“Mingyu!” You wave to the tall boy standing near your block.
“Y/N!” He yells back, raising his hand in hello.
As you join him, he offers to help you with your computer bag, which you allow to happen reluctantly. He asks about your recent project, whereupon you regale him with the horrors of working on a constitutional and tax law assignment with slacking group members.
“You didn’t have to,” You say suddenly as you both begin walking to the campus cafe.
“What?”
“Pay me back for the tutoring, I mean — I did it for fun and you already knew most of it, you just needed a nudge to memorise it all.”
“It’s fine,” He waves you off. “I did well, so..”
“And if you didn’t do well?”
He shrugs. “No treat for you then. It’s your lucky day.”
You smack him on the chest. “Ow!”
“I know what I’m doing,” you insist, and he rolls his eyes playfully before suddenly yelling, “Last one to the cafe’s paying the next time we eat with Jeonghan!” He sprints off.
Jeonghan’s a bottomless hole. You’re not losing to the 6 foot over man and half your pay the next time Jeonghan thinks it's interesting to challenge who can eat the most pasta in one sitting.
“You’re on!”
“How you doing?” Minghao asks, hands in pockets as he walks down the path with Seungcheol.
“Eh.” Seungcheol murmurs in response.
“Hey,” Minghao says. “Seriously, are you good? You look like you’re surviving off instant food and coffee right now.”
“Just sleepy,” Seungcheol sighs, rubbing his eyes. “The new song assignment is kicking my ass.”
Minghao chuckles. “Sure. You’re not suffering from Y/N withdrawal, are you?”
He swiftly dodges a kick to the shin.
As planned, he checks his phone. “Crap!”
“What?” Seungcheol yawns.
“Can you grab a coffee for me? I’ll be right back, I need to pass some stuff to the library assistant on shift before me.”
“Are you on duty today?”
“Later," Minghao says. "But the fellow says it's urgent."
"Do you want me to go with you? We both work there, anyway." Seungcheol offers.
"No!" Minghao almost shouts, way louder than he intended. "I mean... nah, it's all good. Just help me order, I'll be back in ten minutes."
“Okay,” Seungcheol shrugs, clearly too tired to process his words. “What do you want? I’ll get it for you.”
“Just an Americano.” Minghao does not like Americanos.
“Alright, catch you in a bit. Hurry back.”
“Thanks. See ya.” Minghao walks back the way they came, but only a short distance out of sight, where he’s agreed to meet Mingyu after the accountancy kid drops you off.
“God, I’m so unfit.” You pant, all while Mingyu races ahead of you.
“YN, come on! Hurry!” The boy is currently gesturing towards you.
You launch toward him, shoving him playfully. “Why are your legs so damn long?!”
You’re too busy playfighting each other that you don’t notice that you’ve reached the cafe.
Seungcheol can’t believe his eyes.
You said you were busy with work. Not with play-wrestling the giant that gave him your number in the first place. Not with coming in the direction of the cafe where you had your first ‘date’ together.
It could have been the exhaustion, but he feels tears rising to his eyes, a frown tugging his lips down. You didn’t really want to spend time with him, did you?
He walks towards the cafe door, opens it and steps out, praying that miraculously, you both won’t see him.
“Oh! Seungcheol?” He stops in his tracks at the sound of your voice.
Great.
Mingyu begins raising a hand in greeting, but his smile drops when he sees Seungcheol’s forlorn expression. Slowly, the look of realisation dawns on his face as he processes what the scene looks like.
You, telling Seungcheol you weren’t free for a while, yet seen coming to the cafe with Mingyu. Him, grabbing your hands to wrestle them away as you tried punching his arm. You, head thrown back in laughter. Him, laughing just as loudly. And Seungcheol seeing it all.
It so looked like you and Mingyu were on a date.
He splutters and half-chokes. “Um-!”
“Bye,” Seungcheol mutters, expression one that you can’t quite place as he begins walking away.
“Seungcheol, it’s not what it looks like-” Mingyu begins.
“It’s whatever,” Seungcheol says wearily. “I have to go. See you guys around.”
