Hallowstale background info:

A world were most of the main cast are human, able to transform into monsters via masks that they wear. And when Frisk falls down, it is nothing but genocide timelines, until Sanse, Flowey, Chara, and a new mysterious soul, figure out a way to stop Frisk, and force a pacifist run, once and for all.

(Quick note, this is a mostly gender-bent universe. I say mostly because this universe is my most inclusive, so some characters are Nonbinary or Trans, but the basic sex of the cis characters are swapped.)

In this world, not only are there Monsters and Humans, but Monster-Humans (M-Hs), and Souls Mages.

M-hs are children born human, with a monster form transformation. When the child turn 5 years old, a package will magically show up at their front door with a mask inside. The mask is a representation of their monster form. When the owner of the mask wears it, they turn into their monster form.

A m-h's soul consists of a monster soul inside of a human soul. The monster form has a longer life span than that of their human form. When an m-h dies in their human form, their mask can be placed on them, forcing their body to turn into a monster as their human soul shatters, leaving that m-h to fully become a monster (a process known as monstercation). When their monster soul is killed, the m-h will simply dust as, to reach the monster soul, their human soul must also be peirced. Some m-hs can have two human soul traits, and, very rarely, three soul traits.

The masks of the m-hs are indestructible and can't be lost. Upon the mask being more than 50 feet away from the owner, it will magically appear near the owner.

A m-h can cast magic. However, they can only cast magic in their monster forms.

Soul mages (SMs) are humans who have access to their soul trait's magic. Soul mages are fairly rare and commonly infertile.

Mt. Ebott is encircled by a rural community that houses a cult, known as the Purity of Soul. It was founded by soul mages from each of the attributes. The cult believes that monsters and m-hs are impure, inferior, and have no right to live in their perfect world.

42 years ago, before Frisk fell down, the followers of Purity of Soul (PoS) enacted a monster massacre. They light buildings aflame, they killed monsters, m-hs, and human sympathizers. Torel and his wife Asgore gathered and led the survivors to one of the entrances of Mt. Ebott. The Soul Mage leaders of the PoS created a barrier around the two entrances into Mt. Ebott, trapping everyone inside. The only way out is to use 7 Soul Mages, each one being a different soul type, to break the barrier. The PoS, believing the 'tainted' to soon starve in the mountain, leave to go about their daily lives. However, there were already animal-like monster creatures living within the intricate cave systems, along with the River Person. They help the survivors build a new home in the mountain. The survivors also appointed Torel and Asgore, the leaders of the Underground.

A year or two later, as some children in the community received monster masks, the PoS was horrified to learn that m-hs could be born of two human parents. And even more, some unknowing monster from elsewhere on the globe would move in for cheap housing and relative closeness to the city while remaining suburban. A ruling was stated that any monster is to be captured, m-h children are to be brought forth to the council to be "educated," and anyone who tries to hide either will be killed. In reality, all are killed. Parents who wind up having m-h children do their best to hide that truth or flee to one of the Mt. Ebott entrances and live in the Underground. Some of those m-h children will grow up to be brainwashed into despising their monster half. Moving away quickly became futile, as rumors would spread that the family are sympathizers and sentenced to death.

Those who were sentenced to death were paraded up to the top of Mt. Ebott (right before the Ruins entrance). Everyone else in the community is required to attend and watch. They would then kill the guilty party, dumping their remains down the hole.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The two laws were written as follows:
- Report any monster-humans so they can be educated and get help.
- Any humans caught harboring monster-humans, or monsters from outside the community, will be given the highest form of punishment: death by execution.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I think that's it for now.

More stories will be coming out, including character personal stories/information, and artwork.

