnormativity and gender binary: The racism behind the anti-transness, specially nonbinary transness.
If you think for a second, the idea of the cisnormative gender binary are completely eurocentric: Not only because of the many amerindigenous communities who have Two-Spirits as a third gender, because there are many non white/non european ethnic groups who have, not only three, but more than three gender identities. Ethnic groups that existed for centuries, if not for millennias!
This means that gender binary, transphobia and cisnormativity are completely eurocentric. Oh, wait! Even better yet: transphobia, cisnormativity and gender binary are completely racist.
Observe how transphobes commonly mock and demonize trans people. How do you think these mfs would react to cultures and ethnic groups who don't have, nor accept the cisnormative gender binary? It's obvious that they'd react just like their colonizer ancestors; by demonizing and demoralizing these cultures to a whole.
Gender binary and cisnormativity have an important role on treating non white cultures as inferior. Rejecting gender as a social phenomenon = rejecting gender as a cultural phenomenon.
If you think that trans people are mentally ill, delusional or disgusting, you are obviously going to think these cultures are inferior for having more than 2 genders.
That is the reason why being anti-trans and a person of colour at the same time is such a shot on your own feet. You are a descendant of these people, in the end, you are going to get demonized altogether. So don't try to assimilate to think you are accepted.
Long story short: Accepting the gender binary, cisnormativity and/or being a transphobe in general is racism. Because you're not only demonizing random people, you are going to be demonizing cultures also.
Honestly, non-white people should come back to Tumblr, but idk how we gon do it, cuz ppl from sites like tiktok, twitter, etc., would cause a huge cultural shock that would lead to huge discourses and white ppl would just blame non-white people for it, because yeah, white folks love to be softcore racists and then play victim.
!!!!
POC solidarity is epic.
Asians, Africans, Latinos, and Indigenous People all standing up for one another is awesome and we need more of it. Racists will often try to pit us against one another, but we have to recognize the importance of standing together and fighting for equality for all of us.
So I stumbled through the Barbie aisle at Walmart the other day…
…and y'all, I almost cried. Just look at these. LOOK AT THEM.

Shoutout to nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, etc. people!
Shoutout to POC trans people!
Shoutout to disabled trans people!
Shoutout to closeted trans people!
Shoutout to all the trans people of our past who paved the way for us!
And let's remember all the trans people who've died trying to life their life as their true selves. They won't be forgotten, and their impact will forever be with us.
So since I apparently have followers now despite making one (1) post ever lol folks imma ghost imma poltergeist and theres no exorcising me now
anyways I have a question. So, I do ceramics, yes like pottery, yes like bowls and plates and stuff, yes like the glaze your own ceramic unicorn/moon/dragon stores except unlike those of you who’ve visited those stores after the age of 15 I am not a coward and make my own shit.
But ANYWAYS I made a pot that looks kind of like the one in the background of
THIS \/ photo
So I personally am not a person of color unless italian counts i think emphasis on think I have not studied my family history extensively.
but I was going to try making a lid for that pot that would be shaped and look like a cobra that had risen from a coil and was ready to strike. I was going to call it snake charmer.
BUT THEN I had the thought ‘is that name racist’ ‘ is that a stereotype?!’ ‘is the idea of a ”snake charmer” a negative stereotype’ ‘would this be super racist to name something’
so please help me out here I have no idea if i should
— a) scrap the lid idea and go with like an octopus or something
— b) try my best (very possibly will fail)
so tell me how you feel about the idea folks I don’t want to offend people I’ve got nothing against.
i love these gays ( coming from a lesbian )