He leaves, posture slumped, Mingyu speechless while you look on in bewilderment. “What on earth was that?”
“I messed up, that’s what.” Mingyu sighs. “Let’s go find Minghao.”
“…Who’s Minghao?”
“You WHAT?!” Minghao half-shouts.
“I swear-”
“No, no, no! You had one job. You’re not swearing on anything! You screwed it all up!” Minghao groans, rubbing his temples as he leans against the wall. “Great. He’ll feel even worse now.”
“I don’t…wait. Are you two saying you tried to meddle to get us together??” You ask, eyebrows raised.
“Clearly didn’t work.” Mingyu sighs.
“Whose fault is that?!” Minghao shoots at Mingyu, arms folded like an angry parent.
“We would have gotten together on our own,” You complain. “Now he’s misunderstanding this whole thing and he’s upset.”
“Uh, no! You wouldn’t!” Minghao interrupts, pointing at you. “He’s down so bad and so are you and you both are just wallowing-”
“Never mind that, what do I do now?” You sigh in misery. “He’s mad and it’s my fault…”
“No, it was me.” Mingyu sounds apologetic. “I made him misunderstand. Swear, I didn’t mean to.”
“Damn right, you did.” Minghao rolls his eyes. He gestures to you. “Go on and find him. Meanwhile, we'll try not to die when Jeonghan comes."
You tilt your head in confusion. “Jeonghan? What’s this got to..."
At the withering look Minghao gives you, as if to ask, "That's what you're really focusing on now?" You perk right back up. "Oh! Got it!” And then you’re racing off, leaving both boys behind.

“Please, please pick up.” You mutter, jabbing at the call icon on Seungcheol’s contact.
It’s interrupted by Jeonghan’s call. “Hey. How’s it going?”
“Bad,” You sigh sadly. “He isn’t picking up and I can’t get into any room in his building without a music student card.”
“Oh…” Jeonghan lets out a breath. “I’m with the other two. I’ll hit them for you, if it helps.”
“No, probably not right now,” You reply, but you hear two consecutive yelps of “Ow!” in the background. You laugh reluctantly. “Right, does Minghao know where he could be? Other than his block.”
There’s a shuffle, and Minghao’s voice comes on the phone. “Hey. Uhh...he’s usually up in his studio or at the library. Or else the garden downstairs of the library. You went there yet?”
“No,” You say. “I panicked and didn’t even think about the library. I went straight to his block. I’ll go there now.”
He hums in agreement and you hang up, running in the direction of the library.
Seungcheol is full-on moping and sulking. He knows he shouldn’t, since you’re not technically together, but he thought this was going so well.
He was absolutely whipped for you, he could easily admit. When you said you were busy, he felt sad that he couldn’t share your stress and meet you to comfort you.
The day after you went out with him for the very first time, he went to the library for his shift and smiled the whole day. Minghao told him he needed help, and he didn’t even get offended.
And now… Seungcheol doesn’t know what to feel. His phone has been buzzing for a while, and he knows it’s probably Minghao asking where the hell he’s gone. Minghao must have been so confused when he came back to the cafe for Seungcheol to just disappear.
He turns his phone over when he gets a call, and he sees your name flashing on his screen. He sighs and leans back against the headboard of his bed.
His hand reaches for his phone… and pauses. The vibration stops after a while, and when he opens up his phone, he sees five missed calls from you, and about twenty texts, from you and Minghao.
His fingers hover over your contact, and he makes his decision. He turns the phone back face down, lying down and wrapping himself in his blanket.
“He’s not here!” You’re half-crying into the phone.
“None of those places?”
“None!”
“Maybe he’s at the dorm.” Minghao says. “I’ll go back there and see. You can’t go in the boys’ dorm anyway.”
“Okay, call me.”
Jeonghan and Mingyu turn up to bring you back to your dorm, and when they see your eyes, red and a little swollen with crying, they’re quick to comfort you.
“Don’t cry.” Jeonghan coos, swiping at your cheeks. "You didn't know. It was an honest mistake.”
Mingyu seems worse off than you, starting to sniffle slightly after he sees your tears. “I’m sorry!” He babbles. “I didn’t mean to make him misunderstand — I feel awful. Wasn't my intention, promise!”