There will be a special story coming out that would be this au's Gaster (and later Sanse's) journal.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once there was a small community village at the base of Mount Ebott. This was the village both Asgore and Torel were born in. The two were childhood friends since forever. The two lived right next door from each other, and it would always be one going to the other's house to play. They never were found apart. When one of them got into trouble, the other would somehow know and appear right by their side to help out. They helped each other out. They celebrated each other's victories, and mourned each other's losses. One might think they were the same. However, they did have their own preferences. Asgore loved play outside, while Torel loved to remain indoors. Asgore loved to get dirty, but Torel was a massive clean freak. However, for the other, they would put aside their dislike for a little fun, or they would make a compromise. Their togetherness was only solidified more when they found out that their monster masks were both goat monsters.
When Asgore and Torel were 14 and 12 respectively, there was a new kid that moved into their neighborhood. More accurately, a new kid was adopted into a family that lived right beside their houses. This was a couple that had been trying to conceive a child, but one of the parents were infertile. The child that they had adopted stood out to the other two children, because she was like them. For Torel, he had a strong sense that she would make a great friend, and Asgore could sense want for friends. So they devised a plan. They would have a day of fun filled activities, and befriend her. And it worked, after a little quick improvisation of their, admittedly, not well though out plan. And the three of them would be thick as thieves.
When Asgore and Torel were 16 and 14 respectively, a group of seven strangers were welcomed into the community village. They described how they were ostracized and run out of their previous home. Asgore could tell that they were lying about something and distrusted them, but any attempts at telling any adults was shot down and ridiculed. Torel, however, was more inclined to trust the new folks and give them a chance. Torel managed to get Asgore to give trust to them and hope Asgore was reading them wrong.
As the community village grew, the seven soul mages came into power of their own as leaders, protectors, advisors, and mentors. They erected a religious sect, where they started to gain a cult following. They spread ideologies of how monster souls, and monster-human souls were tainted. They would state how humans are powerless against beings with magic and physical prowess unless they were to stick together, and stick with the soul mage council. There were several people who didn't agree with their ideology but left them alone as they had done so much good, so some people were able to overlook it. Some people rebeled against them, but they only used it to their advantage to spread the rumor that monsters and monster-humans will try to keep any power they have over humans as possible, and that the humans that rebel alongside them are misguided and tricked or forced to helping them.
Some monsters and monster-humans moved out, as they felt threatened by this new religious movement. Many didn't, either because they couldn't afford to (as the housing was made so cheap there), they were holding on to nostalgia of growing up there, or they thought they could ignore the pressing issue and the problem will just go away.
When Asgore turned 20, she bought her own house with Torel to split the cost. Which was just in time, because Gaster's family was wanting to move, and Gaster didn't. So Torel and Asgore acquired a custody form for Gaster with her parents' permission, so Gaster could stay with them instead of moving out. Asgore got a job as a florist while studying law to maybe combat what is going on with the PoS in a political sense. Torel got a job as a teacher at the Ebott Meadow elementary school, working his way to becoming principle. And all the while they made sure to get Gaster into Rune University for her Doctorate in Soul Science.
When Asgore was 23, Toril 21, the 7 soul mages of the Purity of Soul lead a monster massacre late in the night. Them and their followers killed monsters, monster-humans, and any human sympathizers; they set houses on fire, looted, and destroyed personal belongings. All the while blocking off any exists. Asgore and Torel were quick to gather any survivors and lead them to a well known cave entrance in Ebott Mountain. Asgore lead from the front, and Torel held up the rear. In the mountain, they met this peculiar being that called themself the River Person. They gave the survivors permission to cohabit the mountain cave system with the monsters that already lived there. The 7 soul mages soon erected a barrier, one that would need 7 soul mages of the different soul types to break it, thinking that the inhabitants will die of starvations but wanting to be precautious.
The survivors moved into the Ruins, a kingdom within the mountain where all the old inhabitants have died out. Over time, they would expand and build housing in the different biomes. When electricity was established, Asgore managed to finish up their law degree. Asgore and Torel were constantly looked to for guidance and hope to the point that they became the unofficial appointed leaders of the Underground. They would finally wed, and later on conceive a child named Asriel, a full monster. Torel and Asgore would split and live on opposite ends of the Underground in order to greet and catch everyone that falls or flees there. His home, in the newly named Haunted Ruins, has been renovated into an orphanage for all the children left parentless because of the PoS. Torel often keeps secret of all the dead bodies that fall down that he cremates. That is, until Gaster finds out and confronts Torel and takes him to be confronted by Asgore about the matter. One such orphan child, named Chara falls down and is adopted by the Dreemurrs per Asriel's plead.
Chara was supposed to be the hope of the Underground. As a Determination soul mage, all they needed were 6 more soul mages before they could be free. However, there was an incident regarding both Chara and Asriel down in Gaster's lab. Asriel was trick by the PoS with a package addressed to her and a mask that cursed her into being a flower with no soul. And Chara, trying to save their sister, died to a secret PoS follower attack. The two were devastated by the attack. Torel reclused more in the Haunted Ruins, focusing on taking care of the children in his orphanage. Asgore focused on leading the Underground citizens, instating guards to protect the citizens again PoS attacks, and bringing a little joy into a seemingly hopeless situation. For the first time since the beginning, the two who were once inseparable, became separated. Even without the two trying to escape their sorrows, they could still only meet up for special occasions due to their vast responsibilities.
People stopped coming into the Underground, stopped falling down into the Underground. But one day, two children fell into the Underground. Their names are Sanse and Papina. Torel had a hunch that Gaster would be perfect for them. After a bit of convincing, Gaster caved and adopted the two. That should be all said and done. However, when Gaster gets erased from existence, Sanse and Papina fall under the care of Asgore, and occasionally Torel, giving them a semblance of a life they once had.
A year later, Asgore would give birth to Demetry, a determination soul mage. Suddenly Asgore is keeping secrets, as Asgore tries desperately to keep Demetry and them being a soul mage a secret, in fear of what may happen if a secret PoS worshiper were to find out. But there wasn't just one soul mage Asgore tried to keep secret, but two. River Person showed up at Asgore's doorsteps with a child, a patience soul mage named Patricia. She is Sanse and Papina's sibling, though RP wouldn't say how, only that they alone should know. Years later, before Sanse moves out with their siblings, Asgore gives Sanse the job of an undercover sentry and their real job of judge. She has seen what Sanse is capable of, what they can see that others can't. She trusts Sanse to be able to determine who can see Asgore and Demetry and who is a threat needing to be taken out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And, for now, that is where their story stands. There will be more info about them and what they do throughout the Underground. But that will be revealed in other characters' stories.

