pro tip on how to explain the spn ending to your friends
Have them imagine an alternate ending for the Harry Potter saga: what if Ron died in book 6 and never got mentioned again? Imagine he had no funeral and he was never grieved by any of the characters.
After Harry kills Voldemort he starts planning to get a wizard career and finally rise to his full magic potential. First, he wants to visit the Dursleys and he falls off the stairs in their house. Hermione offers to heal him with magic but he says “he was always supposed to die in this staircase”. He promptly dies, right after a semi-romantic moment between him and his cousin. Nobody has time to attend his funreal because they’re busy with work (maybe?). Only Hermione and his owl show up.
Hermione moves on, gets a party wig and marries a man (but we never learn anything about him, his face is blurred). We do not know whether Hermione manages to follow her dreams and become the cleverest professor in all of Hogwarts, the details of her life are left out in favor of showing her son for some reason.
All of the other characters - the Weasleys, Luna, Neville, Draco, Snape and Dumbledore - are killed by Voldemort and then resurrected off screen, we never see them again.
Ginny’s arc is building up to have her be the love interest of one of the leads but then she’s just never mentioned again.
Harry reunites with his abusive adoptive family in heaven because he doesn’t want to meet his actual parents. He doesn’t want to see Ron either but he smiles when he hears that he’s here.
The last shot is just Daniel Radcliff waving at the drone camera, thanking everybody for coming to the movie theater, as a Katy Perry cover of the main theme plays in the background.

i think that maybe my main problem with supernatural’s ending is how both cas and dean got these massive monologues in what were supposedly moments where they had limited time and sam didn’t get to say a single word in his 30 second death scene. i feel like the ending could’ve been improved had these moments been shorter.
like imagine cas’s death scene in 15x18 had it been shorter. for example, dean and cas are locked in and dean says pretty much what he says already, and cas just looks at him and says something like, “when jack died, i made a deal with the empty. when i experience true happiness, the empty will be summoned, and it will come and take me.” cas meets dean’s eyes and softly says, “i love you, dean.” and kisses dean, before turning to face the empty and being taken.
for dean, it would be fairly similar to canon, just a lot shorter. in my ideal scenario, he would die a different way - i’m imagining dean being bitten by one of the vamps as he kills it, and begging sam to kill him before he can turn. dean would still die on his feet, and could end the same way, with the forehead touch, just this time with a knife in dean’s abdomen.
for sam, I would want to change his ending completely, although it would make an ok ending to me if we don’t see anymore of him (up until he reunites with dean in heaven) after he leaves the bunker for the last time, as to leave his ending open. it would be nice to have eileen there with him, maybe even holding his hand as he walks out, to give an idea of where his life goes after leaving the bunker, to get rid of the blurry wife and the debate surrounding the rest of his life.

I'm cleaning my pc so I'll keep posting stuff like this, I think everybody deserves to enjoy these aushaus
without having seen the finale yet it is my firm opinion that it would have been fine if sam died and dean moved on a la swan song

I think the thing that really still upsets me about the finale is just how clearly it wasn’t about trying to conclude the story in a satisfying manner. It wasn’t for fans who had watched the entire show. The finale was unabashedly made for the viewers that they lost over time. It was for that broader fanbase that watched the first two or three seasons and then got bored. It was for the people who would watch an episode here or there whenever there was nothing better on.
The objective of the finale was to be recognizable to the largest number of people possible, regardless of how empty that made it from a storytelling perspective.
Can’t have Jack there, that will confuse people. Better get rid of Cas too, just in case. Sam can’t be with Eileen, nobody knows Eileen. Go back to the basics: Look, Sam and Dean are hunting vampires! Dean has pie! Haha! Dean loves pie, remember? Oooh, look! The car! You always loved that car, didn’t you? It’s so cool. Here, have several minutes of Dean driving it. And the theme song! Yeah, Kansas!! You haven’t watched this show in 13 years but it’s just like you remember, huh? It doesn’t matter that you missed all those episodes, you know exactly what’s going on so you might as well stay tuned through the whole episode.

Jack didn’t save Cas, bacause he won’t be hands on, strength is in everyone, it’s Dean’s call to save Cas, and Jack will be there, as real and normal God, to help him be strong through all of it. But he won’t do it for him.

And you would dump a woman you love and marry someone else because (you think) your dead brother didn’t wanted you to marry the first lady???