“You two, don’t cry!” Jeonghan laughs, pulling you both into a hug. “It’s okay! Minghao’s gonna find him and we’ll make sure you both talk. Don’t — oh, man, my shirt!” He switches up and starts complaining as Mingyu starts full-on crying into his shoulder.
After they walk you back, you hug them in thanks, and they rock you back and forth to stop your tears.
At least, as funny as it looked, you had two friends who would cry with you, and another new friend who would walk around the whole school just to find the boy you were irrevocably head over heels for.
“This gotta stop.” Minghao says, leaning against the doorframe of Seungcheol’s room.
“What?” Seungcheol sniffles. He’s under his blankets, music playing in the background to distract him. He has his lyric notebook in front of him and he’s trying to write, but he keeps dropping his pen and leaning back, mouth turned down in a semi-permanent frown.
“The running off. I was making calls and running around, you know?” Minghao stretches and winces when his back cracks.
“Mhmm.”
“It was a misunderstanding, Cheol.”
At that, he looks up. “Huh?”
“It was..one of our ideas. Jeonghan and Mingyu and me.”
Seungcheol wipes his tears and sits up straight. “What’re you talking about?”
“We may or may not have wanted to speed you two up. So we may or may not have made a plan to get you both to the cafe. We’re sorry for that. But she isn’t dating Mingyu, idiot.”
Seungcheol can’t believe his ears now. “You what?!”
Minghao shrugs. “No one guessed you’d misunderstand and disappear on us. Y/N’s been panicking for hours. Cried once on the phone.”
“She cried?” Seungcheol looks panicky. Then his eyes narrow. “So you three were meddling-”
“Oh my god you two are exactly the same,” Minghao groans. “We’re sorry! But you two were crushing on each other so bad and none of you were doing anything about confessing!”
“We would have gotten together on our own!” Seungcheol cries out. “Don’t people usually go out a few times before getting together for real?”
“Match made in heaven, really,” Minghao shakes his head. “You were so excited for the study date— just studying! And Jeonghan told me Y/N wouldn’t shut up about it either. And I know you, you would never confess on your own."
Seungcheol flops back down on his bed. “She hates me now. I ran off before I let her explain.”
“It’s alright, she doesn't hate you. She feels more sorry than anything.”
“What?! What do you mean? No, no, no! I should be sorry!” Seungcheol cries out in a panic again, shoving his head in his hands and melting down.
Minghao leaves his room in a frustrated huff.

"Hello?"
“Hey...I’m downstairs.”
“Okay, wait for me. I’ll be right down.”
“Hey,” Seungcheol says, hair blowing in the gentle breeze.
“Hey you.” You reply quietly, walking over to take a seat on the bench next to him.
He sees your mildly red eyes and frowns, upset. “I’m sorry.”
Your head jerks up at that. “What?” You ask incredulously. “Why are you apologising? You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“For running off like that.” He sighs. “I must have made you upset.”
“I get it, Cheol.” You place a hand on his. “I get why you misunderstood and I’m sorry for that too-”
“No, no! Don’t be sorry! You didn’t know. And I figured I was overreacting because you didn’t feel the-” He stops himself, embarrassed.
“What did you say?” You ask, eyes wide.
“N-nothing!”
“No, tell me. What were you going to say?” You insist.
“I..I mean I like you a lot and I was jealous so that’s why I overreacted! And I know you maybe don’t feel the same so you got confused about why I was so angry and I swear I didn’t want to tell you this way-” He puts his head in his hands.
“Seungcheol-”
“And you can ignore me for the rest of my life! I won’t be mad and I’m literally so sorry you have to hear this-”
“Seungcheol!” You take his shoulders to make him look at you.
“H-huh?”
“Seungcheol… who told you that… I don’t feel the same?” You ask, trying not to smile at his utterly bewildered expression.
“What?”
“I’m not sure if anyone’s told you, and by that I mean Han or Gyu,” you continue, slightly smiling now. “I don’t go out with people I’m not interested in.”