Next up will be their dear friend Gaster.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wingate Dingo Gaster has always wished to be normal. Her mother died giving birth to her, making her the only female in a now family of four; she was the only monster-human in the family, and she was the smartest. One brother was a brainless jock. Another brother frequently hung around gangs. Her father was neglectful to her and her two elder brothers. And while the boys fought for their father's attention and love, Gaster never did. She stuck to her studies and scientific curiosities. Her brothers would pick on her for her fascinations and make all sorts of misogynistic remarks. She had to learn how to do things for herself, like cooking, going to school on her own, steal her dad's credit card to buy cloths and school supplies, etc. She also developed a cleaning habit due to the extremely messy house.
At the age of 8 she became fascinated with souls, how they shape a person, the intricacies, and how they differentiate between humans, monsters, monster-humans, and soul mages. She made predictions on her family's souls and jot it all down in her journals. Her brothers would trash her things, ruining her hard observed research. That didn't deter her, for she learned to always have a backup in case of instances like these. However, it was always upsetting to watch hard work be so easily destroyed, and then having to rewrite everything in a new backup from the backup.
At the age of 9, the dad was arrested for illegal drug usage, neglect, and child abuse. The children were all submitted into the foster system. At the age of 10, Gaster was adopted by a family that lived in a small community village. They noted how special she was and doted her with praise. But she never wanted such praise. She only wished to be normal. That only became harder when she moved away from her home, and into the community village. While she wasn't picked on or bullied, it was hard for her to make new friends, as she couldn't connect with any of the kids due to the walls she put up to prevent potential future bullying and lower levels of empathy. She became self-conscious of every minute thing that was pointed out about her. Her genius-ness, her skeleton monster form, her maturity at a young age, etc., all things pointed out as unique that Wingate hated about herself because it meant that she was not normal. But that would change with a set of new friends.
The family she lived with now sat beside two other houses, with very rambunctious children. One day, on a summer morning, while Wingate was reading a book in the front yard, she noticed it got very quite. She had gotten used the the loud children, that she was able to block out their noise and read. Now that they had gone silent, Gaster found she couldn't focus. When she looked up, Wingate was startled to see two goat heads poking up from the top of the fence. The two introduced themselves as Torel and Asgore. Gaster tried to shoo them away, but they decidedly sat in Gaster's front lawn a couple feet away from Gaster herself. Gaster tried to ignore them, thinking they would go away, but Torel asked if Gaster could read to them from her book. Gaster said they wouldn't understand half of the words in it, but Torel challenged that notion. Gaster became curious at the challenge laid out, and accepted it. While neither could fully understand what Gaster was reading, Torel would pipe up from time to time to ask questions. Gaster would answer swiftly and kept reading. Asgore then had an idea. They should all study their souls. They each took turns as Gaster Pointed little nuances in their souls. After some time, Gaster proposed an activity: stargazing. They laid there for hours, watching the stars, until their parents called to each of them for bed. The three agreed to meet up again the next day. For Gaster, it was why. Why go out of their way to try and befriend her? She knew what they were doing when Torel challenged her, but she let them because she was curios how long they would keep up the "act". She didn't expect them to actually enjoy her company, and expected them to stop trying when her interests popped up. That was when they revealed that she was just like them- different, unique. Torel explained about his hunches, and Asgore explained her ability to tell someone's emotional state or their true desires, not to mention her rare three soul trait. With that Gaster found her friends, two little wierdos who were just as unique as her. From that moment forward, they became the three amigos. They always made time for each other and keep each other in a healthy-ish lifestyle.
When Gaster was 12, 7 mages made their home in the community village. Gaster didn't care too much about the group as a whole. What Gaster did find intriguing, is the fact that it's a group of 7 soul mages, each with a different soul type. Gaster became curious, as always, and observed the group, and that was when she started noticing things. They had a mob mentality and hierarchy. Sol, the determination soul mage, was the leader; anything he said goes and the others either agreed or held their true opinions to themselves. Derrin, the justice soul mage, was Sol's right hand and enforcer; he tends to dictate who joins their inner circles. Following up in their hierarchy is Tamila, bravery, their keen eye and muscle, and Alex, patience, their brains. At the bottom of their hierarchy are Chloe (Kindness), Pier (Integrity), and Mags (Perseverance); the three that don't seem to gel with the rest and maybe follow along due to peer pressure, or something else entirely. Gaster also noticed that Sol has a bit of a disdain for monsters and monster-humans. He was charismatic enough to not outwardly direct that disdain towards them, especially if they approached him first, but certain things he said, and the way he acted afterwards made his disdain clear.
