So this is my first time writing smut and blurb. I had a dream of this happening and needed to write it down

Harry stood there not knowing what to do, he usually doesnt hug people but after the events that happened that day, maybe he could learn how to tolerate Y/N. See he had the reputation of being cold and strict to his workers that whoever would cross him expected to never see the light of day. However, this was Y/N.

The same Y/N who cried over ruining her interview because of a stained shirt. The same Y/N who got flustered over Harry's stare and words. I LOVE  this discourse about why people think harry is groundbreaking!! because he's marketed as Straight and For the Ladies, the things he does are very mainstream and widely popular, not to mention the fact that there hasn't been a Queer Icon for a decade or so to the level of Bowie or Mick Jagger or etc etc. So all of that combined means it looks like a Mainstream White Cishet Pop Ladiez Man is doing something groundbreaking, and although it is groundbreaking for that particular demographic, it's nothing new at all. Well, I've been meaning to make a post about this for ages and here's an excuse to do it!

First of all, let's look at the definition of a manager and what managers actually do: 

I think a lot of the Jeff hate comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of what a manager does. They're not some all-powerful being that controls every aspect of a celebrity's life and image. Their main responsibilities are pretty boring: scheduling, hiring and firing, planning, negotiating contracts, etc. Of course Jeff has a seat at the table when it comes to the issues with Harry's branding that we hate. I'm not saying he's free of all responsibility, but he's also not holding all the cards. That's why I use the term "tptb" or, "the powers that be" because there are SO MANY MORE people involved in this than just Jeff. 

Ok, now I will address each of the paragraphs one by one.

1. Why would I hate Jeff for being good at his job? Harry has had incredible success and is accomplishing everything a fan could dream of for their fav. As far as commercial success and general public recognition go, I only WISH that the other boys had a manager like Jeff. Harry's presence on SNL, the Late Late Show, and other fun shows and interviews is because of Jeff! Someone had to book those shows, right? That's a manager's job! And I don't hate Jeff for that, in fact, I love getting content from Harry, so I'm GRATEFUL for that! 

2. Although Jeff definitely has some say in Harry's public image and the things printed about him, the main responsibility of that goes to Harry's PR team, (which, by the way, is also excellent.) The way a PR team operates varies greatly, but oftentimes it's the label itself that does the promo, not the management, or it's some combination of the two. As always, yes, Jeff has a seat at the table in this. But he is not personally calling the Daily Mail asking them to print that Harry is a homewrecker. He's not laying in bed at night thinking up new lies to tell about Harry. There is a team of people involved in that process.

3. Now this is where it gets interesting. The mention of Columbia and Sony is important here because they all work together. They're not working independently. There are meetings with all of them and they move forward together. In fact, in many cases, the manager is supposed to fight for the artist when in negotiations with the label. The manager and the artist are supposed to be on the same side here.

The thing about being "the androgynous singer who dates models" or having an ambiguous sexual orientation is that I honestly think this is the best situation we could have with Harry, given the circumstances. Think about it. For five years, we've had a Very Heterosexual Womanizer Harry who sleeps with ten girls a week. Now as a solo artist, it's like that still exists, but the volume has been turned down like 70%. Harry can't exactly come out as gay the second he leaves the band. 1, it would look weird to completely do a 180 the minute he leaves. He was setting up to be more open about his sexuality and more expressive with himself towards the end of the band ("not that important") and we even see a progression in his clothing style from 2015 to now. 2, he's tied up in all sorts of contracts that would prevent him from being able to just say "I'M GAY!!" and not to mention how it would completely undermine the womanizer image they'd worked so hard to give him. (and would lose them their biggest moneymaking tool: highly publicized fauxmances).  

So imagine you're Jeff. You've been handed this kid whose main selling point is his womanizer personality despite him being in a monogamous gay relationship for 5 years. Harry wants to get out of the strict closeting he's been in for so long, so he goes out of his way to find someone who will give him what he wants. (Remember, Harry sought out Jeff. They hung out for a while before the band even broke up. He was shopping around for better management.) How could you possibly give him what he wants (to be free of closeting) while still maintaining a believable narrative to the gp?? The best possible solution is to let him be free with his self expression, be "unlabeled," and have some winter girlfriends (much less publicized than, say, haylor) to give some justification about who his songs are about. I think Jeff is doing the best he can with the circumstances given to him, and I dare you to figure out a better way to make your client AND your boss (tptb) happy. So yes, before he's Harry's friend, he is his manager, and he has to do the best he can with what he's given. And yes, I do think they're friends at least at a professional level. I mean look at this: 

4. This last point is the most important. Yep, I dislike Jeff because he is a capitalist. The Azoffs are problematic af for lots of reasons. I hate the system as well, but unfortunately, the system still exists (although I have hopes that our boys will burn it to the ground) and under The System, Harry's about as well off as it's possible to be. 