“You-”
“I can literally show you my texts with Han,” you say, shrugging. “I called you the cute library boy at the start, and I freaked out after we had breakfast the other day.”
"But-"
"And the bouquet you got me," You carry on, "The flowers are still alive and just as pretty. I ordered a vase for them, and it came late so I was so worried they were gonna wilt before I got it. I arranged it really nicely, you know."
He blushes at the mention of the flowers, and you laugh at how red his ears have gone. “…Same. The freaking out, I mean,” he admits shyly. “Minghao blocked me after that and didn’t talk to me because I wouldn’t shut up.”
“You’re cute!” You let out a giggle, and reach out to pinch his beetroot-coloured cheeks.
“Stop it,” He pouts. “I still got the wrong idea and it was silly of me not to just ask.”
“Don’t be silly.” You wave his apology off. “I made you misunderstand. So we're even. We were just both being idiots.”
“I’m your idiot.” He suddenly says, and as if it was even possible, you swear he blushes even more. But before he can retract what he said, you nod confidently, reaching out to hug him. He immediately pulls you in, rocking you back and forth and smoothing out your hair.
“Yep,” you say, arms wrapping around his middle. “You’re my idiot. I’m your idiot, too. If we’re both going to be idiots, we may as well be together.”
“So let’s get together,” he says as he suddenly pulls away, eyes wide, in a sudden burst of confidence. A couple days from now, he will scream into his pillow in embarrassment upon recollection. But for now, his smile is so wide it’s hurting his cheeks.
He leans forward, his grin now turning a bit cheeky.
“I hope you have no objections?”
The smile and accompanying nod you give in return is so bright, it beats any sun and moon and gold and promise he’s ever seen.
The sound of your laughter carries on as you launch yourself into his awaiting arms. His eyes squeeze shut as he entwines himself around you, soaking in the bliss and the joy that is you both, together.
Seungcheol's sitting down at his desk. He just made sure you got into the building safely before he trekked back to his own.
The inspiration for his song hits him as soon as remembers the look on your face. The lyrics he pens down in his notebook flow through him like water, so easily and so smoothly it's like he always knew it in the back of his head and in his heart.
But he didn't, actually, not until now. But he knows he'll never forget.
The flowers look a little more vibrant to you. Alive, breathing, just being, even as they sit in your vase that came late. You never knew flowers could look this beautiful.
Maybe the magic had a little to do with the sender.
You snap a photo of the flowers again for memory's sake, their shadows dancing against the wall in your darkened room. When you look at the photo, they're beautiful, but they're not the same as the ones you're seeing. You laugh out in relief and joy, and lay back on your bed, eyes already closing from the excitement of tonight.
It's okay if you didn't see it in the photo. You didn't need a photo to remember it, anyway. You'd never forget.

yn: a pediatrician in the city. (physical appearance is up to you!). ambitious, hardworking and determined to come on top, your emotions have taken a backseat for much of your life, which is why you can be cold and calculating at times. your parents no longer around because of a freak accident, you can be emotionally sensitive, with a sharp tongue on the topic of family. deep down, you're kind and affectionate, you just show it a little differently.
chanyeol: yn’s close friend and old crush from university. now a famous tv producer and presenter, this gentle giant is constantly in search of a muse to kickstart his next project. stumbles into the idyllic town to film a program after going in the wrong direction, and fits in just perfectly before long. also ends up becoming wonwoo’s friendly rival (🥲)
delia: yn's best friend forever!! a pediatric nurse by profession, she's one of the only people who can tame yn down when she's being haughty/angry. moves to the town to work with yn, and sometimes acts as the neutral party between yn and the villagers. gets along very well with other people, she's a complete E. she's a little ditzy, but a lovely person.
miss kim: yn’s landlord. divorced with a child, she runs a small bookshop in the village. as the unspoken village head, she handles the village’s admin matters. her ex-husband, mr woo, lives in the village too and works in the village bank. she shares her son's custody with him.
grandma lee: affectionately called ‘grandma’ by everyone, she’s seen wonwoo through most of his life, his ups, downs, and everything in between, except for the three years when he left town. a clever, patient, and kindhearted woman, she often knows what everyone needs before they do.
