I adore both versions with all my heart; Rogues because of emotional impact, AA because he's clearly having All the Fun. I've been following Codot!verse from when everything was on separate accounts, so they get me on nostalgia. Audio Adventures is the new kid on the block, giving Jonathan interesting plotlines that grip me to my seat for more. Both of them come with amazing vocal performances from people who are passionate about what they are working with. Heck, just the mere fact that both finalists in this contest come from audio-based productions speaks volumes about the quality of their respective crews.

Honestly, the only way I was able to choose had nothing to do with the character himself; it's where his universe has him.

Without getting into spoiler territory, Audio Adventures Season 2 ends...weirdly. I understand we need cliffhanger(s) to lead-up to Season 3 (at least, I'm praying there's a Season 3 because this series is wonderful & fantastic & I want to see where it goes next <3), but it comes off as "unfinished" rather than "paused for dramatic effect". This is especially apparent when you compare it to how Season 1 wrapped up; the ending here is much more abrupt/sudden.

In contrast, Codot!verse tends to finish that season's story arc while also laying to groundwork for what's next. Granted, we have a year's worth of audiofiles versus ten episodes from a streaming service to work with, but the point still stands. Actions have consequences, and those consequences sometimes come with payoffs that only appear at a time where you forgot they were there at all. Storylines have evolve to become more intricate while still remaining fun and easy to follow. This goes without mentioning that long-time listeners have become Pavlovian with anxiety to the start of "Spooky Season" because we've come to associate that time of the year to "this is the part of the story where these guys could actually die! D8" >:D )

In conclusion, this has been an entertaining battle to witness and both competitors should feel proud of their work!

I saw a post wondering why people write whump and it got me to thinking why I originally was fascinated by any whumpy content as a child.

I think for me, it was an escapist way to validate my emotional pain. Growing up, I felt awful and anxious and terrified all the time, but because I wasn't being beaten or physically neglected or abused in a way that was obviously visible to others, it didn't feel real. It didn't feel like I was "allowed" to have those awful twisted-up feelings. And when I tried to talk about them to anyone, I was always dismissed -- there's nothing to be scared of, there's nothing to cry about, what's wrong with you?

Watching characters go through awful things and imagining myself going through those awful things was cathartic. If I were caught in a snowstorm and dying of hypothermia, or rushed into emergency surgery from a burst appendix, or abducted by aliens, or kidnapped and tortured -- then these awful feelings inside me would make sense. I'd be "allowed" to feel sad and scared.

There's also the intoxicating allure of helplessness. When you're parentified as a child, it feels like everything falls on your shoulders. You're ten years old and responsible for keeping your parents happy and their marriage together on top of perfect grades and perfect behavior. Wouldn't it be nice if you were put in a situation where you didn't have to do anything? Wouldn't it be nice in an awful way to be laid up in a hospital bed with some horrible disease or tied to a chair awaiting rescue or hypnotized into a trance?

Like the only way I could imagine resting my anxious brain was being kidnapped or mind controlled!

And then if the whump includes comfort, that's even better, because not only was it totally valid for you to feel awful, other people are actually trying to make you feel better! They bring you blankets and hot drinks and medicine instead of telling you you're being dramatic and to suck it up.

So for me, that's a lot of why whump can be so comforting.

Important announcement! Dragons are real, alive and well. Ok so hear me out, a dragon is just a winged creature with scales. (Fire breathing is not a requirement because there are elemental dragons among other types so not all dragons breathe fire.) Do you know what else is a winged creature with scales? Butterflies and moths. Therefore, according to our formula for dragons, both butterflies and moths are modern day dragons. You might be thinking to yourself, "I didn't know that butterflies and moths have scales." Well my dear friend they do, their wings are covered in scales which leads me to my next point:

Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue taught us this as kids and we just didn't realize. In the Great Fairy Rescue the fairies are painting the butterflies wings. One of the butterflies gets spooked and flies away before the wings are fully painted. Underneath the paint the butterfly is white. Guess what? If you touch a butterfly, you run the risk of rubbing off it's scales. When the scales come off, white wings are revealed. Honestly, this might be proof that faries are real too.