Wow you really just put into words how I'm feeling. I think the biggest reason I feel like Harry's team is failing is not commercially-- bc from a commercial standpoint he's skyrocketing. It's the fact that he basically has no personality anymore. He reminds me of this: 

It's like he's a racecar without a driver, just an empty shell with brand stickers all over the outside and someone in a tower is controlling the turns of the car, over and over again in circles while Harry is in the control room but without his hands on the controls, instead just giving suggestions. It feels like all we see of harry is this mannequin with brand stickers plastered all over him to the point that little of his real self shows through. In fact, whenever I watch videos of his concerts I'm always pleasantly surprised to find that he has a personality, as if i'm realizing it for the first time. 

Like you said, the fact that the same circle of people and brands keep revolving around him like he's dragging them on chains feels so off to me because it's not really who he his. His outfits, although fun, are getting predictable to the point where it almost feels like he's doing an impersonation of himself or dressing up in a costume of Harry Styles (tm). His social media posts are almost a parody of themselves ("GRAMMYS MARCH 2021" ?? ). And even when he speaks, it feels so distant and unrelatable because I almost can't believe it's really him.

His team is doing a fantastic job of promoting a BRAND. If Harry was a clothing line or a candle, it would be selling out like crazy and be on the front cover of Forbes. I get that celebrities have to have a brand, but at this point it feels like Harry has been reduced to nothing BUT a brand and I hate it.

I find it funny that nowadays your one of the few people who still think they do a shit job with Harry or don’t know how to handle him right. All I read are the same essays how perfect they are for him

They have never have been, they have big connections because Irving Azoff is a legend, so they get big gigs because of that and because Harry has a lot of star power and everyone wants him to do stuff. They are lucky he is on high demand and people want him because he is harry styles(tm) but at the same time they are incapable of get all these opportunity and use his potential in the right way. If he was an indie artist, he’d be ruined with a team like that to be honest. I think the interests here lie on how much Harry can make them earn with his famous persona, he is now the big name they can flaunt around the industry and that’s all they care about. He works with a too small group of people who are always the same and say the same things over and over again, no attention is placed on his persona ever, it’s always either gossip and stunts or associations with people who have the same team or no association at all. He doesn’t do anything mainstream because they want to show him as ‘too good for this and that’, he doesn’t wear any clothes that are not gucci because of this one deal (which considering how handsome he is and how much people want to work with him, its kinda stupid he’s that tied to one brand at this point of his career but alas), he doesn’t collaborate with other artists that are not lizzo or stevie nicks ( i mean, great names but....we got it the first 20 times, thanks) his social media presence does not exist and when it does is super fake (except for a few glimpse of real harry here and there, see the 1D anniversary post). Probably the act like this so they have more control on him, or because they can’t do better than this or they don’t care as long as he earns money and power for them and their firm, i am not sure. They turned him into this walking advertisement for anyone but himself and everything he does is just publicity for this and that but never himself  and his art (see the grammys, where everyone and their dogs posted about it BUT him basically) and i get this is show business and everyone is an advertisement but it comes to a point when there HAS to be more than that on the table. I did read an interesting post a few years ago, saying his team does this with all the artists and especially harry (which is one of the 3 that actively works in their roster) because the deeper the connection is, the harder it is for him to leave cause he’d find himself ‘alone’ if everyone he had ever worked with is connected to his ‘old’ team. Someone as dynamic and eclectic as Harry is kind of wasted with these limited options his team offers, in my opinion and having a Vogue cover and a Grammy is good but it is not enough in 2021 especially if these amazing gigs are followed by shitty stunts and poor actions that reflects bad on him and his persona all the time. He describes himself as someone that never stays put, that always likes to venture into new fields and try new things and experiment with new stuff so I find it hard to believe he only wants to work with James Corden, Ben Winston and Gucci over and over again, something doesn’t add up here. Another bad thing that makes me fuming is that they want to make him an ‘American’ star so bad they forget harry is not even American. Bottom line is that he has a lot of opportunities and stuff thanks to his multiple talents and it’s infuriating to see it wasted because his team doesn’t know how to handle them and always turns them into sloppy jobs and bad stunts. 