Over the years, Gaster noticed more odd behaviors from them. For one, each soul mage took up one very important leadership position in the community. Sol became mayor, Derrin became head judge, Tamila became head of the sheriffs department and local security manager, Chloe became head chairwoman of the Ebott Meadow school system, Pier became the main founder for the fine arts department and entertainment and distributor of information, Mags became chief engineer and real estate manager, and Alex became the deputy mayor. And that's not mentioning how they all funded a church for their religious organization, the Purity of Soul. Gaster didn't care for religion, but from how Asgore and Torel described it, it could prove dangerous if not dealt with. But what could they do when the 7 soul mages now are the most powerful people in their community village, and the powerful people in Ebott city being too "busy" to do anything about it.
When Gaster turned 16, she finished high school, and went on to attend college in Ebott City, which was only a hour long bus ride. It was also at this time that her parent were planning on moving elsewhere, due to the rise in popularity of the PoS, a group that hates monsters and monster-humans alike. Gaster, despite knowing the danger she could put herself in by staying, she also didn't want to leave her two closest friends behind to deal with this themselves. Luckily, Asgore had just bought a house, and Torel also moved in to help pay rent. Gaster begged her parents if she could move in with her best friends. After some discussion, and numerus talks with the chaotic duo, Gaster's parents signed a custody form for Gaster to live with Asgore and Torel, and they are her legal responsibility until Gaster turns 18. Her two best friends got her into Rune University, one of the most prestigious schools in the country, for her to get her doctorate for Soul Science. She would also work as an intern at the Soul Research Science Division in Ebott city, coming home at extremely late nights and falling asleep on the couch.
It was on a night exactly like that when the monster massacred occurred. Gaster didn't hear the alarmed shouts of other people outside, or the shouting of her friends and house mates, until she was violently yanked off the couch and dragged outside by Asgore. It was then she saw the situation at hand, burned down buildings, bodies and dust in the streets, people actively being killed. As Asgore and Torel went on the defensive by guiding survivors to safety, Gaster went on the offensive. Gaster created diversions and slaughtered any offender she could see out of sight of those she cared for most. A couple times she tried to kill one of the soul mages, but they were too well coordinated; Gaster couldn't land any significant blow to any of them. But they got a blow off her. Derrin managed to scar her right eye before Gaster had to retreat to the caves under Mt. Ebott.
While Asgore and Torel were labeled the unofficial leaders of the Underground, Gaster became the scientific advisor. While she did work heavily with the soul research department, she also made sure the other divisions ran smoothly, everything stays organized, and answer any questions along the way. She started a new journal, which she named Journal of Scientific Inquiries, where she would document life in the Underground, research, and code illegal experimentations, namely done to herself.
During an incident with Chara, Asriel, and a cursed mask, Gaster tried to make an artificial soul to save Asriel from their flowery state using the small piece of Chara's soul temporarily. However, two humans that had fallen down and been accepted in the Underground, who was actually a PoS worshippers, destroyed the rest of Chara's soul, destroyed the prototype artificial monster souls, and set fire to the lab, which contained the formal notes on the soul research, before dying by Gaster herself. And while Asgore and Torel would be more concerned for her safety and generally distraught over the loss of both children, Gaster would think that they were disappointed in her for failing to keep the two children safe.
Gaster would burry herself in her work. She went back to the ruins of the lab and got the souls of the two PoS members for research. She built a secret lab in the back of her house to store the souls and to test on them. She would start to detach from sentiment, becoming completely logically minded with barely any care for how she started treating other people. That is until she hurts Flowey as she demanded for answers. She self evaluated and realized how toxic her mindset was becoming and worked to changing it. However, that doesn't mean she would completely abandon that sentiment, as she would use it from time to time when experimenting. A rule she would always adhere to, never experiment on children, would be disregarded more and more often, especially when said children offered themself for the experiment in the first place. It started with Flowey when she offered to test reset abilities, and it would continue with two other children that Gaster comes into possession of.
Much later on in life, she would be coaxed to adopt Sanse and Papina, who had recently fallen into the Underground. While Papina would be easy to deal with, Sanse would be nothing but a source of contempt for her. They do work things out with each other eventually. One day, Sanse would offer themself for experimentation due to their unique soul type. And while Gaster tried to refuse, all it took was blackmailing to reveal Gaster's black soul -that she tried so hard to hide- to her best friends, Asgore and Torel, Gaster agreed. The experiment worked-ish, with a lot of errors, some resetting, the accidental discovery of DT poisoning, and Gaster infusing their soul into Sanse for stabilization, the experiment Sanse proposed was a success. Gaster hoped that would be the end of experimenting on her children, but Papina would change that. Papina would demand Gaster implant some determination into her, after reading the latest entry in Gaster's journal and seeing what has happened with Sanse and not wanting her sibling to suffer reset remembrance alone. Gaster would again refuse, but Papina would gradually wear Gaster down, tiring her out until Gaster agrees. Gaster would be much more precautious with Papina in experimenting. She would also use some of her soul as well to see if just a little of everything would have an effect, as a secret experiment.
