Meilin Lee and her mother Ming from Turning Red (Canada)
I watched Turning Red and that scene were Ming showed Devon Mei's drawings had resurfaced my own embarrassing and highly similar moment from middle school.
I had a crush on a boy who was probably a year ahead of me, who at first, I had no intention of ever getting with. I honestly thought he was weird when I first met him. But as the school year dragged on...something happened.
I had found myself daydreaming and fantasizing about him. And, yes, thirteen year old me did draw "fanart" of myself and him just like Mei had when she drew herself with Devon.
I was fortunate enough that my mom never saw those drawings. However....my bullies did.
They had gotten hold of my sketchbook while I had left class to use the little girl's room. And not only did they show their group of friends the drawings....they actually showed my crush the drawings, despite my hardest to get the book away from them.
He looked from all the drawings to me, with his expression morphing more and more into a "What the hell?" expression mixed with that surprised yet slightly confused "You like me?" expression.
Of course I, being only 13 at the time, had gotten so embarrassed at that point that I had done the only thing I was able to think of. Run.
I had tucked tail and ran to the other side of campus, and had hid away until a teacher saw me(and heard me) crying from embarrassment.
To spare you all the details, the bullies were never punished for causing me years of embarrassment that followed me all the way to high school. My crush became fully aware of my feelings for him in the worst possible way, and had started avoiding me every time we'd see each other around campus.
So to the people say that Devon's reaction to Mei's drawings were out of line for how he looked at her with shock and disbelief that a 13 year old girl would draw him and her in a fantasized relationship, and say "Oh, he should have been flattered that a young girl would even find him attractive enough to do such a thing!" You need to ask yourself these questions:
How would you feel if you were a 17 year old kid, and you had just learned that a middle schooler had drawn you and them together (and mostly drawings of you in general), and you never once spoken to this person, and you're suddenly facing the (very misdirected) wrath of an angry, overprotective parent?
I have a feeling you would feel a little uncomfortable too.