what do you think about jeff being harry’s plus one at the grammys ? also what do you think about harry winning a grammy ? do you think it was fake and could literally care less about it , or do you chose to belive that it’s real ? (sorry , don’t mean to like as you so many questions but i really wanna know your take)

Honestly I didn't even realize that Jeff was harry's plus one.... are they genuinely that good of friends that Harry picked him over like... idk his mom? Does he not have any other friends? Could he not have brought his sister? Or maybe even Stevie Nicks (imagine how the press would eat that up) or idk what about his alleged GIRLFRIEND? It's very bizarre and it only further makes him seem inhuman and more like a walking talking brand deal. I can't help but wonder if this is Jeff further trying to insert himself into the narrative to become his OWN celebrity (like the new Simon Cowell maybe??) I mean, he's obviously seeking that kind of fame because he invited the paparazzi to his own wedding to push a stunt for one of his clients... like there's no way he'd do it if it was strictly for Harry's benefit only.

And as for the grammys, I do think Harry deserved it. I have no idea how the process works, but I'm sure there's a lot of exchanges of favors and wink wink nudge nudge type situations. The grammys are just another rigged award show, and I prefer to just celebrate when my favs win something rather than try to dissect how it happened.

this is what makes me so sad. because i literally, genuinely, don't know who harry is. he's basically become a walking billboard at this point, and his media image feels like a fabricated shell. i can't get inside, i can't see who he is or what he's thinking. his social media is nonexistent. his print interviews talk about a person i barely recognize. i feel so distant from him because i genuinely don't know anything about him beyond his 2015 self. and the more time goes on, the more he seems to be reshaped into a new person. it's like he's just a walking talking gucci suit and the real harry is at home somewhere, inaccessable and unrelatable. 

i don’t know who harry is. i simply know nothing about who he is post 2015. this is the product of incredible marketing but it’s also painful as a fan. we all love to claim we know our idols better than imaginable but do we really?? has he really let us into any part of who he is since the band went on hiatus?? what do we really know about who he is and how he’s changed or how he’s stayed the same since then??

the answer is next to nothing.

i think in part it has to do with how we get our information about him. seeing him on stage, in interviews, and in public always interacting with others gave us so much insight on how he is, not only with fans, but with the people he knows and loves personally. and that is so important in understanding a person. we constantly saw his comfortable banter around the boys and his friends gave him the time and had patience with his slow and careful manner of speaking. yeah, they teased him about it, but at the end of the day they gave him the chance to finish his thoughts and wouldn’t let interviewers move on until he said his piece.

vs the past five years he’s been alone in those interviews and alone onstage, alone meeting fans in public. he has always been kind. we know he is kind and loving and caring and truly good. but really what else have we learned?? kindness became his brand, the only thing people really know about him personally. when i fell in love with one direction, it was with five guys who made me feel like someone cared. who, just by being themselves and having genuine love for each other, made me feel a little less bad about my own relationships. they made me feel safe. that’s the harry i fell in love with. and this is not me saying i love harry any less, this is me saying i don’t even know who he is.

he has been marketed so specifically and so spectacularly to be this godlike figure that tptb want him to be and it’s working. i can only think of a couple interviews since hiatus began that don’t feel completely manufactured and halfhearted. the zane lowe one, we saw him talk about things that are important to him, talk about his priorities in forming close friendships, his goals and his outlook on life. but he also had to push stunts. in this interview we get a bit of the goofy sharp witted harry we know and love. but we also get the push of the “harry likes older blonde women” narrative.

basically, we can’t get harry content anymore with a stunt or fabricated narrative being shoved down our throats. he’s constantly being distanced from one direction and the idea of “harry styles from one direction” vs the new version that is “harry styles™️”. the more the people close to him push the idea of him being separate from his beginnings, the more people believe it, and the more it becomes true. we see this with kid harpoons recent words in this article from literally this morning.

but here’s the thing. harry has never said he’s pushing to remove himself from the connection to one direction. he has only spoken of the band with glowing praise, never succumbing to people pushing him for negative responses about his time in the band, the music they made, or any of the other boys. this vast difference between what harry says and what those around him and tptb want us to believe makes it hard to know who harry is at all. and that fucking blows.

This has been on my mind for a while. Yeah, one direction stans leaked a few songs/albums, but there's never been anything we found that we weren't supposed to see. Everything we were ever meant to see was practically shoved in our faces (cough- elenour- cough) The only thing we would have sluthed would be Larry, right? Much to think about...