Other than experimenting on children, her children, Gaster managed to heal and live happily with Sanse and Papina as a whole family. That happiness would soon abruptly come to an end, as another PoS memeber attack Gaster at work, sending both of them into the core and erased from existance and forgotten by everyone. Everyone, except the two children Gaster instilled a piece of her soul into.
From that point forward, Gaster would be stuck in the void. She would meet other Gasters, most of whom she doesn't talk to. The ones she does talk to, she tries to glean information from them in regards to their universe. When she isn't doing any of that, she watches Sanse and Papina grow up into capable young adults. And watches, helplessly, when Frisk falls down into the Underground and changes everyone's lives there.
And that is where Gaster's story ends for now.
Up next will be both Chara and Asriel.
-(as GoH) "Every time you die, they will forget you little by little. I will erase your horrid existence from their memories!"
-(as Asriel) "I can see now that you aren't Frisk. I do apologize. I hope, mysterious soul, you can forgive me. And Frisk, if you are listening from within, and IF you gain access to the reset button again, which I highly doubt, please don't undo this happy ending."
Chara was born a year before Asriel. Chara grew up in the small village community, and within the PoS religious group their father, Kristopher, actively took part in. Kristopher was one of the few non-soul mages let into the council's inner circle; he became their secret informant, lawyer, and archivist. Chara resented the PoS and all it stood for because at the age of 4, they had a front row view of an execution and was horrified and appalled at the attrocities. Using their status as a soul mage, they committed acts of rebellion. In their adolecant years it was speaking out in class against the falsehoods they are told about monsters and monster-humans. Then they moved on to infromational posters. And later on still they moved to graphiti. They were all things only Chara would get in trouble with. Anyone that joined had to promise that they would leave the rebellion sites, and if questioned, blame everything on Chara.
Chara would also warn incoming families of the atrocities committed by the PoS. The families wouldn't believe them. So demon showed them all show video proof of past executions, articles, etc. that are kept in the village's library archives. Most well meaning people that came in quickly moved out. Some families, couldn't move away due to specific reasons. One such family was the Cortez family. They were tight money wise; both parents have to work, both parents have jobs in the inner city, but housing was much cheaper here in the village. Chara got to know the parents and their child, Sanse. Chara volunteered to watch over Sanse while the parents worked. The parents agreed. Chara watched over Sanse while the parents' went to work, as well as teach Sanse to be wary of the PoS, to treat monsters and monster-humans with kindness, and make up a coded language for fun.
Chara made sure that there would be no more executions, and demon succeeded. At least until it came to their own.
When Chara was 14, demon was caught harboring a monster up in their family's attic. Chara had gone to get groceries, and the elderly tortoise monster went down stairs to get some water. Chara's father and mother came home from work to find the monster mister. They called the soul mage council and waited for Chara to come home, and then held an immediate execution. Chara was held at the front by two of the cult's members, while the elderly tortoise monster was dragged up the steep slope of the mountain. The ceremonial knife was taken by Derrin, the Justice soul mage of the soul mage council, and he swiftly sliced through the monster's soul. Chara, in a fit of rage, broke free of the two people's grip and rushed the soul mage. They grappled the knife out of his hands. Demon would have done more damage, but knew deep dwon that they would soon be overpowered and dragged away. Demon kew one soul mage's death would mean nothing, but the loss of the nex generation of a soul mage would, at least, piss off Sol. So instead, Chara chewed out the PoS, Sol, the other soul mages, and bid a crypted message to Sanse, that only the two know about, and jumped down the hole.
It had been 10 years since anyone has fallen into the Underground. Asriel was finally allowed to go to the end of the Ruins by herself. All Asriel wanted to do was create a small garden in the entrance area. Instead she finds Chara lying down on the grounds, in pain. Asriel rushed over and helped Chara to Torel's second home in the Ruins, applied some basic first aid and healing, and called Torel and Asgore for help, as Torel had moved the orphanage to the Capitol. Torel showed up to assess if there are any greater injuries to be healed, and if Chara's soul was damaged. Luckily there wasn't, just some bruising and a slightly twisted ankle. He gets Chara to the Capitol, and Chara tells him what happened.
Chara stayed at the orphanage for a couple months. Asriel frequently visits. The two became the closest things to siblings, so Torel and Asgore decided to adopt Chara into their family. Chara and Asriel would explore the Underground together, finding as many secret hiding spots as possible. Chara even helped Asriel make that garden in the Ruins. Chara also hand knitted various clothing items for their new family, and the children in the orphanage. Chara would go to tell Asgore the banning of Halloween in the village, and tell Gaster about the executions, sharing their similar disdain for the PoS.
A couple years later, when Chara was 16 and Asriel 15, they were playing in the entrance of the Haunted Ruins. Chara had assured Torel that they should be the last to fall down, as they made sure people that could be targeted never settled in the village, so they were hesitantly allowed to play at the entrance. A package fell down the hole between the two. It looked very similar to the packaging for monster-human children's masks. It was addressed to Asriel herself. While Asriel was excited about this mysterious present, Chara was cautious. There was a mixture of confusion and excitement to find a flower monster mask inside. Asriel thought that maybe it was a sign of peace from the PoS. But when she put the mask on to goof around, that good will evaporated.
At first the mask wouldn't come off, like it had been fused to Asriel's face. Then Asriel became engulfed in a blinding light. When the light dimmed, in Asriel's place was a yellow buttercup flower monster. Then Asriel's soul hovered in front of her new form and started cracking. Both Asriel and Chara tried to hold Asriel's soul together, but nothing seemed to work. Right as Asriel's soul was about to shatter, Chara tore a piece of their own soul off and shoved it into Asriel's flowery form, replacing the monster soul with a bit of determination. Chara then took Asriel in an empty flower pot and ran as fast as they could to Gaster for an emergency soul replacement.
While Gaster worked on Asriel's soul, Chara laid on the other examination table to do a wellness check on their soul. Two human scientists strapped them in and then started attacking the other scientists. Chara screamed to get Gaster's attention, knowing Gaster's tendency to hyperfocus unless it was made abundantly clear that danger was present. Gaster got the surviving scientist out while simultaneously distracting the two undercover PoS spies and shielding herself and Asriel. Chara took their distraction to undo their bindings. Gaster wound up collapsing, but not before successfully landing a bone attack on the normal human; their soul, what will be come to known as an empty soul, shattered. Once Gaster collapsed, and the justice soul mage went to fire a soul bullet, Chara got between them, taking the damage instead. Chara took a sharp piece of metal and stabbed the soul mage through the heart. They then dragged Gaster and Asriel to the secret entrance Gaster showed them. Demon didn't get far before they too collapsed and their soul also shattered. The justice soul mage, before they succumbed to their wounds, destroyed everything in the lab: all of Gaster's formal notes, the prototype artificial souls, machinery, everything. Asriel feebly slid a metal sheet over the secret passage, hoping to create a barrier between the three people.
A recue team found everyone and took Asriel, Chara, and Gaster to the hospital. Asriel, Torel, and Asgore mourn Chara's death. Asriel requests that Chara be buried in their special garden at the entrance of the Haunted Ruin.
Asriel would learn about their new abilities as a flower. She would also find that she doesn't feel emotions as strongly as she used to. It all mostly feels numb. In a desperate attempt to feel something strong, she tries falling into the core. The fear of dying and her resolve to stay alive gave her the ability to reset. Also, because of her strong determination, as well as the fact that her empty soul is a fraction of Chara's soul, Chara's spirit awakens and attaches to Asriel.
Torel would permanently move out to the Haunted Ruins, and take the orphanage with him as well. He can no longer take the risk of anything happening. He habitually makes sure to walks to the entrance every morning to check for survivors and to pay respects to Chara. It would seem that Chara's grave has been magically spellbound to cause less injuries to those that fall down.
Asriel, now requesting to be called under the pseudonym Flowey, would become friend with Papina, while Chara reunites with Sanse (once Sanse is able to see them). And both Flowey and Chara would meet their new sibling Demetry, whom they look after and keep safe.
Due to Flowey's empty soul, she has become bitter and angry. She still feels compassion and other emotions, but she doesn't feel them as strongly as the more negative emotions. Turns out this this the fate of all empty souled beings; they become embittered and angry, feeling hopeless, helpless, and wanting to lash out at everything and everyone. Despite her parents knowing who she is, she doesn't spend much time around them, not wanting to accidentally hurt them. Flowey becomes more apathetic to how she treats people, often putting on a friendly guise to get what she wants. She has tried that with Papina, but Sanse and Chara would put a stop to it before she could even try anything.
Chara, as a phantom, can't freely roam around, and is stuck to those that have a piece of them and demon's determination, or are related to them as will be the case of Frisk.
Their story ends there for now.
Before Papina was born, Lucia-Estrella, and Luan moved with their two year old child, Sanse, to a small community just outside Ebott city. The housing was much more affordable, and the community looked very friendly. In fact, there was a party held to celebrate the newcomers, and everyone pitched in to help the family move in. However, this small village community is not what is seems. The day after, the family was visited by Chara Evans. Chara shut the blinds, unplugs the television, and checked every nook and cranny for any hidden cameras before warning Lucia and Luan of the danger they are in by staying in this community: the Purity of Soul, the executions, the absolute hatred of monsters and monster-humans and those that show support for them, and lastly, the biases they have favoring soul mages so most rules don't apply to them. The family, due to being tight financially, don't have the option to move again; they got lucky with how cheap housing was here, even if they have to shuttle bus into the city. Both parents have to work, both jobs are in the city, and they are both out for most of the day. Chara volunteered to babysit Sanse while they find their footing and rack up enough money to leave; they even said they would help with financial things using their allowance.
When Sanse was 4 and their mother had just given birth to their baby sister, Papina, the Cortez family sat at home as they watched the live broadcast execution of Chara. Chara warned them about hidden cameras that would be watching them to make sure they watched, so the family had no choice. Sanse watched helplessly as their best friend and elder sibling figure disappeared into the depths of Mount Ebott. What Sanse just witness made them hope that they would turn out to be normal when they turn five, that they wouldn't accidentally put a target on their family's backs. Come their fifth birthday, Sanse's worst fear came true. On their doorstep was a plain brown package addressed to Sanse, and inside the package was a pristine white skeleton mask.
Sanse's parents did everything they could to learn about monster-human children, their powers, etc. in secret. They even had tests done at the Ebott City Soul Scientific Research Center to gain a better understanding of Sanse and the powers they posses. Sanse also met up with some of Chara's closest friends from the city, and they helped Sanse practice their powers in secret. All the while, the family kept Sanse's 'gift' a secret, even from Papina, as the young child proved from a very early age to be too curious and too talkative for their own good. For Sanse, that would be a bit tricky, as after school, they would have to pick Papina up from daycare and go straight home, only to then try sneaking off to train or to then be picked up by their mother and taken for testing.
They kept this up for four years, until Papina's fifth birthday. Another package, another skeleton mask. Papina always wanted to know what her family was hiding, but in that moment, with all the answers being flooded into her brain, she regretted ever wanting to know. The next few day, Papina was also taken to the same research center for testing. Sanse also gave Papina the rundown on the routine: while at the village and anywhere the PoS could be, they are to hide their masks. But they also can't leave their mask at home, because it will appear by their side when they leave it a certain distance away from themselves. So they are to use backpacks or tote bags wherever they go so they can hide their masks. When Papina told Sanse that they were scared and that they wish that they were brave like them, Sanse taught Papina that bravery is being able to acknowledge that you're scared, but still face what scares you so.
One day, during school, Papina witnessed a person being bullied by two older kids. Paps had also been bullied by these same people before, but they mysteriously left her alone one day (thanks to Sanse's secret private 'talk' with them). She didn't want to face their wrath, but she also couldn't stand by as someone else faces it instead. Pap's recalled what Sanse told her, and steeled herself. She took out her mask and put it on, and, using some abilities she learned from the research center, she stopped the bullies. However, the child she saved was a child from the village.
The Cortez family tried to run. But they were soon caught and taken to the top of Mount Ebott. For knowingly hiding the truth twice, and both children having full knowledge and hiding it as well, they were all publicly sentenced to death. They forced the children to wear their masks and tried to feed them the poison broth Chara warned the parents about all those years ago, but Sanse got on the defensive. And so did their mother.
Lucia being a patience soul mage froze almost all the PoS in place, except the Integrity soul mage council elder's soul in the crowd. They went to attack Sanse and Papina, but Luan took the damage. He fought with the elder while Lucia took Sanse and Papina in her embrace, told them that she and Luan loved them, and then pushed them into the hole. Sanse, held Paps close to their chest as they fell so only Sanse Saw their mother being stabbed in the back. Only Sanse saw their mother's beheading. And when they fell to the bottom, only Sanse saw their lifeless bodies drop down with them.
Torel found them as he heard Sanse's screams for help. He quickly led the children away and cremated the bodies, giving the urns and Lucia's soul to them. The two children would spend a year in Torel's orphanage before being reluctantly adopted by W.D. Gaster. Papina was happy to have a parent again and was eager to get to know their new mother. Sanse, however, could tell that Gaster had ulterior motives, and made sure to make her life hell. After some encouragement from Papina, and Sanse finally getting their answer (which yes, Gaster had ulterior motives to study Sanse and Papina, as it should be impossible for Soul Mages to give birth; Soul Mages are commonly sterile), and some bonding time, Sanse warms up to Gaster. Gaster teaches Sanse and Papina, and even takes Sanse to her work. They also occasionally are babysat by either Torel or Asgore.
One day, during one of Sanse's more private studies, Sanse proposes an experiment to not only give them a black soul, but also fuse both the human and monster souls together. Gaster initially refused vehemently, but Sanse blackmails her with telling Asgore and Torel about her black soul and all the lies she has told them and noted in her personal journal. Gaster gave in and experimented with Sanse. There were several hiccups, and several resets, and Sanse nearly dying several times over due to unknown DT overdosing, but Gaster used parts of her own soul to equalize the attributes.
With Sanse's black soul, they gained little extra abilities from each attribute: Faster attacks and consistent damage per second with Bravery, a skull familiar that holds their blast bullets and acts as a shield from time to time with Perserverence and Kindness, also general telekinesis with Perserverence, and gravity manipulation on the soul with Integrety. And because of Sanse's fused soul, their human body and skeleton body find a happy medium between the two. Sanse no longer needs to use their mask to transform between the two forms. However, the drastic changes happening to Sanse's body got Papina concerned. She did her own investigating. The thing that concerned her the most is that Sanse can fully remember resets, and so Paps goes to Gaster with the demand to giver her the determination trait so that she may also remember resets so Sanse wouldn't be alone. Gaster again tried to refuse, and she believed she would succeed this time, but Papina just sang at the top of her lungs, trapped Gaster's room, and made it where Gaster could barely sleep or go about most of their day without hearing the obnoxious singing. Gaster soon agreed out of desperation. Gaster did take this chance to see what would happen if a piece of her soul was added to another without all the other attributes also being used. So Gaster injected a DT mixed with a fragment of her soul.
When Sanse was 13 and Papina was 9, Gaster fell into the core and was erased from everyone's memories, except theirs. They didn't know this at first, so it comes as a surprise when no one they talk to remember the late scientist. Gaster was well known, so it would be impossible for people to not know her. Not knowing what else to do, they turn to Torel, who, like everyone else, doesn't remember Gaster. He believes that he and Asgore had adopted them. Sanse and Papina don't reject any of this and just try to move on. They spend several years trying to move on from Gaster's "death". Sanse takes to learning all that they can about what happened to their adoptive mother, and Papina opts to being even more of a beacon of positivity, especially for Sanse. They each try to keep something of Gaster's as they move in with Asgore. Gaster didn't have very many things of hers except books. Papina goes out to the Echo pumpkins and picks out Gaster's pumpkin; it lead her to a secret compartment book where she puts a small picture frame of Gaster, her, and Sanse at the pumpkin patch in it. Sanse takes Gaster's Journal of Scientific Inquiries.
One day, Sanse tries what they had set out to do by turning their soul the way it is: Break the Barrier. Sanse tried and tried, but the power needed was much more than what their soul could take. Asgore had to drag Sanse away before they could do permanent damage to their soul.
A year later, the River Person summons the two. R.P. had created a new soul mage child, named Patricia, using their mother's soul. River Person told the two that the very nature of this child shouldn't be told freely. Sanse and Papina both decided to keep this a secret. On the subject of keeping things a secret, Asgore had them keep Patricia's Soul Mage status a secret from everyone. She's afraid of another PoS member taking away another child's life just to keep people underground. They too promised. For Sanse, they would carry these promises and secrets to the grave, the only one that would here about it would be Chara. For Papy, she's not so good with secrets; that's why her best friend Flowey can hold them for her!
Over the next 7 years, Sanse takes odd jobs here and there to accrue enough money to pay for Gaster's old house in Halloween towne. Sanse also took up Gaster's position on overseeing all the different scientific departments. On the tale end of the last year before moving out, Asgore offers Sanse a more permanent job. She offers Sanse a job as an undercover sentry, and secret judge. She knows Sanse's soul works different than most, though she doesn't know how. She knows Sanse can see people true essence, and no secret can be kept from them. And with Asgore growing more paranoid by the day about secret PoS followers being underground, having Sanse as the judge would give her piece of mind for everyone's safety. Sanse took the job without hesitation.
With a more permanent and stable form of income, Sanse sticks with sentry duty, scientist, and occasional judge if anyone wants to see Asgore. And while Sanse thinks Papina doesn't know much about it, Flowey makes sure to keep Papy updated. Papyrus in return keeps everything tidy, takes care of Patricia, learns to cook, and in general tries to keep a positive atmosphere for her family.
When Alphys takes over as the new head scientist, Sanse takes up selling candy apples as a cover up for their three sentry stations.
With the rise of Mettaton, Papina became really into cosplay. Mettaton became her idol, and perhaps Papy formed the tiniest crush on the star.
One day, there was a massive raid from the PoS members. Several empty souled humans purposely fell down into the Underground with the purpose of eradicating everyone. They were stopped quickly though before they had a chance to properly storm the Fallin paths into Halloween towne, thanks to the royal guard and secretly Sanse. However, many were severely wounded in the process, and several were 'Falling Down'. It would be only a matter of time before Sanse finds out about Alphys' failed experiment that caused the Amalgamations.
On Papina's end, she saw how brave an selfless the guards acted. No civilians were hurt, only the guards. They were so cool! Papy made herself a cosplay of her own guard outfit. And after a party where someone told Paps that she should try out for it, she took that idea and ran with it! She took the potential to become a guardsman very seriously. She used actual armor for her outfit, while still keeping it fashionable. Papina goes to Undyne's house to volunteer to join the Underground guard. Undyne turns her down. He knows who Papina is. He knows how strong she is from watching her in Waterfall during his patrols. However, he also has close ties with Sanse through their respective jobs, and Sanse would end him if he let Papina join. However, after a full night of Papina guarding Undyne's house and still having the energy to excitedly greet him as if she too had a full night's rest, Undyne decided to "train" Papy.
For the most part, they attained normalcy. Hopefully, everything will remain peaceful. But that simply isn't the case, not when Frisk enters the Underground.
